Chapter 4 - The Hearing Without a Mother

The family court judge refused to delay the hearing.

Daniel’s attorneys claimed I had been properly notified through my registered contact number. They produced delivery confirmations, electronic acknowledgments, and a statement from Dr. Vale declaring that direct contact could worsen my condition.

All of it looked official.

None of it had reached me.

I entered the courtroom twelve minutes after the hearing began, still wearing the navy janitor uniform beneath my coat.

Daniel sat beside Vanessa at the front table.

Lily was not present.

When Daniel saw me, he did not appear surprised.

He leaned toward his attorney and whispered something.

The judge looked over her glasses.

“Mrs. Mercer, you are late.”

“I was not informed of the changed time.”

“Records indicate notice was delivered and acknowledged.”

“To a phone controlled by my husband’s assistant.”

Daniel’s attorney stood.

“Your Honor, Mrs. Mercer continues to make accusations without evidence. My client has tried to maintain a stable environment for his daughter during an extremely difficult period.”

“His daughter?” I said. “She is my daughter too.”

The judge warned me to remain quiet.

Vanessa kept her eyes lowered, performing concern with remarkable precision.

Daniel’s attorney presented the adoption petition.

Vanessa Cole sought legal parental status based on my supposed voluntary relinquishment. Attached to the petition was a notarized statement bearing my signature.

The signature was nearly perfect.

Nearly.

I had signed thousands of foundation letters during my marriage. Daniel knew every curve of my handwriting.

But he had forgotten one detail.

After breaking my wrist in college, I had changed the way I wrote the final letter of my surname. The forged signature used the older version.

“My signature was copied from a document created before my marriage,” I said.

Daniel looked at me for the first time.

The judge studied the page.

“Do you have proof?”

I gave her copies of the counselor’s records and the logbook photographs.

Daniel’s attorney immediately objected.

“These materials appear to have been stolen from private school records.”

“I obtained them while investigating false reports about my child.”

“So Mrs. Mercer admits entering restricted areas under a false identity.”

Daniel’s trap closed around me.

The judge’s expression hardened.

Before I could explain, the courtroom door opened.

Mara entered with Rebecca Sloan.

Rebecca’s face was pale, but she walked directly to the witness area.

“I am Lily Mercer’s school counselor,” she said. “I can verify those records.”

Daniel’s attorney demanded a recess.

The judge granted fifteen minutes.

Daniel passed me as we left the courtroom.

“You always make things worse for yourself,” he whispered.

“Where is Lily?”

“Safe.”

“With whom?”

“Her mother.”

I turned toward Vanessa.

Daniel smiled.

“That reaction is why we are here.”

During the recess, Mara pulled me into a quiet corridor.

“Rebecca’s testimony may stop the adoption, but we still need the original relinquishment document.”

“It is in B12.”

“Then convince Arthur to give it to us.”

“What if he refuses?”

“Then we apply for an emergency preservation order. You do not go into that basement again.”

The courtroom doors reopened.

Rebecca testified that Lily had repeatedly asked to contact me. She described the altered records and provided the copies she had hidden.

Daniel’s attorneys attacked her credibility.

They suggested she misunderstood administrative procedures.

They implied she was angry about a denied promotion.

They displayed emails showing she had received financial counseling from Arthur Hale, making it appear that the two employees had coordinated against the school.

Rebecca’s voice shook, but she did not change her story.

Then Daniel called Dr. Vale.

The psychiatrist described me as obsessive, paranoid, and emotionally volatile.

He claimed I had spoken about taking Lily away from everyone who loved her.

I remembered the actual conversation.

I had told him I wanted to take Lily away from the public attention surrounding Daniel’s political fundraising.

My concern had been transformed into a threat.

“Did Mrs. Mercer sign a voluntary relinquishment in your presence?” the judge asked.

“Yes,” Dr. Vale said.

“No,” I answered.

The judge ordered me to remain silent.

Dr. Vale produced a video.

On the screen, I sat in a private clinic room wearing a hospital robe. My face looked exhausted. Daniel stood beside me while a nurse placed papers on the table.

The recording showed me signing several pages.

My memory returned slowly.

I had been admitted after collapsing at a foundation gala. Daniel told doctors I had mixed medication with alcohol.

I had not been drinking.

At the clinic, he told me the papers authorized temporary care for Lily while I recovered.

The video had no sound.

It did not show what Daniel had said.

It only showed my signature.

The judge looked disturbed.

My own certainty began to fracture.

Had I signed the relinquishment without understanding it?

Daniel watched me carefully.

He wanted me to doubt myself.

Then Rebecca leaned toward Mara and whispered.

Mara stood.

“Your Honor, we request that the full video be examined. The timestamp shows several interruptions.”

Daniel’s attorney objected.

The judge allowed playback at a slower speed.

At the lower corner of the screen, the time moved forward normally.

Then it jumped.

Seven minutes disappeared between the moment the papers were placed before me and the moment I signed.

The recording had been edited.

Dr. Vale’s confidence weakened.

He claimed the clinic system automatically removed inactive footage.

Mara asked why the image changed slightly after the missing section.

He had no answer.

The judge suspended the adoption proceeding and ordered all original records preserved.

It was not a victory.

Daniel retained temporary custody while the court investigated.

As we left, he stopped near the courtroom stairs.

“You embarrassed Lily today,” he said.

“I protected her.”

“You dressed as a janitor and broke into her school.”

“I found documents proving you lied.”

“You found copies. Copies can be fabricated.”

“The originals are in B12.”

The words escaped before I could stop them.

Daniel’s face remained calm.

But Vanessa turned toward him.

That small movement told me everything.

He had not known how much Lily revealed.

Daniel guided Vanessa away.

Mara looked at me with frustration.

“You just told him where to focus.”

“He already knew.”

“Now he knows you know.”

My phone vibrated.

Arthur Hale had sent a message.

MIDNIGHT. RECITAL HALL. BRING THE KEY.

A second message arrived before I could respond.

It was from Daniel.

A photograph showed Lily sitting in the back seat of his car.

Her face was turned toward the window.
