THE MOMENT THE SUV DIED / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - THE ROAD ABOVE THE SEA

Storage room seventeen was located beneath the oldest Mercer terminal, a concrete structure abandoned after a fire twenty years earlier.

Claire refused to remain behind while Adrian searched it.

Jonathan objected. Rebecca objected. Arthur threatened to obtain a medical order if she continued placing herself under stress.

Claire listened to all of them.

Then she went anyway.

She wore a tracking device beneath her coat and traveled with Adrian, two investigators and a medical professional. No one entered the terminal until a security team had searched every level.

The silver key opened a rusted door below the loading platform.

Inside were wooden crates, metal shelves and an old projector.

A single film reel sat on a table.

Adrian inspected it before placing it into the projector.

The image that appeared on the wall had been recorded aboard a ship.

The date was twenty-six years earlier.

A younger Jonathan Mercer stood in a cargo hold with Claire’s grandfather and three unidentified men. Behind them were sealed containers marked as agricultural equipment.

The next section of the film showed one container open.

Inside were rows of metal cases.

The image was blurred, but a symbol had been painted across each case: a circle divided by three vertical lines.

Claire had seen the symbol before.

It appeared on the private banking order that concealed the Daniel Mercer Recovery Foundation account.

Jonathan watched the film without speaking.

“You knew about the Aurora,” Claire said.

“I knew it existed.”

“What was in those cases?”

“I was never told.”

“You were standing beside them.”

“My father ordered me to witness the transfer. He said the cargo belonged to a government partner and must never appear in company records.”

“Did you believe him?”

“I was thirty-eight and preparing to take control of the company. I believed what was convenient.”

The film changed.

Evelyn appeared on the screen.

She was younger, pregnant with Rebecca and furious.

“The transfer violates every agreement,” she said to someone behind the camera. “If this leaves the country, we all become responsible.”

Claire looked at her father.

“Mom knew too.”

“Yes.”

The next portion had no sound.

It showed a man entering the cargo hold and speaking to Evelyn. He was tall, with dark hair and a distinct scar near his jaw.

Claire paused the film.

The man resembled Derek.

Not exactly. He was older and broader.

“Who is that?” Adrian asked.

Jonathan moved closer to the wall.

“Victor Crowe.”

“Derek’s father?” Claire said.

Jonathan nodded slowly.

“Victor worked as a private intelligence contractor. My father hired him to oversee the cargo.”

The film ended with Evelyn taking one of the metal cases.

She carried it out of view.

Adrian searched the remaining crates.

Most contained shipping documents, photographs and damaged equipment. One held a handwritten ledger.

The ledger recorded payments to Victor Crowe for twenty-seven years.

The final payment had been made to Derek six months before he met Claire.

Jonathan sat heavily on a crate.

“Your mother hired him.”

Claire turned toward him.

“Why?”

“Victor died years ago. She must have believed Derek inherited his information.”

“Information about what?”

Jonathan looked at the blank wall where the film had played.

“The object Evelyn removed from the Aurora.”

The investigators photographed every item before leaving.

As Claire climbed the terminal stairs, her phone received a message from Derek.

COME HOME.

She ignored it.

A second message arrived.

YOUR MOTHER WILL TELL YOU THE TRUTH.

Then a photograph appeared.

Evelyn sat in Claire’s former dining room. A newspaper on the table confirmed the picture had been taken that morning.

Derek was inviting Claire back to the house.

“It is a trap,” Adrian said.

“Yes.”

“You are not going.”

“No.”

Claire looked at the photograph.

“I’m going somewhere he won’t expect.”

An hour later, she instructed the driver to take the coastal road toward the coordinates from her mother’s note.

Adrian followed in a second vehicle. The security team stayed several minutes behind to avoid being detected.

Claire chose the black SUV.

Derek had left it at the airport hotel after learning that Mercer security could track it. Investigators searched it before returning it to Claire.

She believed using the SUV would send a message.

She was no longer afraid of objects he had controlled.

Halfway to the coordinates, Rebecca called.

“Where are you?”

“On the coastal road.”

“You said you weren’t going.”

“I said I wasn’t going home.”

“Claire, Derek left the house twenty minutes ago.”

“In what vehicle?”

