Chapter 11 - The Coffin

The remains inside Margaret Graves's coffin belonged to another woman.
Dental records identified her as Dr. Susan Vale, a behavioral researcher who disappeared fourteen years earlier.
Elena arrested her mother.
Margaret didn't resist.
That frightened Ryan more than anything else.
They returned to the base under heavy escort.
For the first time since arriving, Elena addressed the installation publicly.
She announced an independent investigation.
She suspended multiple senior officers.
She established direct reporting channels for complaints.
Then she did something Ryan hadn't expected.
She addressed the bar incident.
Without excuses.
Without hiding his identity.
Sergeant Ryan Cole and the others would face disciplinary review.
Ryan watched from the back of the room.
Afterward he approached her.
"You could've buried it."
Elena looked at him.
"That's exactly how Sentinel survived."
Ryan nodded.
"I deserve whatever happens."
"Yes."
He almost smiled.
"You really don't soften anything."
"No."
Then Elena added, "But one terrible night doesn't automatically define an entire life."
Ryan looked at her.
"Your actions afterward matter."
For the first time, Ryan understood why people followed her.
Not because she was intimidating.
Because she refused to change the rules when changing them would benefit her.
That evening, Margaret requested to speak with Elena alone.
Elena refused.
Ryan and Price remained.
Margaret seemed pleased.
"Good."
Elena sat.
"Where is Michael?"
"I told you."
"You don't know."
"Correct."
"Then give me something useful."
Margaret slid a photograph across the table.
It showed six officers at a conference.
Kessler.
Michael.
Andrew Cole.
Margaret.
Susan Vale.
And one other man.
Elena recognized him instantly.
General Nathaniel Graves.
Her father.
Elena stared.
"My father had Alzheimer's."
"Eventually."
"He couldn't run Sentinel."
Margaret leaned forward.
"Elena, your father didn't develop Alzheimer's."
Silence.
"What?"
"He was exposed to an experimental compound intended to interfere with memory consolidation."
Ryan felt sick.
Margaret continued.
"They destroyed his memory because he tried to help Michael."
Elena's hands curled into fists.
Her father had died eight years earlier unable to recognize his own daughter.
Margaret pushed another document across the table.
"His final lucid statement."
Elena opened it.
Three words were written in shaky handwriting.
CHECK THE PROMOTIONS.
Elena looked up.
"What promotions?"
May you like
Margaret answered.
"Yours."
