Chapter 14 - THE SECOND CHILD

Evelyn asked to speak with Sophia alone.

They entered the founder archive, where soundproof walls protected conversations once intended for corporate secrets.

Now the room held only family betrayals.

Sophia stood across from her mother.

“Is there another child?”

Evelyn did not answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

“Boy or girl?”

“A boy.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

“How old?”

“Three.”

Four years earlier, Evelyn had staged her death.

Around the same time, the embryo had been transferred.

“You carried him?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

“A surrogate in Europe.”

“Who authorized it?”

“I did.”

Sophia’s eyes opened.

“You used my embryo.”

“To keep it from Daniel.”

“You could have destroyed it.”

“I believed preserving him was the right choice.”

“You created a child and hid him from me.”

“I intended to bring him to you when it was safe.”

“You said the same thing about your own disappearance.”

Evelyn’s voice hardened.

“There was no safe path.”

“There is never a safe path because all of you make decisions in secret and call them protection.”

“I was trying to save your children.”

“You were trying to control when I was permitted to become their mother.”

Evelyn looked away.

Sophia moved closer.

“Who has him?”

“A couple connected to Adrian Vale.”

Sophia felt the trap close.

The fake investigator had access to her son.

“Does Adrian know the child is mine?”

“Yes.”

“Does Jonathan?”

“Not until the registry split.”

“Now he does.”

“Yes.”

Sophia pressed both hands against the table.

Lily was on Jonathan’s offshore station.

Her three-year-old son was somewhere with Adrian Vale.

Two children separated by a program created before Sophia was old enough to understand it.

Miriam entered after Sophia called her.

Agent Dean joined them.

Evelyn provided every detail she had.

The surrogate’s name was Elena Markovic.

The child’s assigned name was Noah.

The last known location was outside Prague.

Dean contacted international authorities.

Within an hour, they confirmed Elena had disappeared nine months earlier.

Her home stood empty.

Neighbors remembered a man visiting often.

Gray suit.

Silver bird pin.

Adrian Vale.

Sophia watched surveillance footage from a train station.

Adrian walked beside a small boy wearing a green jacket.

The child’s face was partially turned.

Sophia paused the video.

Dark hair.

Serious eyes.

Ethan’s chin.

Her own mouth.

Noah.

The footage was dated three weeks earlier.

Adrian had been moving him before Dr. Vale’s death.

“He knew the conflict was coming,” Dean said.

“Or he started it,” Miriam replied.

Sophia thought of the anonymous photographs.

Adrian had exposed Ethan at the exact moment needed to trigger the protection clause and fracture the registry.

He had positioned himself as an investigator.

He had stolen Dr. Vale’s drive.

He had attacked the cemetery.

Every move pushed Sophia toward splitting the registry.

“What does Adrian’s fragment contain?” she asked.

Peter checked the transfer logs.

“He doesn’t have a fragment.”

“Then why manipulate us?”

“Because he knew Jonathan would receive one.”

Sophia understood.

Adrian did not need the registry.

He needed Jonathan to become visible.

Noah was his leverage.

Lily was Jonathan’s key.

Sophia was the bridge between them.

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

Dean traced it immediately.

Sophia answered.

Adrian Vale’s voice came through.

“I assume your mother finally told you.”

“Where is Noah?”

“Safe.”

“Put him on the phone.”

“He’s asleep.”

“If you hurt him—”

“I saved him.”

“You kidnapped him.”

“From a surrogate who planned to sell him.”

“Bring him to me.”

“Not yet.”

Sophia forced herself to remain calm.

“What do you want?”

“Your founder fragment.”

“You don’t need it.”

“I need to make sure Jonathan never rebuilds Nightingale.”

“Then help me rescue Lily.”

“That is the plan.”

“What plan?”

“Jonathan has invited you to the platform.”

Sophia looked at Dean.

“How do you know?”

“Because I gave him a reason.”

A child stirred faintly on Adrian’s end.

Sophia’s heart tightened.

“Let me hear Noah.”

Adrian was silent.

Then a small voice said, “Hello?”

Sophia could not speak.

The boy sounded sleepy.

Adrian spoke gently to him.

“Tell her your name.”

“Noah.”

Sophia gripped the phone.

“Hi, Noah.”

“Are you Sophia?”

“Yes.”

“Adrian says you’re my family.”

“I am.”

“Are you coming?”

Sophia closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Adrian took the phone back.

“Then listen carefully.”

Coordinates appeared in Sophia’s messages.

A private airfield.

Departure at dawn.

“You will come alone,” Adrian said.

“No agents. No trackers. Bring the founder fragment.”

“And Noah?”

“He flies with us.”

“To Jonathan?”

“Yes.”

“You are taking both children into the same danger.”

“I am ending Nightingale.”

“How?”

“By bringing every surviving key into one place.”

Sophia looked at Evelyn.

Her mother slowly shook her head.

Adrian continued.

“Jonathan has Lily. I have Noah. You have the fragment. Ethan has the final founder signature.”

Sophia’s gaze moved through the glass toward Ethan.

“You need Ethan too.”

“Yes.”

“And after the registry opens?”

“We destroy it.”

“That is not your only goal.”

Silence.

Sophia lowered her voice.

“You want your brother’s killer.”

Adrian’s answer came coldly.

“I want everyone who ordered his death.”

The call ended.

A new message appeared.

DAWN. FOUR PASSENGERS.

SOPHIA. ETHAN. NOAH. ADRIAN.

NO AUTHORITIES.

Beneath it was a photograph of Noah asleep on a small bed.

On the wall behind him, someone had written a single sentence.
