THE NIGHT HER FUTURE ENDED / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Boardroom at Midnight

The Vale boardroom occupied the oldest wing of the estate.

Its long oak table had survived fires, wars, financial crashes, and four generations of arguments. That night, it witnessed the end of the Laurent family’s deception.

Edmund entered wearing dry clothes. Adrian sat to his right. Across the table, Victor and Beatrice Laurent waited with their attorney.

Celeste insisted on joining them.

“This concerns my future,” she said.

Edmund took his seat.

“It concerns your father’s financial representations.”

The Vale chief financial officer placed several folders on the table.

The investigation moved quickly.

Victor had presented the Laurent hotels as profitable properties temporarily affected by renovation costs. In reality, two hotels were close to foreclosure. A third had been used as collateral for loans from multiple lenders.

More seriously, Victor had circulated draft documents suggesting Vale Holdings had agreed to guarantee the debt.

The documents carried Adrian’s electronic signature.

Adrian had never signed them.

Victor claimed it was a clerical misunderstanding.

The chief financial officer displayed the file history.

The signature had been copied from a charity agreement and placed into the loan draft by an employee of Laurent Management.

Everyone looked at Victor.

Celeste spoke first.

“My father would never do that.”

Victor said nothing.

Edmund folded his hands.

“Who instructed the employee?”

Victor’s attorney requested a private consultation.

Edmund refused.

“You used my family’s name to influence banks. You will answer here, or the answer will be found in court.”

Beatrice turned on her husband.

“Tell them it was the finance director.”

Victor looked at the documents.

Finally, he whispered, “I approved it.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

Adrian stared at the man who had expected to become his father-in-law.

“Why?”

Victor’s laugh was empty.

“Because no one lends money to a dying name. They lend money to a name like Vale.”

Celeste looked at Edmund.

“You have more than enough to save the hotels.”

“That is irrelevant.”

“Hundreds of people work there.”

“And your father risked their livelihoods by hiding debt.”

“So punish him. Do not destroy everything.”

Edmund’s gaze remained steady.

“You still believe consequences are something done to you by others.”

Celeste gripped the edge of the table.

“You planned this entire evening.”

“I planned to observe your behavior at the gate. Your father’s fraud revealed itself afterward.”

Beatrice leaned forward.

“We can resolve this privately. The wedding can continue. The families can announce a restructuring. No one needs to know.”

Adrian looked at her in disbelief.

“You still think there will be a wedding?”

Beatrice’s face tightened.

“You love my daughter.”

“I loved the person she pretended to be.”

Celeste turned toward him.

“Everything I did was for our future.”

“You threatened employees.”

“They were servants.”

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Adrian’s expression became cold.

“There it is.”

Celeste stood.

“I will not sit here while people who clean floors are treated as more important than me.”

Edmund also rose.

“In this house, their dignity is more important than your pride.”

He looked toward the attorney.

“Prepare formal notices. Vale Holdings will withdraw from every discussion involving Laurent Management. Send the forged documents to the banks and the authorities. Also review every charity account connected to the proposed foundation.”

Celeste’s head snapped up.

“The foundation has nothing to do with this.”

The chief financial officer opened another folder.

“Then you can explain why one hundred and twenty thousand dollars in preliminary donations were transferred to a company controlled by your mother.”

Beatrice went completely still.

Adrian looked at Celeste.

“Did you know?”

Celeste said nothing.

That silence answered him.

The engagement had ended at the gate.

By midnight, so had the Laurent family’s illusion of power.
