Chapter 10 - The Priority Child

The photograph beneath Aria’s was Elias.

It showed him sleeping in the safe-house bassinet.

The image had been taken from inside the room.

Agents searched the house, vehicles, vents, electronics, and clothing. No hidden camera was found. The photograph had a shallow angle, as though captured from the bedside.

Emily remembered a home health aide who visited two days earlier to assess Aria’s incision. The agency confirmed sending no one.

The false aide had worn a mask and cap. She had spent eight minutes in the bedroom.

Security footage from the road showed a dark sedan leaving shortly afterward. Its plate belonged to a vehicle registered to Serena Brooks.

Serena was in federal custody at the time.

Someone else had access to her identity, her car, and her network.

Nora ordered Aria relocated again, but Aria resisted.

“Every time we move, they learn the new location,” she said. “The leak is inside the protection team or the hospital system.”

“Staying is not safe.”

“Moving is not safe either.”

Nora’s frustration cracked. “You have a newborn. This is not the time to prove a point.”

Aria looked at her sister. “I am not proving anything. I am recognizing a pattern. Hale wants us frightened and reactive. He controls the next move because we keep making the obvious one.”

Emily placed the photograph on the table.

“Then make a move he does not expect.”

They decided to announce publicly that Elias’s cord-blood sample had been destroyed. The actual sample would be placed in a federal biorepository under a new code. If Hale’s network believed the sample was gone, their response might expose what they needed it for.

The announcement came through the hospital, carefully worded as part of a review of unlawfully collected material.

Within six hours, the Vance Foundation received an encrypted email demanding ten million dollars for a backup specimen.

The sender included genetic data proving possession of a second Elias sample.

Aria remembered that the placenta had been removed during surgery. Multiple tissue sections could have been taken.

The email instructed Julian to deliver the money.

Nora suspected a trap but saw an opportunity. Julian agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration at sentencing. He wore a wire and carried a case containing marked currency to an underground parking garage.

Aria watched the operation from a secure command room.

Julian stood alone beneath fluorescent lights. He looked small in the vast concrete space. A phone rang inside the payment case.

He answered.

Hale’s voice came through distorted.

“You were given one purpose.”

Julian closed his eyes. “I did everything you asked.”

“You failed to control your wife.”

“She nearly died.”

“Survival was expected.”

Aria’s hands curled into fists.

Julian said, “Where is the sample?”

“You do not deserve to know.”

“I brought the money.”

“No. You brought federal agents.”

The garage lights went out.

Gunfire erupted.

The video feed became darkness and noise. Agents shouted. Tires screamed. When emergency lights returned, Julian lay behind a concrete barrier, blood spreading from his shoulder.

A motorcycle disappeared up the exit ramp.

Agents recovered the rider’s discarded helmet. Inside was a speaker, a remote trigger, and no rider identification. The motorcycle had driven itself through a modified control system until someone took manual control near the exit.

The meeting had been designed to test the federal response.

Yet Julian’s wire captured something Hale had not intended.

In the background of the call, beneath the distortion, a woman said, “Subject Nine is ready.”

Emily was Subject Nine.

At the safe house, Emily was gone.

Her coffee was still warm. The rear door stood open. There were no signs of struggle.

On her bed lay a note in her handwriting.

Do not follow me. I know where the daughters are.

Aria read it once and shook her head.

Emily would never leave without saying goodbye to Elias.

She turned the paper over.

Pressed into the back, almost invisible, were indentations from a message written on the sheet above it.

Aria shaded the surface with a pencil.

The hidden words appeared slowly:

He says my mother is alive.
