Chapter 14 - The Room Beneath the House

They found Carla strapped to a medical chair.

A woman stood behind her.

Eleanor Vale looked nothing like the monster Austin expected.

Seventy-four.

Silver hair.

Elegant charcoal coat.

Steady hands.

A pistol rested against Carla’s shoulder.

“You came quickly.”

Austin stopped.

Police spread along the corridor.

Eleanor smiled.

“Too many weapons near a pregnant woman.”

Irene stepped into view.

Austin cursed under his breath.

Eleanor’s eyes lit up.

“Evelyn’s face.”

Irene’s disgust was immediate.

“Don’t talk about her like you loved her.”

“I did love her.”

“You turned her children into experiments.”

“I protected her legacy.”

“By killing people?”

“Legacy has always required pruning.”

Austin raised his weapon.

“Release Carla.”

Eleanor pressed the pistol harder against her.

“Drop it.”

Austin obeyed.

Grant did too.

Quinn reluctantly lowered hers.

Eleanor nodded toward Irene.

“The succession waiver.”

“I don’t have one.”

“Crowe does.”

“Crowe is missing.”

“No.”

A door opened behind Eleanor.

Nathaniel Crowe entered.

Carla began crying harder.

“You bastard.”

Crowe looked ashamed.

“I’m sorry.”

Austin stared.

“You’re working with her.”

Crowe said nothing.

Eleanor smiled.

“He always has.”

Irene looked at Crowe.

“Everything you told us?”

“Some was true.”

“Which part?”

“Enough.”

Eleanor held out a document.

“Sign.”

Irene did not move.

“What happens if I do?”

“The trust enters emergency stewardship.”

“Charles controls it.”

Eleanor laughed.

“Charles believes he does.”

Austin looked at his father.

Charles had entered behind Quinn.

Eleanor’s smile widened.

“Hello, Charles.”

“Eleanor.”

“You aged badly.”

“You died badly.”

“So I heard.”

Irene looked between them.

“What happens after emergency stewardship?”

Eleanor answered.

“The fifth trustee clause activates.”

Margaret whispered, “No.”

Charles’s face hardened.

Austin understood.

“Eleanor gets control.”

“Yes.”

Irene laughed softly.

“That’s your grand plan?”

“My plan began before you were born.”

“And it ends because I sign a piece of paper?”

“Yes.”

Irene looked at Carla.

Then at Austin.

Then at Eleanor.

“No.”

Eleanor’s smile vanished.

“I will shoot her.”

“No, you won’t.”

“Try me.”

Irene stepped closer.

“You kept Carla alive because you need leverage. If you kill her, you lose it.”

“I can hurt her without killing her.”

Carla trembled.

Irene’s hand rested over her stomach.

“And then I still don’t sign.”

Eleanor narrowed her eyes.

“You sound like Evelyn.”

“Good.”

Crowe shifted.

Austin noticed.

His right hand moved toward his jacket.

Eleanor saw it too.

“Don’t.”

Crowe froze.

She looked at him.

“You disappoint me.”

Crowe’s face changed.

“I’m done.”

Eleanor laughed.

“You were born for this.”

“I was manufactured for this.”

“Yes.”

“I’m done being H-24.”

Eleanor raised the pistol toward him.

Carla screamed.

Crowe lunged.

The gun fired.

Austin tackled Irene to the floor.

Police surged forward.

A second shot.

Then a third.

When Austin looked up, Eleanor lay against the wall.

Blood spread beneath her.

Crowe was on the floor holding his shoulder.

Carla remained alive.

Quinn kicked the weapon away.

Charles moved toward Eleanor.

She laughed through bloody lips.

“You still think this ends with me.”

Charles crouched.

“Where is the second claim?”

Eleanor smiled.

“Already born.”

Everyone froze.

Irene stared.

“The registry says unborn.”

“It says viable descendant.”

“You falsified the pregnancy.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Eleanor coughed.

“Pregnancy can be maintained outside the body.”

Austin looked at the medical rooms around them.

A terrible possibility formed.

Artificial gestation.

Experimental systems.

Harrow laboratories.

Eleanor’s smile widened.

“You never wondered why Bellwether bought neonatal research companies?”

Charles went pale.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Irene’s voice shook.

“What did you do?”

Eleanor whispered, “I preserved Evelyn’s line.”

“Where?”

Eleanor looked toward a steel door at the end of the chamber.

Austin moved first.

Behind it was a laboratory.

New equipment inside an old underground facility.

Power units hummed.

Three transparent gestational chambers stood in the center.

Two were empty.

The third was active.

Inside, suspended in artificial fluid, was a developing fetus.

Irene stared in horror.

A display beside it read:

H-25.

GESTATIONAL AGE: 21 WEEKS.

SUCCESSION STATUS: ACTIVE.

Austin looked at Charles.

“Whose child is that?”

Charles had no answer.

Then the genetic profile appeared on the monitor.

MATERNAL LINE: EVELYN ROSE HARROW.

PATERNAL LINE: AUSTIN DANIEL WENTWORTH.

Irene turned slowly toward her husband.

Austin went white.

“I never…”

He could not finish.

May you like

Eleanor laughed from the doorway.

“You didn’t need to.”
