Chapter 13 - The Witness Must Choose

Elena stared at the hospital video.

“Where is Julian?”

Conrad smiled.

“Alive, for the moment.”

Federal agents attempted to trace the transmission, but Meridian had routed it through the hotel network.

Thomas remained rigid in the hospital bed.

Conrad held a pistol low beside him, hidden from anyone entering the room.

“You need the settlor’s witness,” Conrad said. “Mr. Bell will provide authorization after you agree to one condition.”

“What condition?”

“You erase the original archive.”

Adrian moved closer to the screen.

“Meridian wants the counterfeit files released alone.”

“Very good,” Conrad said. “Perhaps your training was not wasted.”

Noah looked around the chamber.

“If the originals disappear and the false files release, Meridian can accuse anyone it wants.”

“Not anyone,” Conrad replied. “Only those who require correction.”

Elena kept her voice calm.

“You kidnapped Thomas once and failed. You will fail again.”

“This time, I do not need to leave the hospital.”

He raised the pistol into view.

“One remote command can release the supplemental archive. Another can destroy the originals. Mr. Bell’s witness credential allows you to choose which command becomes permanent.”

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

For a moment, his eyes shifted toward the left side of the room.

Elena noticed.

A metallic reflection appeared in the glass of a cabinet behind Conrad.

Part of a hospital room number.

7B.

She muted the screen.

“Thomas was moved to a secure floor on level nine,” she told the federal agents.

“So this is not his room,” one answered.

“The hospital has an older recovery wing called Building B.”

Graham spoke.

“It connects to the Vale Foundation research center.”

Elena faced him.

“Your foundation has a private hospital wing?”

“Vanessa oversaw it.”

“Of course she did.”

The federal team relayed the location to local tactical units.

Elena unmuted the screen.

“We accept.”

Noah looked at her, but she held up one hand.

Conrad smiled.

“Destroy the original archive.”

“We need Thomas’s authorization.”

“He will provide it after you select the command.”

Elena approached the verification console.

Two options appeared.

RELEASE VERIFIED ORIGINALS

ERASE ORIGINALS AND RELEASE SUPPLEMENTAL RECORDS

A third command had been hidden beneath an administrator menu.

PAUSE FOR MANUAL REVIEW.

It required the witness credential first.

Conrad could see the same interface.

“No delays,” he said.

Elena placed her finger over the erase command.

“Tell me what happened to Julian.”

“He became inconvenient.”

“That is not an answer.”

“You are wasting time.”

“I am making sure you still control what you claim to control.”

Conrad moved the pistol against Thomas’s ribs.

Julian suddenly appeared behind him.

Blood marked one side of Julian’s face, but his hands were free.

He struck Conrad with a metal tray.

The gun fired.

The hospital camera fell sideways.

Thomas disappeared from view.

Elena heard shouting, another gunshot, and glass breaking.

The screen went black.

“Thomas!” Noah shouted.

The archive console flashed.

WITNESS CONNECTION LOST.

AUTOMATIC RELEASE IN SIXTY MINUTES.

Elena called Julian.

No answer.

Federal officers in the chamber reported that tactical teams were three minutes from Building B.

Adrian examined the console.

“There may be a local witness override.”

“Can you find it?” Elena asked.

“I helped Meridian design part of the supplemental interface, not Amelia’s original system.”

“Then think like Meridian. How did they plan to bypass Thomas?”

Adrian searched the administrator logs.

He found an unauthorized credential tested repeatedly over the previous eight years.

The user name was GVALE.

Graham stepped back.

“I never accessed this system.”

Adrian opened the activity history.

The credential had been created using Graham’s executive biometric signature.

Someone had attempted to register him as a substitute witness.

Vanessa.

“She needed Graham to replace Thomas,” Elena said.

Noah looked at their father.

“Can he?”

Adrian read the requirements.

“Only if he makes a sworn confession about the settlor’s death.”

The chamber became silent.

Graham stared at the screen.

A text field appeared.

SUBSTITUTE WITNESS MUST DISCLOSE ALL MATERIAL KNOWLEDGE REGARDING AMELIA LAURENT’S DEATH.

Elena faced him.

“My mother built this because she knew you would eventually need the archive.”

Graham looked older than he had the night before.

“I did not kill Amelia.”

“That is not what the system asked.”

“I tried to stop her from leaving.”

“How?”

Graham’s breathing became unsteady.

“The night of the crash, Vanessa called me. She said Amelia had taken Noah and was driving toward the coastal airfield.”

Noah watched him.

“What did you do?”

“I followed.”

“Alone?” Elena asked.

“No.”

“Who was with you?”

Graham closed his eyes.

“Conrad.”

Elena felt anger rise, but she controlled it.

“Continue.”

“We caught Amelia on the coastal road. I pulled in front of her car and forced her to stop.”

“You endangered a car carrying a child.”

“I believed Vanessa’s people were approaching from the opposite direction. I wanted Amelia to turn back.”

“What happened?”

“She got out. We argued in the rain. She told me Vanessa was connected to the network. She said the hotel had been used for crimes.”

“Did you believe her?”

“I believed she believed it.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“No.”

Graham looked at Noah.

“Amelia said she would expose everything and leave the country with both children.”

“Both?” Elena asked.

“She planned to take you from the house that night.”

Elena remembered waking the next morning to strangers and police officers.

“What happened after the argument?”

“Amelia returned to her car. Conrad tried to take Noah from the rear seat. She drove away before he could open the door.”

“And you followed.”

“Yes.”

“How fast?”

“Too fast.”

Graham’s voice broke.

“The road was wet. Conrad told me to force her toward the shoulder. He said she would stop.”

“You obeyed him?”

“I struck the rear side of her car.”

Noah looked away.

Graham continued.

“She lost control. The car went through the barrier.”

Elena’s hands became fists.

“You caused the crash.”

“I caused her to lose control.”

“That is the crash.”

“I went down the embankment. Amelia was alive for several minutes.”

“What did she say?”

Graham looked at Elena.

“She told me to save Noah.”

“And did you?”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

“She told me the truth was beneath the hotel and that you would one day find it.”

The system recorded every word.

A progress bar moved across the screen.

CONFESSION INCOMPLETE.

Elena stepped closer.

“What are you still hiding?”

Graham’s eyes filled with tears.

“Amelia could have survived.”

No one moved.

“How?” Elena asked.

“The car caught fire slowly. I could have pulled her out after I moved Noah.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Conrad said the police would discover the archive if Amelia lived. He said Vanessa would expose my financial fraud and I would lose everything.”

Elena’s voice was almost a whisper.

“So you left her.”

“I stood there.”

“You watched her die.”

“I was afraid.”

“You always are.”

The system displayed:

SUBSTITUTE WITNESS VERIFIED.

Thomas’s credential was no longer necessary.

The archive paused.

The doors behind them locked automatically.

A new message appeared.

CONFESSION ACCEPTED.

CRIMINAL EVIDENCE COPIED TO EXTERNAL AUTHORITIES.

Graham stared at it.

“You knew that would happen.”

“No,” Elena said. “But my mother knew you.”

The hospital feed returned.

Julian appeared beside Thomas. Both were alive. Conrad had been wounded and recaptured by tactical officers.

For the first time, the group allowed themselves to breathe.

Then Adrian opened the administrator log.

His expression changed.

“What is it?” Noah asked.

“The supplemental archive was not the only alteration.”

He displayed a command scheduled years earlier.

If Graham’s confession was accepted, a separate sealed file would release automatically.

The destination was not a court or newsroom.

It was a private recipient labeled HEIR ZERO.

The file had been transmitted thirty seconds ago.
