Chapter 8 - The Manager’s Debt
When David confronted Julian, the restaurant manager denied everything.
“I was nineteen years old,” he said. “I worked as a hospital orderly. That bracelet could have been anywhere.”
“It was found inside Elena Lancaster’s car,” David replied.
Julian’s face went pale.
Emily stood across from him in the empty restaurant.
The same marble floor where he had ordered her to kneel stretched between them.
“Tell me the truth,” she said.
Julian looked toward the security cameras.
David placed a document on the table.
“It is a federal immunity agreement. It protects you from certain charges if you provide complete testimony and evidence.”
Julian stared at the paper.
“What happens if I refuse?”
David’s voice remained calm.
“Conrad Hawthorne will blame everything on you.”
Julian closed his eyes.
For years, Conrad had paid him to report any person asking questions about Elena Lancaster.
Julian had accepted because he owed gambling debts and believed the matter belonged to the past.
But twenty-two years earlier, his involvement had been worse.
Conrad hired him to enter the hospital records office and alter Elena’s medical files. Julian was also instructed to give a mechanic access to her car.
“I didn’t know he intended to cause a crash,” Julian said.
“But you knew afterward,” Emily replied.
Julian nodded.
After Elena survived, Conrad ordered Julian to watch Rose’s apartment.
Julian saw Elena return.
He called Conrad.
“That call led them to her,” Emily said.
“I was afraid.”
“So was my mother.”
Julian lowered his head.
Emily wanted to hate him.
Part of her did.
Yet she also saw what Julian had become: a man who had surrendered one moral choice at a time until cruelty felt normal.
“Why did you order me to kneel?” she asked.
Julian struggled to answer.
“Because Victoria told me to.”
“That isn’t a reason.”
“No.”
“Then why?”
His eyes filled with shame.
“Because I had spent so long protecting powerful people that I forgot anyone else deserved protection.”
Julian signed the agreement.
He then opened a hidden safe inside his office.
For years, he had secretly recorded conversations with the Hawthorne family as protection against betrayal.
One recording captured Conrad discussing Elena.
“She should have died on the coast,” Conrad said. “When she survived, we had to move her.”
Another voice asked where Elena had been taken.
Conrad answered with the name of a private medical facility outside the city.
The facility had closed fifteen years earlier.
Its patient files were transferred to a county archive.
David obtained a court order to search them.
They found a record for a woman admitted under the false name Eleanor Lane.
She had suffered memory loss after an injury and remained at the facility for nearly seven years.
After it closed, she had been moved to a long-term care home in Northern California.
The patient was still alive.
Emily looked at the photograph attached to the file.
