Chapter 15 - THE SECRET SHE STILL HASN’T TOLD THEM

Nobody moved.

Eleanor looked exhausted.

Her royal-blue robe was replaced by a simple dark coat.

In her hand was a small leather case.

Nora stared at her.

“You followed me.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

“Then why are you here?”

“To finish what I started twenty years ago.”

Julian stepped forward.

“Mom, what did you do?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“I protected you.”

“From what?”

She turned toward Nora.

“From the truth.”

Nora's voice was barely audible.

“Where is Claire?”

Eleanor didn't answer.

“Where is my sister?”

“She is alive.”

“I know.”

Eleanor looked down at the leather case.

“But she isn't the person you think she is.”

Nora frowned.

“What does that mean?”

David suddenly stepped forward.

“Eleanor.”

She looked at him.

“You've kept the final document all these years.”

David's expression tightened.

“What final document?”

Eleanor opened the case.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

Nora recognized the handwriting.

Claire.

Eleanor handed it to her.

“This was meant for you.”

Nora took it.

Her fingers shook as she broke the seal.

Inside was a single page.

Nora,

If you are reading this, then you have finally discovered the truth about the trust.

But there is one thing nobody told you.

Not your mother.

Not David.

Not Julian.

Not even me.

The person who created the second trust was not your father.

Nora stopped reading.

Julian stared at her.

David stepped closer.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Nora continued.

It was someone who knew exactly what would happen twenty years later.

Someone who knew you would marry Julian.

Someone who knew Chloe would be born.

Someone who knew David would return.

Someone who knew I would disappear.

Nora's heart pounded.

The final line was written separately.

And if you want to know who that person is, look at the original birth certificate.

Nora lowered the letter.

“My birth certificate?”

Eleanor's face went pale.

David suddenly looked toward the door.

Julian whispered:

“Mom…”

“What?”

“You said Claire disappeared twenty years ago.”

“Yes.”

“But this letter says she knew Chloe would be born.”

Eleanor didn't answer.

Nora slowly turned toward her.

“How could Claire know about Chloe before I even met Julian?”

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

“She knew.”

“How?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“No.”

Nora opened the leather case again.

Beneath the letter was another document.

An original birth certificate.

She unfolded it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Mother.

Eleanor Bennett.

Father.

Nora stopped.

The name written there was not the name she had known all her life.

She looked at Eleanor.

Then at David.

Then at Julian.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Nora whispered:

“Who is this man?”

Eleanor's face crumbled.

David closed his eyes.

Julian stepped backward.

And from somewhere outside the house came the sound of a car arriving.

Nora looked toward the window.

A woman stepped out.

Long brown hair.

Pale face.

The same eyes as Nora.

Claire.

But she wasn't alone.

A little boy stood beside her.

He looked directly toward the house.

Then Claire raised her hand and pointed at Nora.

The boy whispered something.

Nora couldn't hear him.

David suddenly moved toward the door.

“Everyone stay here.”

Nora grabbed his arm.

“No.”

David looked at her.

“You don't understand.”

“I've spent my entire life not understanding.”

She released him.

“I'm done being protected.”

Claire entered the house.

Her eyes met Nora's.

For a moment, neither sister moved.

Then Claire smiled sadly.

“I’m sorry.”

Nora's voice broke.

“For what?”

Claire looked toward the birth certificate in Nora's hand.

“For letting you believe you knew who you were.”

Nora stared.

“What does that mean?”

Claire didn't answer.

She looked at Julian.

Then Eleanor.

Then David.

Finally, she looked at Chloe, who had quietly entered the hallway behind her mother.

Claire's expression changed.

“Chloe.”

The little girl stepped forward.

“Are you Aunt Claire?”

Claire nodded.

“Yes.”

Chloe looked at the strange boy standing beside her.

“Who is he?”

Claire took the boy's hand.

“My son.”

Nora's heart stopped.

Julian stared.

David looked genuinely shocked.

Eleanor whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

Claire's eyes hardened.

“No.”

She looked directly at Nora.

“What's impossible is that everyone still believes the story your father wrote.”

Nora tightened her grip on the birth certificate.

“What story?”

Claire looked at her.

“The one where our father died.”

Silence.

Then Claire added:

“He didn't.”

The lights suddenly went out.

A car door slammed outside.

Someone screamed.

And when the emergency lights came back on, David Vance was gone.

So was the birth certificate.

Nora looked down at her empty hands.

Claire whispered:

“They found us.”

Nora stared at the dark doorway.

“Who?”

Claire didn't answer.

She only looked toward Chloe.

Then toward the boy beside her.

And finally toward Julian.

“You need to decide who you're willing to lose.”

Nora's face tightened.

“What does that mean?”

Claire stepped backward.

“Because tomorrow, they are going to ask you to choose.”

The front door opened by itself.

Cold night air rushed through the hallway.

And somewhere outside, a man's voice called Nora's name.

Not Julian.

Not David.

Not anyone she recognized.

A voice from twenty years ago.

A voice that should have been impossible.

Nora slowly turned toward Claire.

Claire's face had gone completely white.

“You heard him too,” Nora whispered.

Claire nodded.

Then she said the words that left Nora more frightened than anything before.

“That’s our father.”
