Chapter 14 - The False Rescue
Claire did not tell Daniel she had found Anna’s message.
She gave the coordinates to federal investigators, but Elena warned that someone inside the task force might still report to Meridian.
They created two rescue teams.
The official convoy followed Daniel’s coordinates.
Claire, Rebecca, Jordan, and Melissa traveled separately toward a second location marked on Anna’s map.
Lily stayed in a protected medical residence with Dr. Warren.
For the first time since the birthday dinner, Claire left her willingly.
“Bring Rose home,” Lily said.
“I’ll try.”
“Don’t try.”
Lily placed her small hand over Claire’s.
“Promise.”
Claire promised.
Anna’s map led them to an abandoned railway station forty miles from Daniel’s coordinates.
At midnight, a freight train entered the station without lights.
Three black vehicles waited beside the tracks.
Men transferred medical containers from the train.
Then Claire saw Rose.
She was handcuffed to Helena.
Melissa inhaled sharply.
The resemblance between her and Helena was undeniable.
Rebecca touched Melissa’s shoulder.
“She is my sister.”
Melissa stepped away.
“She used me to hurt Lily.”
“She may have been used too.”
Claire raised binoculars.
Rose looked weak but conscious.
Helena spoke to a man in a dark coat.
He opened the rear door of a vehicle.
Inside sat an older woman.
Anna.
Claire’s knees almost failed.
Her mother’s hair was white now. Her face was thin, but she was alive.
Jordan whispered, “We need to call the agents.”
“No,” Claire said. “The message warned us.”
A helicopter sounded in the distance.
The official rescue team had discovered Daniel’s route was false and was redirecting toward the railway station.
Helena looked up.
She had expected them.
Floodlights activated around the station.
Armed guards emerged from the train.
A loudspeaker announced:
“Claire Mercer, bring the Hollow Creek drive onto the platform.”
Claire’s hand moved toward the metal drive in her pocket.
Melissa stared at her.
“They know we’re here.”
Rebecca stepped forward.
“I’ll go.”
“No,” Claire said.
“She wants the Vale line.”
“She wants all of us.”
Anna suddenly stood inside the vehicle.
Even from a distance, Claire saw her shaking her head.
Do not come.
Helena placed a pistol against Rose’s neck.
“Thirty seconds.”
Claire walked onto the platform.
She held up the drive.
“Let Rose and Anna go.”
Helena smiled.
“You sound like your mother.”
“You sound like Miriam.”
The smile disappeared.
“Do not compare me to her.”
“You continued her work.”
“I tried to control what she created.”
“You used children.”
“I kept them alive.”
“You imprisoned Rose.”
“I protected her from Daniel.”
Behind Helena, Anna slowly reached toward the vehicle door.
A guard stopped her.
Claire moved closer.
“You gave Lily the activation compound.”
“No.”
“Rose did.”
“Rose believed it was a stabilizer.”
Rose began crying.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire looked at her.
“It wasn’t your fault.”
Helena pressed the weapon closer.
“The drive.”
Claire held it out.
Helena sent a guard to retrieve it.
As he approached, Melissa stepped from the shadows on the opposite platform.
“Helena!”
Helena turned.
For several seconds, the two women stared at each other like reflections separated by time.
Melissa lifted the missing Meridian vial.
“I know what Grandma made me inject into Lily.”
Helena’s face changed.
“Put that down.”
“You said it was a vitamin.”
“I never spoke to you.”
“You wore the green coat.”
“That was Miriam.”
“Miriam was dead.”
Helena looked toward Rebecca.
“No. She wasn’t.”
A shot rang out.
The guard beside Anna collapsed.
Anna had taken his weapon.
Chaos erupted.
Rebecca ran toward Rose.
Jordan triggered the station’s emergency lights, plunging half the platform into darkness.
Claire struck the approaching guard and pulled the drive away.
Melissa threw the vial beneath the train.
Helena fired at her.
Rebecca pushed Melissa aside and took the bullet in her shoulder.
Federal helicopters descended.
Guards scattered.
Anna opened the vehicle door and shouted for Claire.
Claire reached Rose and broke the chain connecting her to Helena.
Helena grabbed Claire’s coat.
“You have no idea what Anna did.”
Claire shoved her away.
“She saved us.”
Helena laughed.
“She selected you.”
Before Claire could ask what that meant, an explosion tore through the rear freight car.
The platform shook.
Smoke covered the tracks.
When it cleared, Helena was gone.
So was Anna.
Only her dropped pistol remained.
Rose collapsed in Claire’s arms.
Federal agents secured the station.
They found medical containers filled with blood samples from missing children.
They recovered records connecting twelve hospitals to Meridian.
But they did not find Helena.
