Chapter 12 - The Father Who Was Still Watching

Daniel Ruiz carried the cane into a secure evidence chamber.

A bomb technician dismantled it remotely.

Inside the handle, investigators found a tracker, encrypted storage chips, and a tiny injector coated with the same sedative used on Emma.

Harold’s cane had never been a walking aid.

It was a weapon and a command device.

The storage chips contained fragments of communications sent after the hotel explosion.

Harold was alive.

He had reached a location called Haven Nine.

No map identified it.

Lucian Wren refused to cooperate.

From his guarded medical suite, he requested only one visitor.

Rebecca.

Agent Reed advised against it.

“He will try to manipulate you.”

“I need to know where Harold went.”

“He may give you false information.”

“Then I will listen for what he avoids.”

Wren sat behind reinforced glass, his wheelchair secured to the floor.

Without the underground ballroom and its obedient followers, he appeared smaller.

But not weaker.

“You have Anna’s eyes,” he told Rebecca.

“You have a prison number.”

He smiled.

“Temporary arrangements.”

“You tried to kill three children.”

“I tested a system.”

“You stole my daughter.”

“Harold stole your daughter. I merely allowed him to believe she would become useful.”

Rebecca leaned closer to the glass.

“Where is Haven Nine?”

Wren’s eyelids flickered.

“Haven is an idea.”

“Harold is going there.”

“Then Harold is more frightened than I thought.”

“Of what?”

“Of the child you have not found.”

Rebecca’s stomach tightened.

“I found Rose.”

Wren smiled.

“Did you?”

Rebecca forced herself not to react.

“The DNA matched.”

“DNA tells you ancestry, not history.”

“Speak clearly.”

“There were four infants at St. Agnes that night.”

Rebecca stared at him.

Wren continued.

“Lillian’s twins. Your daughter. And a fourth child brought by Anna.”

“Who was the fourth?”

“Ask your husband.”

Marcus was questioned immediately.

He denied knowing anything about another infant.

Then Agent Reed showed him a photograph recovered from Wren’s archive.

It showed Harold holding a newborn boy.

On the back was written:

M.V. retained as contingency heir.

Marcus’s initials were M.V.

He stared at the photograph.

“That cannot be me.”

His birth records had always listed another hospital, another date, and another attending physician.

DNA testing changed everything.

Marcus was not biologically related to Harold or Evelyn.

Neither was Josh.

Both had been placed within the Vale family as children.

Madison was the only biological child of Harold and Evelyn.

Marcus sat in silence after reading the results.

Rebecca held his hand.

“Does it change who you are?”

“No.”

“Then it does not change who Emma is either.”

He looked at her.

For the first time since the nightmare began, both understood that family had never been defined by the people who controlled the records.

Agent Reed traced Haven Nine through the communication chips.

It was a former military medical facility hidden inside a mountain two hundred miles north.

Federal teams prepared a raid.

Before they left, Rebecca made a choice.

Emma, Elise, and Rose would be moved to a protected home under new identities.

Madison asked to accompany Rose.

Rebecca refused.

“You knew children were being used,” Rebecca said.

“I did not know Rose was there.”

“You knew enough to demand immunity before helping us.”

Madison lowered her eyes.

“I was afraid.”

“So were the children.”

Madison had no answer.

Rebecca did not hate her.

But forgiveness would not replace accountability.

Madison agreed to testify against Evelyn, Harold, Wren, and the investors.

In return, prosecutors would consider reduced charges for her participation in financial crimes.

Evelyn remained defiant.

During her second interrogation, she insisted Emma had been “a failed placement” and blamed Rebecca for making the child emotionally unstable.

When shown photographs of the underground beds, Evelyn said, “Those children were given purpose.”

Detective Ortiz closed the folder.

“You may spend the rest of your life discovering yours.”

The federal raid on Haven Nine began before dawn.

The facility appeared abandoned.

Inside, agents found empty sleeping quarters, fresh tire tracks, and walls stripped of equipment.

Harold had escaped hours earlier.

In the central command room, Marcus discovered a live video feed.

It showed the protected home where the three girls had been moved.

Rebecca stood between their beds, reading a story.

The feed had no sound.

Then Harold stepped into view behind her.

Marcus shouted at the screen.

Rebecca saw the reflection in the window.

May you like

She turned.

Harold stood inside the room holding a pistol.
