Chapter 8 - Two Slaps Beneath the Chandeliers

The ballroom glowed that evening.

Crystal chandeliers reflected across the polished marble floors. White roses climbed the columns. A string quartet played near the stage while waiters carried champagne between elegantly dressed guests.

Claire entered beside Ryan.

Conversation softened as people turned toward them.

She wore the white gown Darlene had chosen, but for the first time, Claire did not feel like a doll arranged for someone else’s approval.

Ryan leaned close.

“We can leave at any moment.”

“I know.”

Darlene approached before they reached the center of the room.

Her smile was flawless.

“You’re late.”

“It’s five minutes past six.”

“The family photographs began at five thirty.”

“You changed the schedule without telling me.”

Darlene’s smile tightened.

“Come with me.”

She gripped Claire’s arm and guided her toward a quieter space near the floral arch.

Ryan followed at a distance.

Several guests continued chatting nearby, including a blonde woman named Vanessa who worked with Ryan and was filming the decorations on her phone.

Darlene leaned in.

“Transfer the sixty thousand by Monday. Your sister needs it.”

Claire pulled her arm free.

“Dad left that money to me. Mia is not getting a cent.”

Mia stood several feet away in a pale silver gown. Her eyes widened.

Darlene glanced around.

“Lower your voice.”

“I’m speaking normally.”

“Do not create a scene.”

“I said no.”

Darlene’s face changed.

The elegant hostess disappeared.

Her hand struck Claire’s cheek.

The sound cut through the music.

The quartet stopped.

Ryan stepped forward.

“Darlene.”

Claire raised her hand.

“Don’t.”

Ryan froze, though every muscle in his body remained tense.

Darlene’s eyes darted across the room.

Guests stared openly now.

Vanessa’s phone remained raised.

Darlene spoke through clenched teeth.

“Don’t embarrass me tonight.”

Claire faced her.

“You embarrassed yourself.”

The second slap came without warning.

Claire’s head turned, but she did not stumble.

The ballroom went completely silent.

Mia whispered, “Mom.”

Darlene looked almost frightened by what she had done, but pride quickly hardened her expression.

Claire slowly touched her cheek.

Then she smiled.

“No,” she said. “I’m done.”

“You ungrateful girl,” Darlene whispered.

“Now it’s your turn to lose everything. You should have checked what I changed this morning.”

At exactly eight twenty-five, phones began ringing.

Darlene pulled hers from her handbag.

She read the first notification.

Her lips parted.

NOTICE OF TRUSTEE REMOVAL.

The second message arrived.

SUSPENSION OF DISTRIBUTIONS PENDING FORENSIC AUDIT.

Then came an email from Bennett Hospitality.

TERMINATION OF ACTING CHAIR AUTHORITY.

Mia looked down at her own phone.

“Mom, the townhouse title is being challenged.”

Darlene’s attorney pushed through the guests.

“What have you done?” Darlene demanded.

Claire’s voice remained calm.

“I accepted the position Dad left me.”

“You have no authority.”

Eleanor Shaw stepped from the crowd.

“Yes, she does.”

Darlene stared at her.

“You.”

Eleanor held a leather folder against her side.

“Thomas appointed Claire as majority voting shareholder and trust protector. Your temporary authority expired eight months ago.”

“That is not true.”

“You were notified through counsel twenty minutes ago.”

Darlene turned toward the guests as if searching for support.

“Claire is confused. She has always been emotional.”

Vanessa lowered her phone.

“I recorded both slaps.”

Darlene’s face went pale.

Claire continued.

“The company accounts are under independent review. The transfers to DB Strategic have been frozen. Your access to all corporate property has been revoked.”

“You cannot take my home.”

“The house belongs to Dad’s trust.”

“He left it to me.”

“He gave you a conditional right to live there.”

Darlene stepped closer.

“I am your mother.”

“Yes.”

The word carried no fear.

Darlene’s voice broke into a hiss.

“After everything I did for you.”

Claire looked around the ballroom Darlene had purchased with stolen company funds.

“You taught me that love was something I had to earn by obeying you. Dad taught me something different.”

Mia began crying.

“What happens to me?”

Claire turned toward her sister.

“You return the townhouse and the car. You cooperate with the audit. Then we see what remains.”

“You’re ruining my life.”

“No. I’m refusing to finance the way you ruined it.”

Darlene raised her hand again.

This time Ryan stepped between them.

“Do not touch her.”

Hotel security arrived moments later.

Claire did not ask them to arrest her mother. She simply asked them to escort Darlene from the ballroom.

As Darlene was led toward the doors, she looked over her shoulder.

“You will regret this.”

May you like

Claire met her gaze.

“No,” she said. “I regret waiting this long.”
