Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Where the Truth Came Out

Dominic arrived at the emergency meeting twenty minutes late.

Without the SUV, he had been forced to use a hired car. The driver refused to leave until Dominic paid because two of his cards had already been declined.

His morning had grown worse from there.

The apartment building had deactivated his access.

His corporate accounts were frozen.

Two investors had canceled private meetings.

His assistant informed him that Charles Brooks had requested every original financing document connected to the company.

Still, Dominic believed he could talk his way out of trouble.

He entered the boardroom and saw Audrey sitting beside her father.

For a moment, he looked relieved.

“There you are. Do you have any idea what your father has done?”

Audrey glanced at the bassinet beside her.

“Lower your voice.”

Dominic ignored her.

“The apartment locks were changed. The SUV was taken. My company cards aren’t working.”

Charles spoke calmly.

“The apartment and vehicle belong to Audrey’s trust. The company cards were suspended after evidence of unauthorized personal spending.”

Victoria pointed at Audrey.

“You’re letting your father humiliate your husband because of one misunderstanding?”

Audrey lifted the fifty-dollar bill Dominic had given her.

“Which part did I misunderstand?”

Dominic’s face reddened.

“I offered you transportation money.”

“You abandoned your recovering wife and five-day-old son.”

“You could have called a car.”

“I called my father instead.”

The directors shifted uncomfortably.

Most had known Audrey as Dominic’s quiet wife. Few understood why Charles Brooks had attended their earliest investment meetings or why Brooks Global had supported a company with limited experience.

Charles opened the evidence folder.

“We are here because Mr. Vance submitted fraudulent authorization to use my daughter’s shares as collateral.”

Dominic laughed too quickly.

“That is a lie.”

The attorney distributed copies.

“These signatures were examined this morning by two independent specialists. They were digitally copied from an older trust document.”

Dominic looked at the pages.

“I don’t know anything about this.”

Audrey placed the printed messages beside them.

“Your own words say otherwise.”

Victoria lunged toward the documents, but Marcus stepped between her and the table.

Arthur lowered his head.

Natalie whispered, “Dominic said it was legal.”

Every face turned toward her.

Dominic glared.

“Be quiet.”

Natalie began to panic.

“You said Audrey agreed to give you the shares after the baby was born. You said we were all moving into the new penthouse.”

Victoria grabbed her daughter’s arm.

“Stop talking.”

The board chair removed his glasses.

“Mr. Vance, did you use company financing to arrange the purchase of a private residence?”

“No.”

The attorney displayed another record.

“A deposit of eight hundred thousand dollars was transferred from the expansion account to a property holding company created by your father.”

Arthur raised both hands.

“I didn’t create anything. Dominic brought me papers to sign.”

Within minutes, the family that had mocked Audrey began blaming one another.

Victoria accused Arthur of incompetence.

Arthur claimed Dominic had controlled every transaction.

Natalie revealed that Victoria had already chosen furniture for the penthouse.

Dominic insisted everyone had misunderstood his intentions.

Audrey listened quietly.

For years, she had believed their confidence came from strength.

Now she saw the truth.

Their confidence existed only when they thought she could not fight back.

The board voted to remove Dominic immediately.

A temporary chief executive was appointed, and Brooks Global agreed to protect employee salaries while the company underwent an independent audit.

The police were not waiting dramatically outside the door. There was no theatrical arrest.

There was something more frightening for Dominic.

A patient investigator waiting in the lobby with questions, evidence, and enough time to uncover every lie.

Dominic turned to Audrey.

“Think about Leo. Do you really want his father ruined?”

Audrey stood carefully.

“You made choices that may ruin your career. Do not make our son responsible for them.”

“I was under pressure.”

“So was I. I had just given birth, and I still knew not to abandon my family.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“You’ll regret breaking up this marriage.”

Audrey looked directly at her.

“The only thing I regret is staying long enough for my son’s first journey home to become proof that his father did not care whether he arrived safely.”

She removed her wedding ring.

Dominic watched her place it on top of the forged documents.

“You wanted control of my shares,” she said. “Instead, you lost control of the company.”
