Chapter 7 - The Price of the Family Name

The investigation lasted four months.

During that time, the Blackwood name changed from a symbol of luxury into a warning about arrogance.

News programs replayed the restaurant footage. Former employees described unpaid overtime, intimidation, and pressure to hide financial problems. Investors demanded accountability.

Dominic gave one television interview.

He claimed Clara had planned the entire incident to seize control of the company.

The interviewer asked whether Clara had somehow forced him to grab her in front of dozens of witnesses.

Dominic ended the interview early.

Victoria attempted a different strategy.

She invited reporters to her home and spoke about family loyalty. She displayed childhood photographs of Dominic and described herself as a mother defending her only son.

When asked about the money transferred into her consulting company, she called it compensation for decades of unpaid guidance.

When asked why the payments were hidden, she refused to answer.

The public sympathy she expected never arrived.

Meanwhile, Clara returned to Blackwood Hospitality under strict security.

Some employees watched her cautiously. Others applauded when she entered the headquarters lobby.

She did not celebrate.

The company was still in danger.

Several lenders had threatened to withdraw. Restaurant managers were confused about whether the brand would continue. Thousands of employees feared losing their jobs.

Clara’s first action as interim chief executive was to hold a live meeting open to every employee.

She stood on a simple stage without Victoria’s pearls, Dominic’s tailored speeches, or the Blackwood crown logo behind her.

“We cannot repair this company by pretending nothing happened,” she said. “Trust was broken. Money was misused. Employees were ignored. Leadership protected itself instead of protecting the people who did the work.”

She announced an independent wage review, a protected reporting system, and a new board committee with employee representation.

Every worker whose overtime had been improperly removed would be repaid with additional compensation.

Adrian sat in the audience near the back.

After the meeting, Clara found him waiting beside the exit.

“You kept the recording,” she said.

“I thought he would deny it.”

“He did.”

Adrian nodded.

“I was afraid.”

“You still acted.”

“So did you.”

Clara looked away.

“I waited six years.”

“That night, you still walked out.”

She studied the young waiter who had risked his job to preserve the truth.

“What do you want to do next?”

Adrian appeared confused.

“With the company,” Clara explained. “You understand restaurant operations, and you notice when people are being treated unfairly.”

“I’m a waiter.”

“You are a waiter who showed more judgment than several executives.”

Adrian was offered a place in the company’s management training program. He accepted only after Clara promised he would not be used as a publicity symbol.

Maya became director of corporate ethics.

Samuel Price took the role of board chair.

The company abandoned the Blackwood crown logo and began operating under a new name: Hale House Hospitality.

For the first time, Clara’s family name appeared publicly.

Not because she wanted personal glory, but because she refused to let Dominic define the story any longer.
