Chapter 12 - Behind the Mudroom Wall)

The police found seven cameras.
Mark claimed he knew nothing about them.
Claudia said otherwise.
Two were in hallways.
One faced the kitchen.
One covered the garage.
One overlooked the back entrance.
One was positioned outside Noah's bedroom.
And one recorded the mudroom.
The devices were not hidden in the way criminal surveillance equipment might be hidden.
They were part of a home security system.
Mark had installed them openly.
Claudia knew.
The important discovery was not the cameras themselves.
It was the storage server behind the mudroom wall.
Mark had believed recordings were automatically overwritten after thirty days.
They were not.
A contractor had installed an expanded backup drive.
Nearly a year of footage remained.
Richard learned this at six thirty the following morning.
Daniel called.
"There are hundreds of hours."
Richard stood in the kitchen.
Noah was still asleep.
"Have you seen any?"
"Investigators showed me two clips because they relate directly to the guardianship case."
Richard closed his eyes.
"How bad?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Bad enough."
Richard gripped the counter.
"Tell me."
"One shows Mark closing Noah in the mudroom."
"For how long?"
"Thirty seven minutes."
Richard said nothing.
"Another shows Claudia leaving him there after Mark went to work."
"For how long?"
"Richard."
"Tell me."
"Almost two hours."
Richard's free hand closed into a fist.
Daniel continued.
"There's no physical assault in that clip. But Noah cries, then eventually stops and sits against the door."
Richard's breathing changed.
He pictured the boy behind him.
"Does he have to see this?"
"No."
"Good."
"There's more."
Richard almost did not want to ask.
"What?"
"The footage also helps Claudia."
Richard opened his eyes.
"How?"
"Several clips show Mark intimidating her."
Richard's expression changed.
"Physically?"
"One shows him blocking a doorway. Another shows him grabbing her wrist."
Richard felt anger shift into something more complicated.
"Was she afraid of him?"
"Possibly."
"That doesn't excuse Noah."
"No."
Daniel's voice stayed measured.
"But context may matter."
Richard looked toward the staircase.
"Where is Claudia?"
"With her attorney."
"Did she know the server was there?"
"She knew cameras recorded. She says Mark controlled the system."
Richard walked toward the window.
"Why did she go back?"
"She wanted clothing."
"That's all?"
Daniel paused.
"No."
"What?"
"She says she wanted to find Noah's baby book."
Richard frowned.
"Why?"
"She wants him to have it."
Richard did not know what to do with that.
Claudia had kicked Noah's birthday gift through snow.
She had locked him in a room.
She had helped teach him secrecy.
She had also returned to a house under investigation because she wanted to retrieve his baby book.
People were rarely simple enough to hate cleanly.
At ten, Sarah Mitchell arrived.
She met Richard in the library.
"I need to talk to you about Claudia."
Richard already knew.
"The videos."
"Partly."
Sarah sat.
"She contacted me through counsel."
"What does she want?"
"A supervised visit."
Richard's immediate answer was no.
He stopped himself.
"What does Noah want?"
Sarah looked at him with approval.
"That's why I'm here."
Richard leaned back.
"Has anyone asked him?"
"Not directly yet."
"Then ask."
"I will."
"Don't tell him what I think."
"I won't."
Richard looked toward the window.
"I don't know what I think."
Sarah folded her hands.
"That's probably healthier than pretending you do."
He almost smiled.
"Don't get comfortable complimenting me."
She smiled slightly.
Later that afternoon, Sarah sat with Noah on the floor.
Richard stayed in another room.
After forty minutes, she returned.
"He wants to see his mother."
Richard's stomach tightened.
"Did he say why?"
"He misses her."
Richard nodded.
"Then arrange it."
"You understand he may come back emotionally confused."
"I understand."
The supervised visit happened two days later.
A family services center provided a room with toys, books, and cameras.
Claudia waited inside.
Without makeup and expensive clothes, she looked different.
Smaller.
Noah entered holding Martha's hand.
He saw his mother.
Stopped.
Claudia immediately began crying.
Noah did not run to her.
That nearly destroyed her.
"Hi, baby."
Noah looked at Sarah.
Sarah nodded.
He walked closer.
Claudia knelt.
"I missed you."
Noah stared at her.
"Why did you kick my airplane?"
The question hit harder than any accusation.
Claudia covered her mouth.
"I don't know."
"You said it was cheap."
"I was wrong."
"Do you hate it?"
"No."
"Do you hate me?"
Claudia broke.
"No."
She shook her head violently.
"No, Noah. Never."
He stared.
"You put me in the dark room."
Claudia closed her eyes.
"Yes."
"Why?"
She had prepared answers.
Therapy words.
Explanations.
Fear.
Pressure.
Mark.
Family expectations.
None survived his face.
"Because I did something wrong."
Noah waited.
Claudia cried.
"It wasn't because you were bad."
He looked at her for a long time.
"Grandpa says grown ups have to fix their mistakes."
Claudia nodded.
"He's right."
"Are you fixing yours?"
"I'm trying."
Noah looked toward Sarah again.
Then he stepped closer and hugged his mother.
Claudia froze.
She did not squeeze him tightly.
She did not assume forgiveness.
She only put one careful hand on his back.
Richard watched through the one way observation window.
Beside him stood Daniel.
Richard whispered:
"Does that make me a fool?"
"What?"
"Wanting her to become better."
Daniel looked through the glass.
"No."
Richard nodded.
Then Daniel's phone vibrated.
He read a message.
His face changed.
"What?"
Daniel looked up.
"The audit."
Richard waited.
"They found where the missing Western money went."
"Where?"
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"Mark wasn't trying to save the company."
May you like
Richard stared.
"He was preparing to leave it."
