Chapter 11 - The Ballroom Trap

The gala began at seven.
Emily arrived at eight thirteen.
Julian's reaction was everything she had expected.
Shock.
Denial.
Humiliation.
When he shouted that she was infertile, Emily felt the final piece of her old marriage die.
Not painfully.
Quietly.
Garrison's presence destabilized him further.
Then the doctors entered.
The badges followed.
Julian realized the truth too late.
Garrison's years as a county sheriff had been real.
But incomplete.
He had also served as a federal special investigator attached to medical fraud and organized financial crime cases.
His public disappearance from corporate life had given him perfect cover.
The ballroom confrontation was not simply dramatic.
It was operational.
Federal agents occupied every exit.
Investigators recorded every conversation.
Conrad's suspected associates were scattered throughout the room.
Then Emily's labor began.
For one moment, the entire plan threatened to collapse.
Dr. Keene rushed her downstairs.
Garrison stayed beside her until the operating suite doors.
Emily gripped his hand.
"Go."
"No."
"Garrison."
"I'm not leaving you."
"Rebecca might be upstairs."
His face changed.
"You don't know that."
"Go find your daughter."
"What about you?"
Emily smiled through another contraction.
"I have six of the best doctors in the country."
He still hesitated.
"Go."
Garrison kissed her forehead.
Then he left.
Upstairs, federal agents had detained Julian.
Chloe stood alone near the ballroom windows.
Ross approached Garrison.
"We found Conrad's men."
"Conrad?"
"Not yet."
"Rebecca?"
Ross glanced toward the upper balcony.
A woman stood in the shadows.
Dark hair.
Black dress.
Forty years old.
Garrison stopped breathing.
The woman stepped into the light.
Rebecca.
Older.
Thinner.
A scar ran along her neck.
But unmistakably Rebecca.
Garrison whispered her name.
She did not smile.
"Don't come closer."
He obeyed.
Ross quietly moved agents away.
Garrison's hands shook.
"I thought you were dead."
Rebecca's eyes filled with tears.
"I thought you killed me."
He closed his eyes.
"No."
"I saw your signatures."
"Forged."
"Conrad said the project belonged to you."
"It belonged to my father. Conrad continued it."
Rebecca looked at him.
"You expect me to believe that after eight years?"
"No."
Garrison reached inside his jacket.
He removed a small object.
A child's red hair ribbon.
"I expect nothing from you."
Rebecca stared.
"You kept that?"
"You wore it on the first day of kindergarten."
Her face crumpled.
For one second she became six years old again.
Then she hardened.
"Where is Emily?"
"In labor."
Rebecca's eyes widened.
"And the twins?"
"Alive."
Rebecca looked toward Ross.
"Conrad is here."
Garrison's entire posture changed.
"Where?"
"He came for them."
"Where is your daughter?"
Rebecca's voice trembled.
"Safe."
"With whom?"
Before she could answer, the ballroom lights went out.
A gunshot cracked through the darkness.
People screamed.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Garrison pulled Rebecca behind a marble column.
Agents shouted commands.
Then Ross's radio exploded with a voice.
"Medical level breach! Repeat, medical level breach!"
Garrison ran.
Downstairs, Emily's operating suite door stood open.
A nurse lay unconscious.
May you like
Dr. Voss was bleeding from the forehead.
And Emily was gone.
