Chapter 1 - Keep Your Inheritance

Arthur Sterling pushed the inheritance transfer papers across the luxury hospital bed with enough force to knock over Clara’s glass of water.

The pages slid beneath the soft blue blanket wrapped around her newborn son.

Clara Sterling did not flinch.

Three hours earlier, she had endured an emergency delivery. Her body still trembled beneath her blush-pink lace maternity gown, but her arms remained steady around the sleeping child resting against her chest.

Lucas Sterling had entered the world weighing six pounds and eleven ounces.

He had his mother’s dark hair.

He had his father’s stubborn chin.

And according to Clara’s parents, he had already become a problem that needed to be erased.

Arthur stood beside the bed in a charcoal business suit, his silver hair perfectly combed despite the fury tightening his face.

“Sign away your twelve percent,” he said coldly. “Or you’re on your own.”

Beatrice Sterling stood on the opposite side of the bed in an immaculate cream designer skirt suit. Diamonds glittered at her throat and wrists. She looked down at the newborn with the same expression she might have used for dirt on an expensive carpet.

“We warned you,” Beatrice said. “You disappeared for nearly a year. You refused to tell us who the father was. Now you expect to walk back into our family with a fatherless child and retain a controlling interest in Sterling Medical?”

Clara lowered her eyes to Lucas.

The baby’s tiny fist opened against her chest.

“He isn’t fatherless,” she said.

Arthur laughed without humor.

“Then where is he?”

Before Clara could answer, the double doors of the private hospital suite swung open.

Julian Vance entered carrying a bouquet of white roses.

He wore a navy-blue suit tailored so precisely that even the hospital’s fluorescent light seemed to bend around him. His expression was composed, but the two corporate attorneys behind him carried leather briefcases, and the Chief of Surgery walked at Julian’s side as though escorting a head of state.

Arthur’s face went blank.

Beatrice’s lips parted.

“Julian Vance?” she whispered.

Julian did not acknowledge them.

He crossed the room, placed the roses on the table, and knelt beside Clara’s bed. His entire expression changed when he looked at her.

“You should be resting,” he said softly.

“You were in surgery.”

“I came as soon as I could.”

He kissed Clara’s forehead.

Then he reached toward Lucas.

The newborn’s fingers curled around Julian’s index finger.

For one brief moment, the most feared executive in American healthcare looked almost helpless.

Julian swallowed.

“Hello, son.”

Arthur stepped backward.

The color drained from Beatrice’s face.

Julian slowly rose and turned toward them.

His calmness was more frightening than rage.

“Did you just call my son fatherless?”

Neither Arthur nor Beatrice answered.

One of the attorneys, Daniel Mercer, opened his briefcase and placed several legal documents on the hospital table.

Arthur’s pen slipped from his hand and struck the floor.

Clara smiled faintly while holding Lucas close.

Julian adjusted one cuff.

“Keep your inheritance,” he said. “You’ll be needing lawyers instead.”

Arthur stared at the documents.

“What is this?”

Daniel opened the first folder.

“A petition for emergency injunction against Sterling Medical Group.”

The second attorney, Miriam Cross, placed another document beside it.

“A federal whistleblower disclosure concerning patient deaths, falsified surgical records, unlawful billing practices, and the diversion of charitable funds.”

Beatrice gripped the edge of the bed.

“That’s impossible.”

Clara looked at her mother.

“No,” she said quietly. “It’s overdue.”

The Chief of Surgery stepped forward.

“My office has already suspended Sterling Medical’s operating privileges at three affiliated hospitals.”

Arthur’s arrogance cracked.

“You can’t do that.”

“I already did.”

Arthur turned to Julian.

“You planned this.”

Julian’s eyes remained fixed on him.

“No. Your daughter did.”

Silence filled the room.

Clara’s parents looked at her as though seeing a stranger.

She had spent thirty-one years being dismissed as the emotional daughter, the reckless daughter, the daughter who would eventually surrender because surrendering was what Sterling women had always done.

They had never imagined she might be collecting evidence.

They had never imagined the father of her child might be Julian Vance.

And they had certainly never imagined that the signatures they had demanded from her would become proof of coercion.

Arthur pointed at the transfer papers.

“This was a private family discussion.”

A small red light blinked beneath the television.

The attending nurse quietly lifted a hospital tablet.

“For the safety of high-risk patients, all interactions in this suite are recorded.”

Beatrice’s face collapsed.

Julian stepped closer to Arthur.

“You threatened a woman three hours after emergency surgery. You attempted to force her to surrender corporate shares while she was medicated. And you insulted my child.”

Arthur tried to recover his authority.

“You think money makes you untouchable?”

“No,” Julian said. “Evidence does.”

The door opened again.

Two investigators entered.

Arthur looked toward Clara.

For the first time in her life, her father was afraid of her.

“What have you done?”

Clara held Lucas against her heart.

“What you taught me to do,” she replied.

“I protected what belongs to me.”

The investigators approached Arthur and Beatrice.

But before either could be escorted away, Arthur looked at the documents on the table and suddenly smiled.

It was not a defeated smile.

It was the smile of a man who still believed he knew something no one else did.

“You think twelve percent makes you powerful?” he asked Clara. “You don’t even know what those shares control.”

Clara’s expression tightened.

Arthur leaned closer as an investigator took his arm.

“You should ask Julian what happened in Room 614.”

Julian went completely still.

Clara saw it.

Only for a second.

But she saw it.

Arthur laughed as he was led toward the door.

May you like

And when Clara looked at Julian, the tenderness in his face had been replaced by something she had never seen before.

Fear.