“A rented sedan. Adrian’s team lost him near the highway entrance.”

Claire glanced at the mirror.

No sedan was visible.

“Where is Dad?”

“With Arthur.”

“Are you sure?”

Rebecca became quiet.

“What are you asking?”

“The security system was breached with your account.”

“I told you that wasn’t me.”

“I believe you.”

It was almost true.

“But someone had your code,” Claire continued. “Who?”

“No one.”

“Think.”

Rebecca breathed slowly.

“Mom.”

Claire tightened her grip on the wheel.

“When?”

“Before she moved to Switzerland. She said she needed emergency access in case Dad removed her from the family systems.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“I forgot. It was years ago.”

Claire saw a vehicle approaching rapidly behind her.

A dark sedan.

“Rebecca, call Adrian.”

“Why?”

“Tell him Derek found me.”

The sedan accelerated.

Claire pressed the SUV’s emergency control, activating location sharing and audio recording.

Derek’s vehicle moved alongside her.

He lowered the passenger window.

“Pull over!”

Claire kept her eyes on the road.

Derek moved ahead and entered her lane.

She slowed to avoid him.

He did it again.

The road narrowed near the cliffside section. Claire could not risk a collision, especially with the baby.

She pulled onto a wide gravel shoulder beside an emergency call box.

Derek stopped in front of her.

He came to the driver’s side and opened her door.

“What are you doing?” he demanded.

“You asked me to stop.”

“You were going to the coordinates.”

“Yes.”

“Your mother told you not to trust your family.”

“My mother has lied to me for years.”

“She lied to protect you.”

“From what?”

Derek looked toward the road behind them.

“Get into my car.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“No.”

His voice changed.

“You don’t understand how little time we have.”

“Then explain it.”

He reached for her phone.

Claire moved away and lost her balance stepping onto the gravel. She fell onto one knee and sat back against the soft roadside edge.

Derek froze.

For one moment, concern appeared genuine.

“Are you hurt?”

Claire felt her belly.

The baby moved.

“No.”

He exhaled.

Then his attention returned to the phone.

“Give it to me.”

Claire pressed the emergency upload button.

Derek saw the screen.

His face hardened.

“You are recording me.”

“Yes.”

He glanced again toward the empty highway.

“You have made this impossible.”

“What did you plan to do?”

“I planned to save this family.”

“By taking control of my child’s inheritance?”

“You think this is about money.”

“You told doctors to declare me incapable.”

“Because you would never sign willingly.”

“Sign what?”

Derek crouched several feet from her.

“The transfer authorization.”

“What transfer?”

“The trust contains something your father never disclosed. Something Evelyn removed from the Aurora and hid inside the family structure.”

“What is it?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire almost laughed.

“You ruined my life for something you cannot identify?”

“My father died because of it.”

“And my brother?”

Derek’s eyes shifted.

“What happened to Daniel?”

“I was not involved.”

“That was not my question.”

Derek stood.

“We are leaving.”

“I’m not going with you.”

“You cannot stay here.”

“Then call for help.”

He looked down the highway.

“No one is coming.”

The words exposed him.

He had chosen this isolated place because he believed she would have no witness and no escape.

Derek walked toward the SUV.

“Stay here until you learn to obey.”

Claire watched him reach the open driver’s door.

“You’re leaving us here?”

He turned.

The charm was gone. The concerned husband had disappeared.

“Everything you own belongs to me now.”

Derek climbed into the SUV.

He did not realize Claire had retained the registered owner’s access.

She opened the security application.

“Not the car,” she said. “Not the money.”

She pressed the immobilization control.

The dashboard died.

A dark gray sedan appeared around the bend.

Derek stepped out of the SUV and demanded to know what she had done.

Claire looked at the approaching vehicle.

It was not Adrian’s.

She recognized his security vehicles. This sedan belonged to someone else.

It stopped safely behind her.

The driver stepped out and confirmed her location through a hidden communication device.

Then the rear door opened.

Mara Ellison emerged holding the leather folder.

Derek whispered her name like a curse.

Sirens sounded beyond the ridge.

Mara approached Claire and opened the folder.

“This marriage was never about your money,” she said.

May you like

Her gaze lowered to Claire’s belly.

“It was about your child.”
