THE OWNER’S INSTRUCTIONS / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - Lunch for Fifteen

By eleven-thirty, the house was louder than a crowded restaurant.

The teenagers had connected a gaming console to the television.

Two children were running between the living room and kitchen.

George had opened one of Daniel’s expensive bottles of whiskey.

Richard had moved the garden furniture without asking.

Vanessa continued filming, offering a social media tour of “my brother’s dream home.”

Patricia sat at the kitchen island reading through a handwritten recipe.

Emily remained in the armchair.

Her phone rested beside her.

She had taken her medication from the original pharmacy bottle and kept her water near her at all times.

Daniel had offered to prepare a dose for her twice.

She refused both times.

At noon, Patricia clapped her hands.

“Lunch.”

No one moved toward the kitchen.

Patricia looked at Emily.

Emily looked back.

“Is something wrong?” Patricia asked.

“No.”

“Then why are you sitting?”

“Because I am recovering.”

“We have already discussed this.”

“No. You made demands. I declined them.”

Daniel stood near the fireplace with his arms folded.

“Emily, stop making excuses. Go cook.”

The room went quiet.

The sentence was almost identical to the one she had predicted he would eventually say.

Yet hearing it still hurt.

Not because she planned to obey.

Because some final part of her had hoped he would choose differently.

Emily looked at him.

“You promised you would handle the food.”

“I’ve been carrying luggage and fixing rooms because you refused to prepare anything.”

“I was physically unable to prepare them.”

“You didn’t even try.”

The family watched with varying degrees of curiosity, amusement, and discomfort.

Elaine looked down at her hands.

She was the only person who appeared ashamed.

Patricia gave Daniel an approving nod.

Emily saw it.

So did Daniel.

He became bolder.

“My family drove for hours. The least you can do is make lunch.”

“The least you could do is respect medical instructions.”

“Here we go again.”

“I had surgery two days ago.”

Richard gave a low laugh.

“Everyone knows.”

Vanessa raised her phone.

“Maybe she needs evidence for later.”

Emily turned toward her.

“Are you recording me?”

Vanessa smiled.

“Only if you keep being entertaining.”

“Turn it off.”

“It’s my phone.”

“It’s my home.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“Stop saying that as if the rest of us don’t belong here.”

Emily’s pulse remained steady.

This was the moment.

Not because Daniel had ordered her to cook.

Not because Patricia had insulted her.

Not because twelve people had treated the house like a free resort.

The moment came because Daniel had chosen his audience.

He believed their presence made him untouchable.

Emily unlocked her phone.

Daniel laughed.

“Now what?”

She opened Arthur’s message thread.

The word WREN remained in the draft.

Vanessa moved closer with her camera.

“Who are you texting?”

Emily pressed Send.

The message changed from waiting to delivered.

She locked the screen.

“Someone who owns this house.”

For half a second, no one reacted.

Then Vanessa laughed.

Richard joined her.

Mark shook his head.

One of the teenagers whispered, “That was dramatic.”

Daniel smiled.

“You own the house?”

Emily answered calmly.

“I did not say that.”

Patricia’s laughter stopped first.

She looked at Daniel.

“What does she mean?”

Daniel’s smile remained, but uncertainty entered his eyes.

“She’s trying to scare everyone.”

Emily leaned back carefully.

“I asked all of you to respect my recovery.”

Patricia placed both hands on the island.

“You cannot remove your husband’s family from his home.”

Emily looked toward the luggage.

“We’ll see.”

Daniel walked to her chair.

“What did you do?”

“I sent a message.”

“To whom?”

“You’ll meet him.”

He lowered his voice.

“Cancel it.”

“No.”

“Emily.”

“No.”

Daniel reached toward her phone.

Emily pulled it against her chest.

Pain flashed through her injured side.

She gasped.

Elaine stood.

“Daniel, leave her alone.”

Every face turned toward Elaine.

Richard stared at his wife.

“What did you say?”

“She just had surgery. Don’t grab her.”

“I didn’t grab her,” Daniel said.

Emily looked at Elaine.

For the first time that day, she felt less alone.

Daniel stepped back.

Patricia’s voice became cold.

“Elaine, this is a private matter.”

“We’re all standing in the same room.”

“You are a guest.”

Elaine glanced at the suitcases.

“So is everyone else.”

Richard’s expression darkened.

“Come outside.”

“No.”

The word surprised him.

It also seemed to surprise Elaine.

The room shifted again.

Patricia had expected unity.

Emily’s refusal had created the first crack.

The doorbell rang.

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“That fast?”

She said nothing.

He walked toward the door and checked the camera screen.

A food delivery driver waited outside.

Daniel exhaled.

Richard laughed.

Vanessa resumed recording.

Daniel opened the door.

The delivery was small.

Four sandwiches and two salads.

Emily looked at the bags.

“You ordered lunch for yourself?”

Daniel frowned.

“I ordered before everyone arrived. I didn’t know the exact number.”

“You knew there would be twelve guests.”

“I forgot to update it.”

Patricia stared at him.

“You ordered food for yourself and expected Emily to cook for everyone else?”

Daniel’s face reddened.

“It wasn’t like that.”

For once, Patricia’s criticism landed on her son.

Emily almost smiled.

Then Patricia turned to her.

“You could have reminded him.”

The responsibility returned to Emily as naturally as water flowing downhill.

The doorbell rang again.

This time, no one laughed.

Daniel checked the screen.

A sharply dressed man stood outside holding an official folder.

Behind him, a movers’ truck turned into the driveway.

Emily recognized Arthur Hale immediately.

He had aged since she last saw him in person, but his posture remained straight and his dark suit perfectly fitted.

Daniel looked back at Emily.

“What did you do?”

Emily placed both hands on the arms of the chair.

“I protected myself.”

Daniel opened the door.

Arthur entered, followed by several movers.

Rain began to fall beyond the glass.

He looked around the crowded living room, the scattered luggage, the clothing, the muddy rug, and Emily’s bandaged leg.

His expression became harder with every detail.

“Mrs. Emily Carter?”

Emily met his eyes.

“I’ve been expecting you.”

Daniel tried to speak.

Arthur held up one hand.

Then he opened the official folder.

May you like

“Per the owner’s instructions, all unauthorized guests must leave the property immediately.”

The laughter disappeared.
