Chapter 15 - THE MAN AT EMMA’S DOOR

Charles remained unconscious for three days.
Doctors stabilized him, but neurological damage was possible. The officer stationed outside his room had seen no unauthorized visitors. Investigators suspected the toxin had been placed inside a sealed medication vial before it reached the hospital.
White Rose had access everywhere.
Vanessa was transferred to a federal detention facility under extreme security. Diane entered protective custody after agreeing to testify. Lily and Emma were reunited in a therapeutic residence where Rachel could stay with them.
At first, the children barely spoke.
Then Lily approached Emma one evening carrying a plate of scrambled eggs.
She set it on the table and began to cry.
“I’m sorry.”
Emma looked at the food.
“For the pool?”
Lily nodded.
“Mommy said she would make you disappear.”
“I know.”
“I should have told.”
“You told later.”
Lily wiped her face.
“Do you hate me?”
Emma moved closer and hugged her.
“No.”
Rachel watched from the doorway, holding back tears.
Vanessa had tried to turn the girls against each other.
She had failed.
The children were injured, frightened, and far from fully healed, but they were no longer alone.
That was the victory Rachel could hold.
A court granted her temporary guardianship of both girls. The Ashford estate and family accounts were frozen. Victims connected to the White Rose network began coming forward after the ledger became public evidence.
Victor Hale remained missing.
Eleanor Vale remained missing.
Caroline and Daniel remained mysteries.
Rachel spent her days attending hearings, therapy appointments, and interviews. At night, she studied the photograph Charles had given her.
The Director has Rachel’s eyes.
She searched family records for Thomas.
No close relative had that name.
Then she remembered something from childhood.
Her father had once kept an old silver frame in a locked drawer. Inside was a photograph of Rachel as a newborn, held by a young man Rachel did not recognize.
When she asked about him, Diane had taken the photograph away.
“He was a family friend,” her mother said.
Rachel returned to the seized Ashford estate with Detective Reed. In Diane’s dressing room, they found the silver frame hidden inside a box of old letters.
The photograph was still there.
On the back, someone had written:
Thomas and his daughter, Rachel. June 14.
Rachel sat down heavily.
“Charles wasn’t my biological father.”
Reed examined the picture.
The young man holding baby Rachel had dark hair and a narrow face.
His eyes were identical to hers.
A black ring was visible on his hand.
“The Director has Rachel’s eyes,” Reed said.
“My father is the Director.”
“Maybe.”
“Charles wrote Thomas before he was poisoned.”
“Thomas may also be someone else.”
Rachel searched the letters.
Most were from Diane to Charles before their marriage. One unopened envelope had been addressed to Thomas Bell.
Bell.
The same surname as Joanna.
Inside was a letter written by Diane.
Thomas,
Charles knows Rachel is yours. He has agreed to raise her, but Victor says you must stay away until the network is secure.
I will do what you asked. Caroline will inherit the company publicly, but Rachel will remain the contingency.
Do not contact me at the house again.
Diane
Rachel felt ill.
“What does contingency mean?”
Reed did not answer.
A sound came from the hallway.
A child’s footsteps.
“Emma?” Rachel called.
No response.
They moved into the corridor.
Emma stood outside Charles’s office holding her stuffed rabbit.
“I found Mommy’s voice,” she said.
Rachel rushed toward her.
“What do you mean?”
Emma pointed toward the rabbit.
“It talks when I press the eye.”
The repaired seam had concealed more than the metal key. A tiny audio device remained embedded inside the toy’s head.
Rachel pressed the button.
Static filled the hallway.
Then Caroline’s voice emerged.
“Emma, if Aunt Rachel finds this, tell her the story about the man at the window.”
Rachel knelt.
“What man?”
Emma looked frightened.
“The man who came every night.”
“Where?”
“Grandpa’s house.”
“What did he look like?”
“He had your eyes.”
Rachel’s skin turned cold.
“Did he tell you his name?”
Emma nodded.
“Thomas.”
The front doorbell rang.
Reed raised his weapon.
Nobody should have known they were at the estate.
The bell rang again.
Rachel checked the security screen.
A man stood on the front steps.
He appeared to be in his late sixties, with dark silver hair and a calm expression.
His eyes were exactly like Rachel’s.
He wore a black ring.
In one hand, he held Caroline’s green scarf.
In the other, he held a recent photograph of Caroline standing alive beside Daniel.
Rachel activated the intercom.
“Who are you?”
The man smiled at the camera.
“My name is Thomas Bell.”
Emma gripped Rachel’s hand.
Thomas looked directly into the lens.
“And before you open this door, Rachel, you should know that Caroline is not being held prisoner.”
He raised the photograph.
“She is the one holding Daniel.”
Behind Rachel, the hidden phone recovered from the kitchen began ringing inside an evidence bag.
The caller’s name appeared on its cracked screen.
CAROLINE.
Rachel stared at the front door.
Then at the ringing phone.
Thomas’s smile slowly disappeared.
“Do not answer that call,” he said.
The ringing continued.
Emma whispered, “Mommy said the first person who tells you not to answer is the person you should fear.”
Rachel reached for the phone.
May you like
Thomas stepped closer to the door.
And somewhere beneath the Ashford estate, a lock clicked open.
