Chapter 8 - Crown Authorization

For twelve years, General Marcus Rourke had been the closest thing Ava possessed to a second father.

He recommended her for command. He visited her hospital bed after a roadside bomb shattered her left leg. He remembered Daniel's birthday when others avoided speaking his name. He taught her that loyalty without scrutiny was merely obedience dressed in better language.

Now Ava held him at gunpoint in a hotel room containing proof that Daniel had survived.

"Explain Crown Authorization," she said.

Rourke kept his hands visible. "After a series of cyber breaches, Lantern developed emergency protocols to preserve command continuity. If an officer's credentials were compromised, we could create a temporary digital identity, isolate the original records, and maintain operations until the breach was contained. Crown Authorization allowed that replacement."

"A replacement identity."

"Digital, Ava. Never human."

"Mirror House used the same concept."

"Because someone stole our framework."

Cross lowered her weapon slightly but did not holster it. "Who had access?"

"The director, two oversight officials, and the system architect."

"Elias Venn," Ava said.

Rourke nodded. "He built the authentication layers."

The room suddenly felt arranged rather than discovered. Daniel's uniform. The video. The message accusing Rourke. Mara was not simply revealing secrets. She was controlling the order in which Ava encountered them, pushing her toward distrust.

Ava lowered her weapon but kept it in hand. "Show me the original casualty file."

They returned to Fort Halcyon under armed escort. Rourke opened a secure archive that required his palm, voice, and rotating command token. Daniel's casualty file contained satellite images of the ambush site, medical communications, and the final evacuation report.

Ava found the break in less than ten minutes.

The report listed Daniel's blood type as O negative.

Daniel was A positive.

Someone had inserted another casualty's medical data and attached Daniel's name.

Rourke stared at the page. "This file passed three reviews."

"By whom?"

Two reviewers were dead. The third was Senator Edwin Kroll, then a civilian member of an emergency defense commission.

Kroll had attended Harrison's gala and carried a silver service mask in his limousine.

Cross requested an arrest warrant, but Kroll's protective detail reported him missing. His home security system showed him entering at 4:11 a.m. and never leaving. Agents found a tunnel beneath his wine cellar connected to a storm drain.

The network liked second doors.

Ava returned to the Daniel video. Frame analysis revealed a reflection in a metal cabinet. A woman stood behind the camera wearing a medical coat. Her face was distorted by the curved surface, but her posture matched the woman from the charity-race photograph.

The same woman had supervised Mara as a child.

Facial reconstruction produced a probable match: Dr. Evelyn Saye, former neonatal specialist at St. Agnes Hospital. Officially, Saye died in the archive fire seven years after Ava's birth.

Unofficially, her Social Security number continued receiving deposits from Second Horizon for twenty-four years.

"Saye selected Mara," Ava said. "She may have supervised the substitution program."

Cross pulled travel records. "A woman using one of Saye's known aliases entered the country six days ago. Same day Elias vanished."

Rourke studied a map. "She may be Lantern Crown."

"Or she may serve whoever is."

A secure terminal flashed an alert.

Someone had attempted to activate Ava's military credentials at a missile-defense communications center in Nebraska. The biometric scan passed facial recognition, voice authentication, and fingerprint verification.

Mara had not merely copied Ava's appearance.

She had copied enough biological markers to enter a protected facility.

The center went into lockdown, but the intruder escaped after accessing an archive of dormant emergency channels. Nothing appeared stolen.

"She wanted us to know she could get in," Cross said.

Ava examined the access time. 11:42 a.m.

At exactly 11:42, Caleb received a message on his protected phone.

It contained a photograph of Celeste holding that day's newspaper. Beside her stood Elias Venn. Behind them was a wall painted pale blue.

The message said:

BRING HARRISON TO THE OLD RIVER TERMINAL AT MIDNIGHT.

COME ALONE OR YOUR MOTHER LOSES ANOTHER DAUGHTER.

Caleb had not told the agents immediately. He had tried to leave custody through a service stairwell before guards stopped him.

Ava confronted him in the interview room.

"Why would Mara contact you?"

Caleb stared at the table. "Because she says Dad chose me too."

"Chose you for what?"

"To replace you."

Ava frowned.

Caleb began to cry. "Not your identity. Your position in the family. Dad knew you would leave. He raised me to inherit everything because he expected you to become a threat. Mara says the company, the gala, even my marriage were built to keep me between you and the truth."

"Mara manipulates people with partial facts."

"She also sent this."

He slid a photograph across the table.

It showed Daniel Mercer stepping from a vehicle two months earlier.

He looked older, thinner, and unmistakably alive.

May you like

On the back, in Mara's handwriting, were six words.

HE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.
