Chapter 13 - The Ship Called Orpheus

Fog covered the harbor when Claire and Carter arrived. Daniel waited aboard a Coast Guard cutter with a federal warrant tied to the Janus investigation. Orpheus floated twelve miles offshore, its lights burning despite the silence on its decks.
Boarding officers found no crew.
The dining table had been set for three. Coffee remained warm. A woman’s scarf lay across one chair. Claire recognized it from childhood photographs of Eleanor.
Below deck, they discovered medical supplies, maps, and a bank of surveillance equipment. Screens displayed live feeds from Vale properties, the courthouse holding Everett, and Lydia’s former apartment.
Someone had monitored them all for years.
In the captain’s cabin, Claire found a video recorded that morning.
Nathaniel appeared on screen.
He was older than the photograph, his face hollow with illness but unmistakably alive.
“Claire,” he began, “if you reached Orpheus, then Everett has failed to keep you blind. I owe you more truth than this recording can hold.”
He explained that the Council began as a wartime consortium formed to protect industrial assets. It evolved into a hereditary alliance whose members manipulated corporate succession. Vale Meridian’s logistics network made Janus possible, and Claire’s voting trust gave her the power either to expose or preserve it.
Nathaniel had staged his death after learning Everett planned to use Bradley to activate the incapacity clause. He tried to reach Eleanor, but the Council captured her first.
“She is alive,” he said. “I have seen her. But freedom has a price they expect you to pay.”
The video glitched.
An alarm sounded in the engine room. Officers discovered explosives attached to the fuel system, their timer showing less than four minutes.
Evacuation began immediately.
Claire refused to leave without the computer drive, but Carter pulled her toward the deck as Daniel removed the storage unit. They reached the cutter moments before Orpheus erupted in flame.
The explosion tore the vessel open. Burning fragments vanished into the gray water.
Back on shore, forensic technicians examined the recovered drive. Most files were encrypted, but one folder opened automatically when Claire placed her thumb on a biometric reader.
It contained a live video feed.
Eleanor sat in a bright room beside a window overlooking mountains. Her hair was silver brown. She looked directly into the camera as if she could see Claire.
“Mom?” Claire whispered.
Eleanor lifted her head.
The feed cut to a black screen with a countdown beginning at seventy two hours.
Text appeared below it.
TRANSFER CONTROL OF VALE MERIDIAN TO THE JANUS TRUST.
Then a second camera activated.

Nathaniel was seated in another room, his wrists secured to a chair.
The Council had both of them.
