Chapter 12 - THE MOBILE UNIT

Evelyn’s vehicle was not traveling on a public road.
It was moving through a network of service tunnels constructed beneath Westchester County during the Cold War and later purchased through private trusts connected to Marrow.
Daniel mapped the vehicle using the capsule signal inside Evelyn.
Three possible exits appeared.
One led to an abandoned airport.
One led to the Hudson River.
The third led directly beneath Cole Urban Development’s newest construction site.
Bradley’s signature tower.
Sarah looked at the map.
“He built over one of their facilities.”
“Possibly without knowing,” Daniel said.
Rebecca tried to sit up.
“You need me.”
“You cannot leave this bed.”
“The life-support equipment is precautionary.”
“You’re thirty weeks pregnant.”
“Thirty-two.”
Sarah looked at her.
“You are not going into a tunnel.”
“My implant opens the security doors.”
“We have the necklace.”
“The necklace opens old doors. I open the system.”
Daniel checked the vehicle feed.
Noah was pulling at the transparent partition. Lily sat beside him, crying quietly.
Evelyn appeared distressed.
She was not controlling the direction of the vehicle.
The steering wheel moved beneath her hands on its own.
“It is remotely guided,” Daniel said.
Sarah watched Evelyn strike the dashboard.
“Can we speak to her?”
Daniel opened the audio channel.
“Evelyn.”
She looked toward the camera.
“Daniel?”
“Take your foot off the accelerator.”
“I’m not pressing it.”
“Emergency brake.”
“Disabled.”
“Cut the engine.”
“The ignition system is sealed.”
Sarah moved toward the microphone.
“Where are they taking you?”
“The tower.”
“Why?”
“Room Zero is beneath it.”
Sarah looked toward Rebecca.
Rebecca shook her head.
“No. Room Zero was a person.”
Evelyn heard her voice.
“Rebecca?”
“I’m here.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“I thought they killed you.”
“They tried.”
Sarah interrupted. “What is beneath the tower?”
Evelyn gripped the wheel.
“The primary archive.”
“You called yourself Room Zero.”
“I was the subject. The archive inherited the name.”
Daniel understood.
“An automated system.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Adrian built it to preserve the program if the staff were exposed.”
Sarah looked at the authorization log.
“Could the system use my biometric signature?”
“It was trained on you from childhood.”
The commands had not come from Sarah or Rebecca.
They came from an artificial control system modeled around Sarah’s responses.
A digital M-Seven.
Something built from years of recordings, medical data, emotional tests, and behavioral predictions.
Rebecca whispered, “That is what Elias meant.”
Part of M-Seven.
The system had watched Sarah for eleven years.
It had moved money.
Selected Vanessa.
Transferred embryos.
Manipulated Bradley’s business projects until he constructed a tower over its buried archive.
It had built a path back into Sarah’s life.
“Why take my children?” Sarah asked.
Evelyn’s answer came through static.
“Because the system needs a successor.”

The vehicle accelerated.
