Chapter 12 - Adrian Comes for the Codicil)

Grant called Megan immediately.
"Lock the doors."
"They are."
"Where's Noah?"
"With me."
"Do not go downstairs."
"Grant, Adrian is standing outside the gate."
"Police are coming."
"He isn't trying to enter."
Grant frowned.
"What is he doing?"
Megan looked through the upstairs window.
"Waiting."
That frightened Grant more than if Adrian had been attacking the door.
"Don't engage him."
"I won't."
Grant called Samuel.
Samuel was already responding.
Then Adrian called Grant directly.
"You found Edward."
Grant looked at the old man across the room.
"Yes."
"He always did like confessing when other people had to live with the consequences."
"Stay away from my son."
"I'm not here for Noah."
"Then why are you outside my house?"
"Because you have something I need."
"I don't have the ledger yet."
"I don't care about the ledger anymore."
Grant looked at Edward.
"What do you want?"
"Elena's codicil."
Grant's eyes narrowed.
"Why?"
"Because without it, restitution can't be activated."
"You planned to steal through it."
"I planned to correct what your family stole."
"By forging my signature?"
"Your signature was a convenience."
"By kidnapping a child?"
Adrian went silent.
Grant continued.
"Edward wants you to stop."
"My father lost the right to tell me what to do when he disappeared."
"He was afraid."
"So was I."
Grant heard something deeper in Adrian's voice.
Not only greed.
Abandonment.
But pain did not excuse what he had done.
"Leave the house."
"Bring me the codicil."
"No."
"Then Monday morning, Vance Group loses its credit facilities."
"We know the financial records were manipulated."
"Prove it before the board votes."
The call ended.
Grant and Julian returned on the next flight.
By the time Grant reached the mansion, Adrian was gone.
Police found no weapon.
No attempt at entry.
Only an envelope placed outside the gate.
Inside was a copy of Thomas Vance's original partnership certificate.
Robert Cross owned fifty percent.
The document was real.
Julian held it with shaking hands.
"My father."
Grant nodded.
Under the certificate was a note.
MONDAY. TELL THE BOARD EVERYTHING OR I WILL.
Samuel read it.
"He wants you publicly destroyed."
"Maybe I should be."
Julian looked at Grant.
"You didn't do this."
"My company benefited."
"So did thousands of employees who had no idea."
Grant knew the problem was no longer legal alone.
If he concealed the truth to protect Vance Group, he would become his father.
If he disclosed everything carelessly, innocent employees might lose pensions and jobs.
He needed a third path.
First, they went to Union National Bank.
Box 417 contained the blue ledger.
Margaret had placed it there using an emergency authorization.
The ledger was worse than Grant expected.
Thomas documented everything.
Robert's ownership.
The fatal fight.
Payments to alter records.
Money offered to Edward.
Payments to Victor.
Later attempts to buy silence.
At the back of the ledger was an envelope in Elena's handwriting.
Grant's hands trembled.
He opened it.
Grant,
If you are reading this, then the truth survived longer than I did.
I wanted to tell you myself, but I needed certainty before I changed your life.
Your father's mistakes are not yours unless you choose to protect them.
Noah's trust contains enough flexibility to repair what can be repaired without handing our son's future to men driven by revenge.
Do not save the Vance name.
Save the people who trusted it.
And please remember that Noah needs his father more than he will ever need an empire.
Love,
Elena
Grant read the final sentence twice.
Noah needs his father more than he will ever need an empire.
He sat silently inside the bank conference room.
Megan touched his shoulder.
Julian looked away.
Grant folded the letter.
"We disclose everything."
Julian nodded.
"And the company?"
"We restructure."
"How?"
Grant looked at the partnership certificate.
"Robert Cross's estate gets what it should have received."
Julian stared at him.
"Grant."
"No."
Grant raised a hand.
"This isn't charity."
He looked at Elena's letter.
"It's correction."
"And Edward?"
"His legal share too."
"Adrian will fight."
"Let him."
Megan asked, "What about Noah's shares?"
Grant looked at her.
"They stay Noah's."
That evening, they finally found Elena's codicil.
It was exactly where Noah's clue had indicated.
Inside the cover of The Little Captain.
Elena had cut a narrow compartment into the binding and sealed the handwritten pages inside.
Grant smiled through tears.
Megan asked quietly, "What does it say?"
He read it.
The codicil gave the trustees authority to settle proven historical ownership claims.
But one paragraph changed everything.
No beneficiary interest could be transferred to any claimant who used fraud, coercion, violence, kidnapping, or unlawful pressure in pursuit of the claim.
Adrian had destroyed his own path to Noah's inheritance.
Claire had too.
Julian exhaled.
"Elena anticipated someone might try to force it."
"She knew what money does to frightened people."
Grant closed the book.
For the first time, they possessed everything needed to defeat Adrian.
Then Samuel's investigator called.
Walter Dean had agreed to cooperate.
In exchange for prosecutors hearing his statement, he had revealed Adrian's final plan.
The Monday board meeting was not Adrian's real target.
He had planted a second set of forged records inside the company's federal compliance system.
At eight Monday morning, those records would automatically be transmitted to regulators, banks, journalists, and Vance Group's largest clients.
The documents made Grant appear personally responsible for years of fraud.
If released without context, they would destroy the company before Grant could explain the truth.
Samuel asked Walter how to stop the transmission.
Walter's answer was simple.

Only Adrian had the access key.
And Adrian had just disappeared again.
