Chapter 5 - The Accusation

Victoria discovered the missing ring shortly after dessert.
She had removed it before dinner because the setting had caught on the lace of her glove. She remembered placing it inside the jewelry box.
When she returned to her bedroom and found the box empty, she called Daniel.
“Seal the gates.”
Daniel hesitated.
“Mrs. Ashford, we should first review who entered the room.”
“I know who entered.”
Victoria looked toward Elena, who had just arrived after being summoned.
Elena understood immediately.
“You believe I took it.”
“You were alone in this room.”
“I was cleaning.”
“And the ring was here before you entered.”
“Are you certain?”
Victoria’s face hardened.
“Are you questioning my memory?”
“I am asking whether anyone else came inside.”
Daniel opened his tablet.
“The hallway camera will show us.”
Victoria stopped him.
“We do not have time to review hours of footage while guests are preparing to leave.”
“It will take several minutes.”
“The thief could leave in several minutes.”
Elena stared at her.
“You have already decided.”
Victoria said nothing.
That silence was the true accusation.
Elena handed Daniel her cleaning bag.
“You may search it here.”
Victoria took the bag instead.
“No. Everyone should see how this is handled.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“That is unnecessary.”
“It is my house.”
“And she is an employee, not a prisoner.”
Victoria ignored him.
She took Elena by the arm and guided her toward the ballroom.
The public accusation unfolded exactly as Elena would remember it for years afterward.
The empty box.
The scattered supplies.
The whispers.
The shame.
When Sophie was exposed on the security screen, the room’s cruelty changed direction. Guests who had judged Elena now looked at Sophie as if she were another form of entertainment.
Elena hated them for that too.
Sophie confessed through tears.
She had taken the ring after seeing it on the dressing table. At first, she planned to hide it until after the dinner, hoping her mother would panic and finally lose control in front of the people she wanted to impress.
When Victoria blamed Elena, Sophie became afraid.
She wanted to speak, but every second of silence made speaking harder.
“I did not think she would humiliate Elena,” Sophie said.
Elena looked at her.
“You heard her accuse me.”
Sophie lowered her face.
“I was scared.”
“So was I.”
Victoria tried to apologize, but Elena placed down the keys and walked away.
Outside, the rain soaked through her uniform before she reached the main gate.
Daniel caught up with an umbrella.
“Elena.”
She kept walking.
“I do not want an explanation.”
“I am not offering one.”
He held the umbrella over her.
“I am offering a ride.”
Elena stopped.
For the first time since the accusation, her control disappeared.
Tears ran down her face, mixing with the rain.
“I gave them three years.”
“I know.”
“She looked at me as if she had been waiting for proof that I was exactly what she suspected.”
Daniel’s expression tightened.
“I should have stopped her sooner.”
“You tried.”
“Not soon enough.”
A black car passed them and slowed near the gate. Several guests stared through the windows before the vehicle continued.
Elena straightened.
“I will not let them remember me crying.”
Daniel opened the passenger door of his car.
“Then let them remember you walking away.”
Elena looked back at the illuminated mansion.
May you like
Through the tall windows, she could see shadows moving inside the ballroom.
Then she got into the car and left Ashford House behind.
