Chapter 12 - The Lie Alistair Buried

Alistair refused to answer while doctors were present.
After they left, he asked Eleanor to close the hospital-room door.
“I did not kill Evelyn,” he said.
“That is not what Nathan asked.”
Alistair looked toward the window. “I knew she was involved with Sebastian. I knew Meridian existed. I believed it was a legitimate fertility research program.”
“When did you learn otherwise?”
“The night she tried to escape.”
Eleanor waited.
“She called me from a roadside station. She said Sebastian had crossed lines he could never uncross. She said children were being assigned to families for future control. She asked me to meet her at the border.”
“Did you go?”
“No.”
The word seemed to drain the room of air.
“Why?”
“My father was dying. Blackwood Global faced a hostile takeover. Sebastian had already stolen patents and money. I believed Evelyn was helping him manipulate me.”
“So you left her alone.”
“I called the police.”
“Vale controlled the police response.”
“I did not know.”
“But you learned later.”
Alistair’s eyes filled with shame. “Yes.”
“And you buried it.”
“I found evidence that Vale captured Evelyn and Nathan. By then, Evelyn was dead. Nathan’s records had vanished. Sebastian threatened to expose Meridian in a way that would implicate Blackwood hospitals, even though our company had not authorized the program. I chose to contain the scandal.”
“You protected the company.”
“I told myself I was protecting thousands of employees.”
“You left a child inside their system.”
“Yes.”
Eleanor turned away, unable to look at him.
All night, people had told her that Julian’s cruelty came from Sebastian, that Victoria’s ambition came from fear, that Alistair’s silence came from responsibility. Every excuse wore respectable clothing.
The result was still a child abandoned.
“Nathan is right about one thing,” she said. “You failed his mother.”
Alistair nodded. “I know.”
“Will you say that publicly?”
He looked startled.
“You want me to confess?”
“I want the truth released. Meridian survived because every powerful person hid the part that embarrassed them.”
“The company may not survive it.”
“Then perhaps it should become something else.”
Alistair closed his eyes.
After a long silence, he agreed.
Blackwood Global scheduled a public hearing with regulators, victims, and independent investigators. Alistair would testify about Evelyn, Meridian, and the concealed records. Sebastian, recovering under federal guard, offered to testify in exchange for protection. Dr. Vale refused to cooperate. Victoria demanded immunity and received none.
Genevieve provided account passwords and recordings of Julian discussing the forged loans. Prosecutors charged her with assault and financial crimes but noted her cooperation. She accepted responsibility without asking Eleanor for mercy.
Gabriel requested a private meeting about Maya.
They met in the garden of the secure residence, where Maya played under supervision at a distance.
“I will not seek custody,” he said.
Eleanor studied him. “Why tell me now?”
“Because lawyers advised me that biological paternity could give me leverage in the trust case. I do not want leverage over a child.”
“She may want to know you someday.”
“I hope so.”
“But it will happen slowly, with professional guidance, and only when she is ready.”
“Yes.”
Maya ran toward them holding a yellow flower.
She stopped when she saw Gabriel.
“You look like Daddy,” she said.
Gabriel crouched, keeping distance. “People tell me that.”
“Are you his brother?”
“Yes.”
“Are you bad too?”
He took a breath. “I have made mistakes. But I will not hurt you.”
Maya considered him, then handed him the flower.
“For trying,” she said.
Eleanor looked away so neither of them would see her cry.
The hearing began two days later in a packed federal chamber. Alistair testified for four hours. He admitted concealing Evelyn’s warning and failing to pursue Nathan’s disappearance. Sebastian described Meridian’s original purpose and how it became a succession-control network. Gabriel confirmed the detention facilities. Genevieve described Julian’s shell companies.
Then Eleanor spoke.
She did not present herself as a victim without responsibility.
“I ignored warning signs because the truth threatened the life I wanted to believe I had,” she said. “My silence did not create Meridian, but silence is how systems like Meridian breathe. Blackwood Global will fund identification, counseling, and legal support for every person affected, even when the evidence harms our company.”
Outside the chamber, crowds watched on public screens.
Market value fell thirty percent before noon.
By evening, three lenders agreed to suspend enforcement of the fraudulent loans pending investigation. Two refused.
The largest refusing lender was Northstar Dominion Bank.
Its newly appointed chairman appeared on a video call with Eleanor.
He was a man in his forties with a scar through his left eyebrow.
For one second, Eleanor thought he was Gabriel.
May you like
Then he smiled.
“My name is Nathan Rook,” he said. “And tomorrow I begin taking your company apart.”
