Chapter 3 - My Father’s Discovery

Dad discovered the truth before I could warn him.
Jason had begun using the company’s legitimate shipments to conceal restricted storage devices inside equipment containers. Some drives contained stolen maintenance records obtained through a civilian contractor working near the naval station.
Jason was not a trained spy.
He was something more ordinary and, in some ways, more dangerous.
He was greedy.
He had gambling debts, private loans, and an expensive lifestyle he could not support. A foreign procurement intermediary offered him money to move sealed packages through his company’s delivery network.
Jason claimed he never opened them.
He claimed he did not know what they contained.
But the investigation uncovered messages proving he had asked for higher payments because the information was “military grade.”
Dad found one of the drives after noticing a shipment listed under a vessel that had been decommissioned years earlier.
He called me from a gas station late at night.
“Sarah,” he whispered, “I think your brother is in serious trouble.”
I was stationed less than an hour away, working under restricted orders.
“Where is Jason?”
“At the house with your mother.”
“Do not confront him.”
“I already did.”
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?”
“He said I was confused. Then he tried to take the drive from me.”
“Do you still have it?”
“Yes.”
I gave Dad an address connected to the operation and told him to drive there without stopping.
Before he arrived, someone struck his vehicle at an intersection and forced it off the road.
The crash was initially treated as an accident.
Dad survived with minor injuries.
The flash drive did not.
He had hidden it inside a metal case beneath the passenger seat, where the impact damaged the casing but not the internal memory.
That drive became central evidence in the operation.
For the next six weeks, Dad cooperated with federal investigators.
He was devastated.
He blamed himself for giving Jason control of the company. He blamed my mother for defending Jason without asking questions. Most of all, he blamed himself for doubting me.
During one recorded interview, he looked directly toward the camera.
“My daughter warned me,” he said. “I chose the truth that hurt less.”
The investigation required Dad’s cooperation to remain secret. Authorities believed Jason’s contacts might lead them to a larger network.
Dad agreed to continue acting as though nothing had changed.
He rewrote his will during that period.
The family property, including the house and remaining company assets, would pass to me.
Jason would receive a monthly payment from a controlled trust, but he would have no authority over the principal.
Dad also included a private letter explaining his decision.
Sarah protected this family even when we did not deserve it. Jason must learn to live without being rescued from every consequence.
My mother did not know about the new will.
Jason did not know Dad had discovered the shipments.
I knew both.
And because the operation was still active, I could not tell them.
The mission ended at a warehouse near Chesapeake Bay.
Jason was supposed to deliver another concealed drive.
Before he arrived, his contact realized the location was under surveillance.
The confrontation that followed lasted less than four minutes.
It left two agents injured.
May you like
It left a permanent scar beneath my collar.
And it placed the final phase of the operation behind a classified seal.
