THE MAN IN THE DOORWAY / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - Five Minutes to Choose

The final charge was wired into the facility’s central power core.

If it detonated, the explosion would destroy the lower vault and cut power to every suspension chamber. Even those who survived the blast would die when life-support systems failed.

Patel examined the engineering diagram.

“There is one possible method.”

Daniel waited.

“We separate the core from the chamber grid and transfer the chambers to emergency batteries before detonation.”

“How long will the batteries last?”

“Some units, twenty minutes. Others, less than ten.”

“Enough to evacuate?”

“Not everyone.”

The timer reached 04:12.

“There must be a freight lift,” Holt said.

Eleanor searched the plans.

“One lift. Capacity of six chambers per trip.”

“There are forty-three occupied units,” Daniel said.

Patel looked at him.

“We cannot save all of them.”

Oliver stared at the rows.

“We have to.”

Daniel knew the danger of promising impossible things.

But he also knew systems often contained redundancies their creators ignored.

“Why does the map show water lines beneath the vault?”

Eleanor expanded the blueprint.

“An underground reservoir. The original sanatorium used hydroelectric backup.”

“Can it generate power?”

“The turbines were sealed decades ago.”

Oliver approached the plan.

He traced a sequence of pipes.

“The pattern leads to the nursery.”

“The room above?” Daniel asked.

He nodded.

“Arthur opened the hidden stair from there. Maybe the turbine controls are inside the same system.”

Elliot’s wristband flashed.

A message appeared.

LEGACY CONTROL AVAILABLE.

He looked at Oliver.

“Together?”

The twins placed their hands on the console.

A hidden menu opened.

HYDROELECTRIC EMERGENCY SYSTEM.

STATUS: OFFLINE.

MANUAL GATE REQUIRED.

The manual gate was located in a flooded service tunnel beneath the core.

Daniel studied the depth readings.

Someone would have to enter the tunnel, swim beneath the sealed chamber, and pull the gate by hand.

“I will do it,” he said.

“No,” Eleanor replied.

He looked at her.

“I built the shutdown protocol. I know the tunnel.”

“You also designed the organization that created this.”

“Yes.”

Her voice became quiet.

“Which is why I should be the one who repairs something.”

Daniel did not trust the sudden nobility.

But the timer reached 03:28.

There was no time to debate motives.

Eleanor removed her coat and shoes.

She handed Daniel the willow pendant.

“The tracker is destroyed.”

“I do not want it.”

“It contains a mechanical key for the turbine hatch.”

Daniel took it.

She looked at Edward.

Her younger son watched her with grief and anger.

“I failed you,” she said.

Edward turned his face away.

She looked at Daniel.

“And you.”

“You can apologize after you survive.”

A faint smile touched her lips.

“You always collected broken things.”

She entered the service tunnel.

Daniel watched her descend through the water until her light disappeared.

The timer reached 02:54.

Marcus and Kessler arrived with the final medical team. They began transferring the most vulnerable chambers to portable power.

Vanessa helped despite the blood drying on her dress.

She worked silently beside Elliot.

At one point, she reached toward his hair.

He moved away.

Her hand fell.

Daniel saw that no courtroom punishment would be as immediate as the boy’s refusal to accept her affection.

The timer reached 02:10.

No sign of Eleanor.

Daniel contacted her through the tunnel radio.

“Status?”

Only static answered.

Patel monitored the reservoir sensors.

“Water pressure rising.”

“She opened the first gate.”

The emergency turbine display remained offline.

One minute forty seconds.

Daniel prepared to enter after her.

Then the radio crackled.

Eleanor’s voice came faintly.

“The hatch is blocked.”

“Come back.”

“If I return, everyone dies.”

“Tell me how to reach you.”

“No time.”

A metallic impact sounded through the radio.

She was striking something.

Daniel heard her breathing.

“One minute,” Holt said.

Eleanor spoke again.

“Daniel, Alexander knows more than he has told you.”

“What?”

“He was with Margaret before the upload.”

“You said you did not know where he was.”

“I lied.”

The admission struck like cold water.

“Why?”

“Because Alexander is not trying to destroy the Cradle.”

“What does he want?”

“To inherit it.”

The timer reached forty-five seconds.

The turbine system activated.

Green lights spread across the vault.

Power rerouted from the core.

Patel shouted, “The chambers are stable.”

Daniel gripped the radio.

“Eleanor, get out.”

No answer.

The timer reached twenty seconds.

Marcus pulled Daniel away from the service hatch.

“You cannot reach her.”

Ten.

Nine.

The core chamber sealed automatically.

Eight.

Seven.

Oliver covered Lucy’s ears.

Six.

Five.

Elliot stood beside him.

Four.

Three.

Two.

One.

The explosion shook the vault.

Lights died.

Then the hydroelectric system surged to life.

Every suspension chamber glowed blue.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

The service hatch remained closed.

Daniel rushed to it.

The tunnel was filled with debris and black water.

Eleanor was gone.

Edward closed his eyes.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then Catherine’s chamber alarm sounded.

Patel ran to it.

“Her neurological activity is increasing.”

“Is she waking?”

“I did not initiate anything.”

Catherine’s eyes moved beneath her lids.

Oliver approached the glass.

“Mom?”

Her hand lifted slowly.

It struck the inside of the chamber.

Once.

Twice.

The seal released.

Patel opened the cover.

Catherine gasped.

Oliver froze.

She looked around, confused and terrified.

Then she saw him.

“My baby.”

He fell into her arms.

Catherine held him, sobbing.

She touched the bruise on his cheek.

“What happened to you?”

Oliver could not answer.

Elliot stood behind him.

Catherine saw the second boy.

Her breath stopped.

She reached toward him.

“Elliot?”

He stared at her.

“You know me.”

“I held you both.”

Vanessa turned away.

Catherine tried to sit up.

“Where is Helen?”

Lucy approached.

“She’s my mother.”

Catherine looked at her with immediate recognition.

“Lucy.”

“You know me too?”

“Your mother made me promise I would find you.”

Catherine’s eyes moved around the vault.

“Where is the silver card?”

Daniel explained the upload.

Her expression changed.

“You sent the archive to Alexander?”

“It was programmed to reach him.”

“Then he has Helen’s route.”

“We know. Sebastian is taking her to the island.”

Catherine seized Daniel’s wrist.

“No. Sebastian is not taking her there.”

“We saw them aboard the aircraft.”

“That aircraft is a decoy.”

“Where is Helen?”

Catherine looked toward the largest point on Oliver’s corrected map.

“The island is not in the North Atlantic.”

Oliver stared at the map.

“But the pattern showed it.”

“It showed where the island was when Helen created the code.”

Daniel frowned.

“Islands do not move.”

“This one does.”

May you like

Catherine looked toward the dark tunnel where Eleanor had disappeared.

“It is a ship.”
