Chapter 11 - The Father Who Chose the House

Bethany’s lip was split.

A bruise darkened one side of her face.

Richard held a handgun against her ribs.

Sally had never seen him with a weapon.

Perhaps that was why the sight did not seem real at first.

Martin stepped forward.

“Let her go.”

Richard looked at him.

“You always were weak.”

“You lied about Daniel’s death.”

“I signed a report. I did not kill him.”

“You buried an empty coffin.”

“I protected the company.”

“You stole his child.”

Richard’s eyes moved to Sally.

“I gave her a name, a home, and every opportunity.”

“You gave me conditions,” Sally said.

“I gave you a life.”

“You used me to control my mother.”

“I kept Laura out of prison.”

“Did you kill her?”

Bethany began to cry.

Richard pushed the gun harder against her side.

“Stop asking childish questions.”

“Answer me.”

“Your mother made choices.”

“Did you follow her the night she died?”

“Yes.”

The word echoed through the warehouse.

Sally felt Martin move beside her, but she did not look away from Richard.

“Why?”

“She had stolen documents.”

“Did you force her off the road?”

“No.”

“Who did?”

Richard glanced toward the dark warehouse.

“Ask Samuel.”

The tattooed man stood near the entrance, holding a stun launcher. Another masked man remained behind him.

Briggs whispered, “They control the main exit.”

Sally still had the microfilm cylinder beneath her coat.

Richard extended his free hand.

“Give me what Daniel left.”

“Let Bethany go first.”

“You are not in a position to negotiate.”

“You need the evidence intact.”

“I need it destroyed.”

“Then you would have shot me already.”

Richard’s face changed slightly.

Sally understood.

He still needed something only she could provide.

“The index is coded,” she said. “You cannot read it.”

Richard looked toward the metal cylinder beneath her coat.

“Evelyn taught you the cipher?”

“No.”

“Then you are useless.”

“Not to Daniel.”

The lie landed.

Richard’s gaze sharpened.

Sally continued.

“He left instructions only I can complete.”

Bethany looked at her, confused.

Richard considered the claim.

“What instructions?”

“Release her.”

He pushed Bethany toward the tattooed man instead.

“That is not release.”

“She leaves when I have the cylinder.”

Sally took it out slowly.

Martin whispered her name.

She ignored him.

Richard extended his hand.

Behind him, Bethany suddenly drove her heel into the tattooed man’s shin. He cursed and loosened his grip.

Bethany ducked.

Briggs threw the tape recorder at the warehouse light.

Darkness fell.

The gun fired.

The sound was deafening.

Sally dropped behind the storage table.

Martin pulled her toward the rear wall.

A second shot struck metal.

Briggs tackled someone in the dark.

Bethany screamed.

Sally crawled toward the removable brick and felt along the wall. Daniel’s recording had mentioned an emergency route behind Unit 317, but not how to open it.

Her fingers found a metal ring.

She pulled.

A narrow panel opened into an adjacent storage unit.

“Here,” she shouted.

Martin climbed through first.

Sally pushed the cylinder into his hands.

“Take it.”

“I am not leaving you.”

“Go.”

Bethany appeared in the doorway, limping.

Sally grabbed her and pulled her through the panel.

Briggs followed seconds later.

Blood covered his sleeve.

“Are you shot?” Sally asked.

“Grazed.”

They moved through the next unit and into a corridor.

Richard’s voice thundered from behind them.

“Sally!”

A third gunshot struck the wall.

They reached a side door leading to the old storm tunnel.

Bethany stumbled on the ladder.

Martin helped her down.

Briggs remained above long enough to lock the hatch from the inside.

They moved through the water in darkness, guided only by Sally’s flashlight.

Halfway to the river entrance, Bethany collapsed.

“My ankle.”

Sally crouched beside her.

“Can you stand?”

“I do not know.”

Briggs and Martin lifted her between them.

Sirens sounded faintly ahead.

Before entering the warehouse, Briggs had sent Ortiz their location and instructed her to alert police if they missed a scheduled call.

They emerged beside the river as patrol cars surrounded the freight district.

Bethany was taken to an ambulance.

Briggs received treatment for the gunshot graze.

Police entered the warehouse through the main gate.

Richard was gone.

The tattooed attacker was found unconscious near Unit 317. The second man had escaped.

Blood near the table matched Richard’s type, suggesting Briggs injured him during the struggle.

The handgun was recovered.

It was registered to Diane.

By sunrise, authorities issued a warrant for Richard Harrow.

His photograph appeared across every news channel.

Harrow Development’s board suspended him.

Banks froze several company accounts.

Investors withdrew from pending projects.

For the first time in his life, Richard was no longer controlling the story.

But Samuel Crane remained invisible.

The microfilm contained enough evidence to expose shell companies, bribery payments, property theft, and falsified public contracts across three counties.

One reel held records connected to Laura’s death.

The pages showed a payment made two days after the crash.

Recipient code: S.C.

Authorization: R.H.

Purpose: Road clearance.

It was not proof of murder.

But it was close.

The coded index revealed something else.

The black triangle did not represent Richard’s network.

It represented Samuel’s.

Richard had not created the system.

He had entered it.

And according to the final microfilm entry, Samuel Crane had transferred control of the network to a successor.

The successor was listed only by the initials B.H.

Bethany Harrow.
