Chapter 1: The Perfect Life That Wasn’t Perfect

Before that night, Emma’s life looked perfect.
She lived in a beautiful apartment in Charlottenburg, Berlin. She owned a small art gallery that had slowly become respected among collectors. Her husband, Daniel Keller, was successful, charming, and admired by almost everyone who met him.
People often told Emma she was lucky.
But luck had always sounded strange to her.
Because Emma had grown up with an empty chair at the family table.
Her younger sister, Lena, disappeared when Emma was nine. Lena was only four. Their family had visited a Christmas market in Munich, a place filled with lights, music, wooden toys, and the smell of roasted almonds.
Emma remembered holding Lena’s hand.
Then she remembered letting go.
Only for a moment.
When she turned back, Lena was gone.
The police searched. Her parents appeared on television. Flyers were placed at stations, shops, schools, and churches. Strangers called with false hopes. Some claimed to have seen Lena. Some only wanted attention.
Years passed.
Lena never came home.
Emma’s father died years later still believing his youngest daughter might walk through the door one day. Emma’s mother, Ingrid, survived, but she never truly recovered. Every year on Lena’s birthday, Ingrid baked a small cake and placed it beside the ruby locket’s empty velvet box.
Emma carried guilt like a second heartbeat.
She had been the older sister.
She should have held Lena’s hand tighter.
Daniel had known this story from the beginning of their relationship. When Emma first told him, he held her hand and said grief was not weakness. He said he admired her strength. He said one day, perhaps, peace would find her family.
Emma believed him.
That was why his recent behavior hurt so much.
Daniel had started coming home late. He guarded his phone. He smelled of perfume Emma did not own. When she asked questions, he smiled and called her tired. When she asked again, he called her insecure.
Then one evening, Daniel said he had a private business meeting outside Berlin.
But his assistant accidentally told Emma he had taken the afternoon off.
Emma followed the address connected to a card charge she did not recognize.
It led her to an apartment in Berlin-Mitte.
Apartment 4B.
She heard Daniel laughing inside.

Then she opened the door.
And found a woman wearing Lena’s necklace.
