Chapter 15 - The Baby in Room 217

Claire was moved to a secure detention unit before Daniel could confront her.
Her attorney refused all requests for another interview.
Dr. Wells also stopped cooperating. During a transfer between facilities, he suffered a medical emergency and was returned to St. Catherine’s under guard.
Detective Ruiz warned Daniel and Emily not to visit either suspect.
They ignored her warning only once.
Daniel needed to understand the final line of his father’s letter.
Noah is not the first child Claire tried to place under the Hart trust.
The trust records contained no other child beneficiaries. Claire had never married and claimed she had no children.
Yet hidden financial statements revealed monthly transfers to a private pediatric care facility called Bellhaven House.
The payments began seven years earlier.
Each transfer was labeled L.H.
Daniel believed the initials stood for Lydia Hart.
Emily was not convinced.
“Lydia would not be in pediatric care,” she said.
“Her daughter might.”
They gave the records to Detective Ruiz.
Bellhaven House had closed eighteen months earlier. Its patients had been transferred to several hospitals, but the documents did not identify which child had been supported by the Hart trust.
One afternoon, Nurse Lena called Emily.
Her voice was uneasy.
“I found something in the old admissions system.”
“What?”
“A patient linked to Bellhaven House was transferred to St. Catherine’s last year. The payment code matches the one in your documents.”
“Who is the patient?”
“The name is restricted.”
“Why are you calling me?”
“Because Dr. Wells accessed the patient’s record three hours before Noah was admitted.”
Emily stood.
“Is the patient still at St. Catherine’s?”
“Yes.”
“What room?”
“I could lose my job.”
“A baby was nearly harmed because people kept protecting records.”
Lena became quiet.
“Room 217.”
Daniel was working a daytime shift, but Emily called him and told him what she had learned. He left the station immediately.
Detective Ruiz met them at the hospital entrance.
“You will not enter the room without authorization,” she said.
“Then get authorization,” Daniel replied.
They took the elevator to the second floor.
Room 217 was located in a quiet pediatric recovery wing. A uniformed security officer stood outside.
Ruiz showed her badge and spoke to him.
The officer checked his list.
“No patient is assigned to this room.”
“Then why are you guarding it?”
“I was instructed to remain here.”
“By whom?”
The officer looked at the paperwork.
“Hospital administration.”
Ruiz called the administrator listed on the form.
The number had been disconnected.
Daniel looked through the narrow window in the door.
A crib stood inside.
A small child slept beneath a blue blanket.
Someone sat in the chair beside the crib.
A woman with silver-streaked dark hair.
She turned slowly toward the window.
Daniel stepped back.
“What is it?” Emily asked.
“I know her.”
The woman stood and approached the door.
Ruiz instructed the security officer to unlock it.
He inserted his keycard.
The light remained red.
Inside the room, the woman placed one hand against the glass.
A thin scar ran across her palm.
Daniel remembered the same scar in a photograph from his father’s files.
“Lydia,” he whispered.
The woman shook her head.
Then she pointed toward the child in the crib.
The baby looked no older than one year.
A hospital bracelet circled the child’s wrist.
Emily moved closer to the glass.
The printed name was visible.
Noah Hart.
Emily looked down at her own son, sleeping safely in Daniel’s arms.
“There are two bracelets with Noah’s name.”
The woman inside Room 217 held a folded piece of paper against the window.
Three words were written across it.
Claire switched the babies.
Daniel struck the door with his palm.
“Open it.”
The security officer tried his card again.
Every light in the corridor shut off.
Red emergency illumination appeared along the floor.
The elevator doors opened behind them.
Dr. Wells stepped into the corridor wearing hospital clothing and no restraints.
Bloodless fear crossed his face when he saw the woman inside Room 217.
“You found the wrong child,” he said.
Detective Ruiz drew her weapon.
“Get on the floor.”
Wells did not move.
He looked directly at Emily.
“The baby you took home six months ago is yours,” he said. “But the name Noah Hart was assigned before he was born.”
Daniel held Noah closer.
“What does that mean?”
Wells smiled faintly.
“It means Claire was never trying to steal his inheritance.”
The locked door of Room 217 clicked.
The woman inside stepped back from the glass.
“She was trying to hide who would inherit after him,” Wells continued.
The door began opening.
Before anyone could enter, an alarm sounded from inside the crib.
The woman rushed toward the child.
Daniel moved forward.
Then his phone vibrated.
A live video appeared on the screen.
It showed the nursery in the house they had abandoned.
Someone was standing beside Noah’s empty crib.
The figure wore Vivian’s gray coat.
A distorted voice spoke through the phone.
“Bring Daniel’s son to the old house before midnight, or the truth about both babies disappears forever.”
The video shifted toward the nursery wall.
A section of pale green wallpaper had been removed.
Behind it was a metal door Daniel and Emily had never known existed.
The door opened.
Rows of labeled medical files filled the hidden space.
The camera moved closer to the first file.
Emily saw her own name.
Beneath it was a date recorded eight months before Noah’s birth.
The final line read:
Embryo transfer authorized by Claire Hart.
The video ended.
Daniel looked at Emily.
Emily looked at the baby in his arms.
Inside Room 217, the second child began to cry.

And from somewhere within the dark hospital corridor, Vivian’s voice whispered:
“Now you understand why Noah was chosen.”
