Chapter 4 - A Signature From the Past

Ethan spent the next morning inside a private conference room with Julian and a forensic document examiner named Dr. Lena Park.
On the wall, two signatures appeared side by side.
The first came from Maya’s original corporate registration.
The second appeared on the recent Northbridge reactivation request.
“The similarities are strong,” Lena said. “Line pressure, spacing, terminal strokes. Whoever produced the second signature had access to high-quality samples.”
“Is it forged?” Ethan asked.
“Yes.”
Lena enlarged the final letters.
“The writer copied the form but not the natural movement. It was drawn slowly.”
Julian looked at Ethan. “Bradley had access to Claire’s identification. Did he ever have access to Maya’s documents?”
“Not directly.”
“Could Claire?”
Ethan’s expression hardened.
“No.”
Julian leaned back. “Someone connected the Holloway property fraud to a company belonging to your late wife. That is too specific to be random.”
Ethan agreed.
Maya’s old legal files were stored in a secured archive at Vale Meridian. Some were also kept in a locked cabinet at Ethan’s home.
Only three people had regular access to the house.
Ethan.
Claire.
And Mrs. Alvarez, the housekeeper who had cared for Noah and Sophie since Maya’s death.
Ethan refused to suspect any of them.
He asked the security team to review the house alarm logs.
Two unusual entries appeared.
Both occurred while Ethan and the children were visiting Claire’s parents.
On each occasion, the alarm had been disarmed using Claire’s temporary access code.
The first entry lasted thirty-eight minutes.
The second lasted fifty-two.
Claire said she had not gone to the house on either date.
“Who knows your code?” Ethan asked.
“No one.”
“Did you ever send it to someone?”
Claire thought for a moment.
Then her face changed.
“Bradley borrowed my car when his was being repaired. My phone was connected to the dashboard. I may have texted the code to myself.”
Ethan’s silence told her everything.
“You think he entered your house?”
“I think we need to confirm it.”
Claire stood from the sofa.
“This is what you always do.”
“What?”
“You turn people into suspects.”
“There are forged signatures, Claire.”
“So show me everything.”
“I can’t yet.”
“Why?”
“Because your brother may not be working alone.”
Her expression sharpened.
“You keep saying that, but you never tell me who else you suspect.”
“I don’t know.”
“Do you suspect me?”
Ethan stared at her.
The question hurt more than he expected.
“No.”
“But you investigated my access code.”
“I investigated a break-in.”
“You investigated me.”
Claire walked toward the door.
Ethan stopped himself from following.
He had learned during twelve years in financial risk that facts became harder to find when emotion entered the room. But Claire was not a case file. She was the woman he planned to marry.
Treating her like part of an investigation was destroying the trust he claimed to protect.
Before she left, Ethan finally said, “Northbridge Administrative Group was Maya’s company.”
Claire turned.
“Your wife’s?”
“Someone reactivated it using her forged signature.”
The anger left Claire’s face.
“Why would Bradley know about that company?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you ever mention it?”
“Never.”
Claire slowly returned to the sofa.
Ethan showed her the account records, the forged ownership transfer, and the Grayhaven redevelopment proposal.
By the time she reached the final page, her hands were trembling.
“My brother planned to demolish my parents’ home?”
“He planned to use the loan money first. The redevelopment was how he justified the value.”
“Does Dad know?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Then we tell him tonight.”
“We can’t.”
Claire looked up.
“If Bradley thinks the loan is still moving forward, he may lead us to whoever prepared the documents. The transfer is not enough. He can claim he relied on someone else.”
“He forged my name.”
“We need proof connecting him to the creation of the documents, not just his signature on the final agreement.”
Claire stood again, but this time she did not leave.
“What do you need me to do?”
Ethan did not answer immediately.
He hated what he was about to ask.
“Bradley trusts you more than he trusts anyone else.”
“No.”
“You haven’t heard the plan.”
“I don’t need to. You want me to pretend I believe him.”
“I want you to ask about the company.”
“And record him?”
“Only if he admits something.”
Claire walked to the window.
Outside, Noah was helping Sophie build a cardboard castle in the living room.
Claire watched them through the glass.
“Your children already think I’m leaving,” she said.
“They don’t.”
“Sophie asked whether she should stop calling my mother Grandma Helen.”
Ethan looked toward his daughter.
Claire wiped her eyes before turning back.
“I’ll talk to Bradley once. After that, no more secrets.”
Ethan nodded.
“After that, we tell your parents everything.”
Claire called Bradley the following evening.
She told him Ethan had admitted that his company could eventually claim the house.
Bradley sounded pleased.
“I warned you.”
Claire forced her voice to remain uncertain. “What am I supposed to do?”
“Convince Dad to cooperate with me.”
“With Holloway Renewal?”
There was a pause.
“How do you know that name?”
“I found a paper in Ethan’s office.”
Bradley’s breathing changed.
“What else did you find?”
“A transfer document.”
“Claire, listen carefully. Ethan is trying to scare you.”
“My signature is on it.”
“It’s only a preliminary copy.”
“I didn’t sign it.”
Bradley lowered his voice.
“You agreed to help the family.”
“That is not an answer.”
Another pause.
Then Bradley said, “Sometimes paperwork has to move faster than people.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Ethan sat across the room, listening through a secured speaker.
“Who prepared it?” Claire asked.
“A specialist.”
“What specialist?”
“Someone who knows Ethan’s systems.”
Ethan leaned forward.
Claire pressed him. “What does that mean?”
“It means your fiancé is not as protected as he thinks.”
“Who is helping you?”
Bradley laughed softly.
“You’ll meet her at the reunion.”
The call ended.
Claire stared at the phone.
Ethan replayed the final sentence.
Her.
Not him.

A woman was helping Bradley.
And she intended to be in the Holloways’ backyard.
