Chapter 6: The Secret Agreement

Julian’s voice was quiet.
“Mother. What is she talking about?”
Lady Margaret straightened her shoulders.
“Vanessa is desperate. She will say anything.”
Vanessa laughed.
“Desperate? You’re the one who begged my father for money.”
The words struck the room like thunder.
Guests had gathered outside the study door. The engagement party had turned into a public trial.
Julian looked stunned.
“The Whitmore company has money.”
Vanessa tilted her head.
“Had money.”
Lady Margaret’s face flushed with anger.
“That is enough.”
“No,” Julian said. “Let her speak.”
Vanessa looked pleased.
“Your hotel empire is bleeding. Bad investments. Hidden debts. Lawsuits your mother kept away from the press. My father agreed to save the company after our wedding. In return, I became Mrs. Whitmore.”
Julian stepped back.
“You arranged my marriage to cover debts?”
Lady Margaret’s eyes hardened.
“I protected this family.”
“You lied to me.”
“I did what your father would have done.”
Mr. Collins spoke for the first time.
“No, madam. Mr. Whitmore would never have framed an innocent servant to protect appearances.”
Lady Margaret looked at him with fury.
“This is not your place.”
“It became my place when Miss Carter was dragged before guests and humiliated.”
Emma stared at the old butler, stunned by his defense.
No one had spoken for her like that in a long time.
Julian turned to Mr. Blake.
“Where is the ring?”
Mr. Blake swallowed.
“Miss Hale gave it to me. She told me to hide it until after the party. She said Emma would be blamed, the police would be called, and everyone would be too distracted to question anything else.”
“Where?” Julian demanded.
Mr. Blake looked at Vanessa.
She said nothing.
He lowered his head.
“In the old greenhouse. Under the third stone planter.”
Julian ordered the guards to retrieve it.
The wait felt endless.
Vanessa stood with her arms crossed, no longer pretending to cry.
Lady Margaret stared at the floor.
Emma felt numb.
She had almost lost everything because wealthy people wanted to protect their secrets. If the ring had been found in her room, she would have been arrested. Her brother would have been alone. Her name would have been ruined.
And Vanessa had called her convenient.
Minutes later, the guards returned.
One of them held a velvet pouch.
Inside was the diamond ring.
The room exhaled.
Julian took it, but he did not give it to Vanessa.
Instead, he placed it on his father’s desk.
Then he faced Emma.
In front of his family, the guests, and the staff, Julian bowed his head.
“Emma, I am sorry.”
The room went still.
A Whitmore had apologized to a maid.
Lady Margaret looked horrified.
Julian continued.
“I should have defended you from the beginning. I should not have allowed anyone to search your bag or speak to you that way. What happened tonight was wrong.”
Emma’s throat tightened.
She did not know what to say.
Vanessa scoffed.
“How touching.”
Julian turned to her.
“The engagement is over.”
For the first time, Vanessa looked truly shocked.
“You cannot do that.”
“I just did.”
“My father will destroy your company.”
Julian looked at his mother.
“Then let it fall before we buy survival with lies.”
Lady Margaret’s face collapsed.
Vanessa’s lips parted, but no words came.
Emma felt something inside her loosen.
May you like
The truth had not only cleared her name.
It had broken the room open.
