Chapter 10 - The Garden of Witnesses

Saturday arrived beneath a flawless blue sky.

The Hart villa opened its gates at five in the afternoon. Business leaders, foundation donors, journalists, board members, and neighbors entered under the eyes of plainclothes officers. Hidden cameras streamed to police command vehicles outside the estate.

Amelia wore an ivory dress because the instructions demanded it. The fabric flowed over her stomach and brushed her ankles. Adrian wore a dark suit with no tie. Noah remained inside with Detective Cross and two officers, though the public believed he was at the party.

Vanessa’s chair stood empty near the pool.

At six, Adrian stepped onto the terrace.

“Thank you for coming,” he began. “Recent events have raised questions about Hart Biotech, the Hart Foundation, and my family. Tonight, I intend to answer them.”

Every guest lifted a phone.

Amelia stood beside him. The pool reflected the sky with deceptive calm.

Adrian announced that he would transfer temporary voting control of his company shares into an independent trust pending investigation. It was not the Mirror Trust, but only six people knew the difference.

Nothing happened.

At 6:17, the orchestra began playing.

At 6:24, the fountain stopped.

At 6:26, every guest received the same video on their phones.

Mia appeared against a black background.

“Look at Amelia Hart,” she said. “Ask why a woman with no verifiable childhood controls one of the world’s largest medical companies. Ask why her fingerprints changed after a car accident. Ask why her husband’s family kept another woman alive beneath this villa.”

Guests turned toward Amelia.

The pressure of their attention felt physical.

Mia continued. “Tonight, the Hart family will choose truth or inheritance.”

The screens changed to a live image of Noah tied to a chair.

Amelia’s heart stopped.

Cross’s voice came through her hidden earpiece. “Noah is beside me. That video is fabricated.”

Then a child screamed from inside the villa.

“Mommy!”

It was Noah’s voice.

Amelia moved instinctively. Adrian caught her arm.

“Cross says he is safe.”

Another scream came from the upstairs balcony.

A boy in Noah’s blue jacket appeared behind the railing. A masked figure held a knife at his throat.

Guests panicked.

Cross shouted through the earpiece that the real Noah was still secure in the library.

A replica, Amelia realized. Not a child, perhaps, but a projected image aligned with the balcony.

The distraction worked.

Vanessa stepped from the crowd wearing a red dress.

She had entered disguised as a server. Before officers could reach her, she pressed a blade against Amelia’s side.

“Smile,” Vanessa whispered. “Everyone is watching.”

Adrian saw the weapon. His expression did not change.

“What do you want?” Amelia asked.

“The same thing I have wanted since we were children. To stop being the sister who survived because the others were used.”

“You slept with my husband to heal your childhood?”

Pain flashed across Vanessa’s face. “I slept with him because for one night I wanted someone to choose me without knowing why.”

Adrian heard her.

“Vanessa,” he said, “I chose selfishness. Do not make it love.”

Her grip tightened.

The garden lights went out.

In darkness, Amelia felt a shove.

She fell forward, but not into the pool. Adrian caught her waist and pulled her back.

A shot rang out.

When emergency lights came on, Vanessa lay beside the water with blood spreading across her red dress.

Mia stood on the balcony holding a pistol.

“You were always the weakest reflection,” she called down.

Vanessa lifted her head. “No,” she gasped. “She is not Mia.”

Then the pool began to glow from beneath.

May you like

A large screen rose from the water, displaying Dr. Voss’s face.

“Good evening, Amelia,” he said. “Your final memory test is about to begin.”
