Chapter 8 - What the Family Learned

The birthday video spread through the family faster than Harold expected.
Vanessa had sent a short preview to a private group chat before dinner. One of the relatives saved it. By the next afternoon, nearly everyone knew what had happened.
The reactions were divided.
Some condemned Adrian immediately.
Others told Harold he was being too harsh.
“You know how Adrian is,” Harold’s older sister said. “He makes foolish choices, but he’s still your son.”
“That is exactly why he believed there would be no consequences,” Harold replied.
Several relatives returned expensive gifts Harold had supposedly purchased for them. Harold learned that Adrian had been using his accounts to maintain the appearance of success.
Luxury dinners, family trips, business celebrations, and even charitable donations had been funded by Harold without his knowledge.
Diane helped him create a complete record of the spending.
The total exceeded four hundred thousand dollars over three years.
Not all of it could be recovered.
But Helen negotiated with the bank and stopped the pending transfer. She also contacted the authorities regarding the forged documents.
Harold chose not to seek the harshest possible punishment.
He did, however, refuse to hide what Adrian had done.
The property transaction collapsed. Adrian’s investors withdrew after learning that his claimed financial partner had never agreed to participate.
His business reputation suffered.
Vanessa sold the black luxury vehicle because they could no longer afford the payments.
They moved into a modest rental home across town.
For the first time in years, Adrian had to live within the limits of his own income.
Harold expected to feel victorious when they left.
Instead, he stood in the driveway watching the moving truck disappear and felt an aching sadness.
Diane placed a hand on his shoulder.
“You did the right thing.”
“I know,” Harold said.
Knowing did not make it painless.
May you like
But pain was not proof that the decision was wrong.
Sometimes it was simply the price of finally refusing to be used.
