Chapter 5 - The Woman in the Hallway

Emma woke the following morning.

The room was white and quiet. A monitor beeped beside her. Her head felt heavy, and her body seemed distant.

Her first thought was Ethan.

She tried to sit up.

“My baby.”

A nurse entered immediately.

“He’s safe. He’s right outside with your mother-in-law.”

Emma began to cry.

Catherine appeared moments later carrying Ethan.

The baby was wrapped in a fresh hospital blanket. His face was calm, and one tiny fist rested beneath his chin.

Catherine placed him gently in Emma’s arms.

“He’s perfectly fine.”

Emma kissed Ethan’s forehead again and again.

“Ryan?”

Catherine did not answer.

Emma looked up.

“Did he come?”

“No.”

“Does he know?”

“Yes.”

The truth settled between them.

Emma turned toward the window.

“I called him before I passed out.”

Catherine sat beside the bed.

“You don’t have to tell me anything until you’re ready.”

“He was with Madison.”

Catherine closed her eyes.

Emma explained the phone call, the woman’s voice, and the celebration video.

“I kept thinking he would walk through the door,” Emma said. “Even after he refused, part of me believed he would change his mind.”

Catherine placed a hand over Emma’s.

“I raised him better than this.”

“This isn’t your fault.”

“He learned somewhere that love means people will keep forgiving him.”

Emma looked down at Ethan.

“I almost left my son alone.”

“No,” Catherine said firmly. “Ryan left both of you alone.”

Later that day, a social worker named Lena Morales visited Emma. She explained that the hospital could help create a safe discharge plan.

Emma initially resisted.

“Ryan has never hit me.”

“Abandonment during a medical emergency can still create danger,” Lena said. “Especially when an infant is involved.”

Emma remembered Ryan stepping over her to reach the door.

She remembered begging.

“What happens if I don’t go home?”

“You have choices.”

Catherine spoke from the corner.

“You can stay with me.”

Emma stared at her.

“Ryan has a key to your house.”

“Not anymore.”

Catherine placed a new key on the bedside table.

“I changed the locks this morning.”

For the first time since waking, Emma felt something other than fear.

She felt protected.
