Chapter 12 - THE OLD WHITAKER SITE

The abandoned Whitaker Construction site sat near the river, surrounded by rusted fencing and empty warehouses.
David had not entered the property since the company closed.
Detective Perez wanted to organize a tactical response, but Richard claimed Victor had cameras throughout the site and would kill Brandon if he saw police.
David did not trust Richard.
He also did not trust Brandon.
But he knew Victor wanted the ledger, and the original was now missing with Marcus Cole.
Emily still had the photographs.
Together, they created a false copy by printing selected pages at the motel office and placing them inside an old red binder Patricia found in her luggage.
“You are not going alone,” Emily said.
“Victor expects me alone.”
“He also expects the real ledger. We’re already changing the plan.”
Perez gave David a concealed transmitter and instructed him to keep Victor talking.
At 2:10 a.m., David drove through the gates of the abandoned site.
The old office building stood in darkness.
A single light burned inside the main warehouse.
David entered carrying the false ledger.
Brandon sat tied to a metal chair beneath the light. His face was bruised. Blood darkened the collar of his blue polo shirt.
Richard stood beside him with his hands raised.
Victor Lang emerged from the shadows.
He was older than David remembered, but his posture remained upright and controlled. His hair was white at the temples. A thin scar crossed his cheek.
“David Whitaker,” Victor said. “Still cleaning up everyone else’s mess.”
David held up the binder.
“Let them go.”
Victor smiled.
“You always did mistake demands for power.”
Brandon struggled against the restraints.
“Don’t give it to him.”
David looked at him.
“Now you want to protect something?”
“I didn’t know he was going to kill you.”
Richard stared at his son.
“You gave David poison.”
Victor laughed softly.
“Brandon gave him weak doses. Enough to make him ill, not enough to finish the job.”
Brandon’s voice cracked.
“You said it was only to make him fail the insurance examination.”
“You believed what was convenient.”
David looked at Victor.
“Why insure me if you planned to kill me slowly?”
“The insurance policy was one benefit. The real purpose was to force the trust into emergency succession.”
“Brandon would gain control.”
“Temporarily.”
Brandon went still.
“What does that mean?”
Victor walked behind him.
“It means you were useful until the assets moved.”
“You said the lake project was ours.”
“There is no lake project.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Victor continued.
“The property is contaminated land purchased through shell companies. Blue Crest financing converted forged guarantees into liquid funds. Once the money cleared, the borrowers would collapse, the assets would be seized, and the people involved would blame one another.”
David held the false ledger tighter.
“And Laura’s records?”
“They connect the old network to the new one.”
“Who is the Judge?”
Victor’s smile faded.
“You still don’t know.”
“Laura didn’t either.”
“She came close.”
David watched him.
“Did you kill her?”
Brandon looked up sharply.
Richard whispered, “Victor.”
Victor’s eyes remained on David.
“No.”
“Did Marcus Cole?”
“No.”
“Did Richard?”
Richard stepped forward.
“I loved Laura.”
The warehouse became silent.
David turned slowly.
“What did you say?”
Richard’s face crumpled.
“Before Patricia. Before you. Laura and I knew each other.”
David felt the past rearranging itself.
“She never mentioned you.”
“She was ashamed.”
“Of what?”
“Of me.”
Victor looked amused.
“Tell him the rest.”
Richard’s breathing became uneven.
“Laura discovered the supplier fraud because I showed her. I was involved at first, but I wanted out. Samuel planned to expose everything. Then he died.”
“Who killed him?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’ve lied for twenty-two years.”
“I know.”
Patricia’s voice came from the warehouse entrance.
“And you’re still lying.”
She stood beside Emily and Officer Perez.
Victor immediately grabbed Brandon by the hair and pressed a knife to his throat.
Perez raised her weapon.
“Drop it.”
Victor pulled Brandon closer.
“No one moves.”
David kept his eyes on Richard.
“What are you hiding?”
Richard looked toward Patricia.
Then toward Emily.
“The Judge wasn’t a stranger.”
Victor’s knife pressed deeper against Brandon’s skin.
“Enough.”
Richard spoke anyway.
“The Judge was Laura’s father.”
David stared at him.
Laura had always said her father died before they met.
“What was his name?”
Richard opened his mouth.
A gunshot exploded from the upper walkway.
May you like
The light above them shattered.
Darkness swallowed the warehouse.
