Chapter 15 - The Child Outside the Photograph)

The next morning began with burned pancakes and ended with a sealed box from Nora Bell.
She brought it to Four Spoons after closing. Her copper hair had faded nearly white, but she still smelled faintly of lavender. The boys welcomed her as an honorary aunt and presented four competing drawings for the restaurant wall.
Nora waited until they went upstairs before placing the box in front of Elena and Adrian.
“I found this behind a loose panel in my old desk,” she said. “The hospital returned the desk when the annex closed. I had not opened the back in years.”
Inside was a compact disc, two undeveloped film cartridges, and a page torn from Elena's week-nine prenatal report.
The missing page.
Elena read it once, then again.
Five viable cardiac patterns observed.
Four shared one placental structure. The fifth was separate.
“That can happen early,” Nora said. “A heartbeat can stop. A fetus can be absorbed. Later scans might show four.”
“But you do not think that happened,” Adrian said.
Nora looked at the film cartridges. “I developed one frame before I came. I wanted to be certain.”
She removed a photograph from her coat.
It showed the neonatal unit on the night Cameron disappeared. Four incubators stood beneath warming lights. Three held boys. The fourth was empty.
In the background, Dr. Sloane pushed a covered bassinet toward the private elevator.
Evelyn walked beside him.
The label attached to the bassinet was barely visible. Adrian enlarged the photograph with his phone. Two words emerged from the grain.
INFANT E.
Elena sat down.
“I gave birth to four babies.”
“That is what everyone told you,” Nora said. “You were unconscious for twelve hours.”
Adrian inserted the compact disc into an old computer Naomi brought from her office. Most files were corrupted. One video opened.
Dr. Sloane stood in a laboratory holding a newborn wrapped in a white blanket. Only the side of the infant's face was visible.
“Fifth live birth,” he said to the camera. “Female. Fraternal separation confirmed. Maternal record will remain four until longitudinal viability is established.”
The video lasted nine seconds.
Elena made no sound. Adrian knelt beside her chair and held both her hands.
Four sons slept upstairs.
Somewhere, if the recording was real, a daughter had grown for seven years under another name.
Naomi began making calls. The district attorney reopened the hospital evidence search. An international alert went out for Sloane. Evelyn's attorneys refused an interview unless offered immunity, which prosecutors rejected.
At midnight, Adrian reviewed security video from the gala. He searched for Sloane, the black sedan, or anyone who might have entered the control booth.
Instead, he saw a girl.
She stood alone near the ballroom's service door moments before the lights failed. She appeared seven or eight years old, with dark hair, gray eyes, and a shallow dimple beside her mouth.
She looked directly into the camera.
Then she raised a silver compass.
Adrian called Elena to the screen.
Before she reached him, the restaurant telephone rang.
He answered.
A child's voice whispered, “You found the four boys.”
Adrian looked at the frozen image of the girl.
“Who are you?”
There was a pause, followed by the distant sound of a train announcement.
“Ask your mother what she named me.”
The line went dead.
Upstairs, four bedroom doors opened at once.
Adrian and Elena looked toward the ceiling as their sons called for them.

On the computer screen, the unknown girl continued to stare out of the past, holding a compass that should not have existed.
And somewhere beneath the noise of Manhattan, a fifth child was waiting to be found.
