Chapter 8 - The Night Sarah Finally Heard the Truth

Officer Cole separated everyone.

Carolyn spoke in the library with Rebecca present.

Sarah remained in the dining room.

Greg was taken into Robert's study.

Lily sat beside David in the kitchen.

For the first time that night, the house was quiet.

Lily stared at the floor.

"Is Dad going to jail?"

David did not lie.

"I don't know."

"Is Mom?"

"I don't know that either."

Lily wiped her eyes.

"I was mean to Grandma."

David waited.

"Mom said Grandma wanted attention."

Lily's voice cracked.

"And she said old people forget when you're mean to them."

David closed his eyes.

Children learned cruelty exactly the way they learned language.

By hearing it often enough.

"You understand what you did was wrong?"

Lily nodded.

"I spit in her food."

"Yes."

"I thought Mom would laugh."

"She did."

Lily started crying again.

David crouched in front of her.

"Listen to me. Doing something wrong doesn't mean you have to keep doing wrong things."

She looked at him.

"What do I do?"

"You tell the truth."

"I did."

"Then tomorrow you tell it again."

Lily nodded.

"And then you apologize to Grandma. Not because you want her to forgive you."

"Why then?"

"Because she deserves to hear that you know you hurt her."

Across the house, Officer Cole asked Carolyn a direct question.

"Do you feel safe staying here tonight?"

Carolyn looked around Robert's library.

For months she had told herself it was still her home.

Now she realized she had been moving through it like a guest asking permission.

"No."

Officer Cole nodded.

"Do you want Sarah and Greg removed?"

Carolyn hesitated.

Rebecca said nothing.

Carolyn thought about Sarah as a little girl.

Six years old, sleeping beside Carolyn during thunderstorms.

Sixteen, screaming that she hated everyone because Carolyn would not let her go to a party.

Twenty-eight, placing newborn Lily into her arms.

Thirty-eight, watching her husband take Carolyn's keys.

Carolyn whispered, "Yes."

The word almost broke her.

But she repeated it.

"Yes."

Officer Cole stood.

Greg was told he had to leave immediately.

He became furious.

"I live here."

Carolyn appeared in the doorway.

"No."

Greg turned.

Carolyn looked directly at him.

"You occupied my house."

Sarah entered behind Officer Cole.

"Mom, where are we supposed to go?"

Carolyn looked at her.

"You should have thought about that before you tried to steal it."

Sarah flinched.

"Please."

"Do not ask me tonight."

"Mom."

"Not tonight."

Greg pointed at David.

"This is him. He's always wanted to turn you against Sarah."

Carolyn laughed softly.

"David hasn't been home in eleven months."

"He poisoned you."

"With what? Evidence?"

Greg's face twisted.

"You ungrateful old woman."

The room changed.

David stepped forward.

Carolyn raised one hand.

"No."

David stopped.

Carolyn walked toward Greg.

He towered over her.

She did not care.

"You entered my home because you had nowhere else to go."

Greg said nothing.

"I paid your debts because Sarah begged me."

Silence.

"I fed you. I gave your daughter a bedroom. I kept quiet when you stole from me because I was ashamed that my own family could do such a thing."

Greg looked away.

Carolyn continued.

"And you mistook mercy for weakness."

She opened the front door.

"Get out."

Greg looked at Sarah.

"Come on."

Sarah remained still.

"Sarah."

She looked at her mother.

"Can Lily stay?"

Carolyn's anger cracked.

Lily appeared behind David.

Sarah continued.

"Just tonight."

Carolyn looked at her granddaughter.

Then at Sarah.

"She can stay."

Sarah's eyes filled with tears.

"Thank you."

"Do not thank me."

Sarah nodded.

Greg grabbed her arm.

"We're leaving."

Sarah pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

Greg stared at her.

Something shifted.

Not redemption.

Not yet.

But the first fracture in their alliance.

Greg walked into the rain alone.

Sarah followed several feet behind.

At the door she turned.

"Mom."

Carolyn waited.

Sarah opened her mouth.

Nothing came.

She left.

Officer Cole remained another hour.

Statements were taken.

Documents were photographed.

The forged power of attorney was collected.

Dr. Voss would be interviewed.

Greg's company records would be subpoenaed.

Nothing would be resolved tonight.

Yet when the last vehicle disappeared, Carolyn stood in the foyer and felt something she had not felt in months.

The house belonged to her again.

David came beside her.

"I'm sorry I wasn't here."

Carolyn looked at him.

"Don't."

"I should have known."

"I lied to you."

He turned.

"I kept saying everything was fine."

"Why?"

"Because she is your sister."

David looked toward the dark driveway.

"That stopped being enough a long time ago."

Carolyn took his hand.

"She's still my daughter."

"I know."

"That is what makes this terrible."

David nodded.

Behind them, Lily stood on the stairs.

"Grandma?"

Carolyn turned.

Lily came down slowly.

She stopped several feet away.

"I need to tell you something."

Carolyn waited.

Lily started crying.

"I'm sorry I spit in your food."

Carolyn's eyes filled.

Lily continued.

"I'm sorry I laughed."

Carolyn swallowed.

"And I'm sorry I said you deserved it."

The girl looked down.

"You didn't."

Carolyn walked toward her.

Lily did not ask for a hug.

She only stood there.

Carolyn rested one hand on her shoulder.

"Thank you for telling the truth."

Lily looked up.

"Do you hate me?"

"No."

"Are you still mad?"

"Yes."

Lily nodded.

Carolyn almost smiled.

"But anger can heal when people change."

"Can I change?"

Carolyn looked toward David.

Then back at Lily.

"That will be your decision every day."

Lily hugged her.

Carolyn held her granddaughter tightly.

Over the child's shoulder, David saw something on the dining table.

Sarah's phone.

She had left it behind.

The screen lit up.

A message appeared.

Greg: Don't say anything about the storage unit.

David slowly picked up the phone.

"Mom."

Carolyn looked at him.

"What?"

May you like

David turned the screen toward her.

"The night isn't over."
