Chapter 5 - Eighteen Missing Years

Clara sat in the presidential suite wrapped in a white hotel robe while a doctor examined the bruising on her shoulder.

The suite overlooked the dark water of Biscayne Bay. Far below, police vehicles gathered outside the hotel entrance. The reception guests had been escorted into adjoining rooms to provide witness statements.

Arthur stood near the windows speaking quietly with security officers.

Rosa sat beside Clara, refusing to leave.

“You should have seen Daniel’s face,” Rosa whispered. “He looked like someone had opened his grave.”

Clara could not smile.

Her mind was crowded with questions.

Aurelia Group lawyers had arrived carrying sealed files. A retired detective was traveling to the hotel. Arthur had requested an emergency DNA test, but he insisted the evidence already went far beyond physical resemblance.

Clara had called Evelyn.

Her adoptive mother was being transported from their apartment by a private medical team. When Clara tried to explain what was happening, Evelyn became silent.

Then she said something that frightened Clara.

“I always knew the past might find you.”

Before Clara could ask what she meant, the call ended because the paramedics arrived.

Arthur approached slowly.

“May I sit?”

Clara nodded.

He took the chair opposite her.

“What happened after I disappeared?” she asked.

Arthur folded his hands.

“Your mother, Celeste, had inherited controlling ownership of the Aurelia Group from her grandmother. After Celeste died, the shares were supposed to pass to you.”

“My mother died?”

Arthur’s eyes lowered.

“Three weeks before you vanished. A car accident.”

“And my father?”

“He disappeared the same night you did.”

Clara stared at him.

“You think he took me?”

“That was the official theory, but I never believed it.”

“Why?”

“Nathan loved you. He also had no reason to run. He was financially secure and had been cleared of involvement in your mother’s accident.”

Arthur explained that after Emilia vanished, control of her inheritance had been placed in a trust. Arthur became one of three trustees. The second was a respected judge who had since died. The third was a corporate attorney named Malcolm Cross.

Clara’s eyes narrowed.

“Cross?”

“Daniel’s father.”

Arthur nodded.

“Malcolm argued that you were likely dead and that the company required permanent leadership. He attempted several times to dissolve the trust. We stopped him, but over the years, the Cross family gained influence through management contracts, investment partnerships and political connections.”

“Where is Malcolm now?”

“He died five years ago.”

Clara looked toward the door.

“And Daniel became manager here?”

“Against my recommendation. Several board members supported him.”

“Does he know who I am?”

“I don’t know.”

Clara remembered Daniel’s constant hostility. He had reduced her work hours after she questioned missing tips. He had threatened to fire Rosa for reporting a guest who harassed employees. He had access to personnel files, including Clara’s identification documents.

A cold feeling spread through her.

“How long have I worked here?”

“Seven months.”

“And no one noticed my name or my face?”

“Your childhood photographs were never publicly released. The family feared attracting false claims. Your name was Emilia Cole at birth, not Bennett.”

Arthur looked ashamed.

“I saw you several times from a distance. Something about you felt familiar, but I dismissed it. I believed I was seeing what I wanted to see.”

The door opened.

Evelyn entered in a wheelchair, accompanied by a nurse.

Clara ran to her.

Evelyn looked fragile, but her gaze was steady.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“For what?”

“For not telling you everything.”

The room became still.

Evelyn held Clara’s hands.

“The night you were found, you were not alone.”

Arthur stood.

“Who was with her?”

“A man named Nathan Cole.”

Clara stopped breathing.

“My father?”

Evelyn nodded.

“He was injured and terrified. He begged me to protect you. He said powerful people were looking for both of you.”

“Why didn’t you tell the police?”

“I tried. Before I could bring him to the authorities, men arrived at the shelter asking questions. Nathan recognized one of them. He gave me your necklace and told me to take you through the rear exit.”

“What happened to him?”

“I never saw him again.”

Evelyn’s voice broke.

“The next morning, the newspapers reported that Nathan had kidnapped you and was wanted for murder. I was afraid that turning you over would place you in the hands of the same people he was running from.”

Arthur moved closer.

“Did Nathan mention a name?”

May you like

Evelyn looked toward the closed door.

“He said the person behind everything was Malcolm Cross.”
