Chapter 12 - THE MAN WHO WANTED EVERYTHING

Charles Whitmore had disappeared from the family's history decades earlier.

Diane claimed he had betrayed their father.

Jonathan claimed he had manipulated the company.

Ryan claimed he had never even met him.

But the records told a different story.

Charles had remained connected to the company through intermediaries.

He had influenced investments.

Acquired properties.

Created debts.

And waited.

Emily studied everything.

“Why didn't Dad go to the police?”

Jonathan answered.

“Because he believed he could handle it.”

“And Mom?”

“She believed silence would protect you.”

Emily looked at Diane.

“You could have told me.”

“I was afraid.”

“You made me believe Dad abandoned us.”

“I thought if you hated him, you'd stop looking.”

Emily shook her head.

“You lied to me for twenty years.”

Diane cried.

“I know.”

Emily turned away.

She wasn't ready to forgive her.

But she finally understood that the Mother's Day explosion had been built on decades of fear, manipulation, and secrets.

Still, one question remained.

“Where is Charles now?”

Jonathan didn't answer.

Emily looked at him.

“Where?”

Jonathan placed another file on the table.

A recent photograph.

Charles Whitmore standing outside a financial office.

The date was three weeks earlier.

Emily stared.

“He's been watching.”

Jonathan nodded.

Then Emily noticed something.

A second photograph.

Her.

Leaving her office.

Taken two weeks earlier.

Another.

Daniel.

Leaving their home.

Another.

Emily's mother.

Standing outside the restaurant.

Emily's blood ran cold.

“How long?”

Jonathan looked at her.

“Long enough.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“What's his goal?”

Jonathan answered,

“The trust.”

Emily frowned.

“I thought the money was gone.”

“Most of it is.”

“Then why does he want it?”

Jonathan looked at her.

“Because the money isn't the most valuable thing your father left you.”

Emily waited.

“What is?”

Jonathan opened the final page.

A handwritten note from her father.

At the bottom were seven words.

The truth is worth more than every dollar.

Emily looked at Daniel.

“What truth?”

Jonathan folded the document.

“That is what Charles is afraid you'll discover.”
