Chapter 10 - The Mother Marcus Finally Defied

Marcus requested a meeting with Helena.

Prosecutors allowed it under controlled conditions.

Every word would be recorded.

Helena's attorney objected.

Helena agreed anyway.

She believed she could still control her son.

The meeting occurred in a private room at the district attorney's office.

Vittorio watched remotely with Nora.

Marcus entered first.

Helena followed.

She wore cream instead of purple.

Her hair was perfect.

For a moment she looked exactly like the woman who had hosted charity dinners and stood beside Vittorio at galas for forty-six years.

Then she sat across from Marcus.

"You're destroying your life."

Marcus laughed softly.

"My life was destroyed a long time ago."

"By Sofia."

"No."

Helena's face tightened.

Marcus continued.

"By me."

Vittorio watched silently.

"And by you."

Helena leaned back.

"You've always been weak."

"I know."

The answer surprised her.

Marcus continued.

"That's why you liked me."

She stared at him.

"Because I needed you to tell me who I was."

"Everything I did was for this family."

"You stole from Dad."

"I protected your inheritance."

"You threatened my wife."

"She was taking your child."

"She was protecting Elsie from us."

Helena slapped the table.

"From me."

Marcus looked at her.

"Yes."

The word hung between them.

Helena became very still.

Marcus continued.

"Did you know Mason cut the brake line?"

"He was supposed to delay her."

"That's not what I asked."

"Don't interrogate me."

"Did you know?"

Helena's lips tightened.

"Your wife was hysterical."

Marcus looked away.

Vittorio saw pain on his son's face.

Then Marcus asked the question that prosecutors wanted.

"Why did you pay Mason after Sofia died?"

Helena hesitated.

"Because he was threatening us."

"Us?"

"All of us."

"Why did you keep Sofia's phone?"

"For protection."

"Against whom?"

Helena looked directly at Marcus.

"You."

Marcus went pale.

Vittorio closed his eyes briefly.

There it was.

Nora wrote something down.

Marcus whispered, "You kept it so you could blame me."

"I kept options."

"You bought life insurance on me."

For the first time, Helena lost control.

Her eyes widened.

Marcus saw it.

"You did."

"That was estate planning."

"You wrote replace if necessary next to my name."

Helena glanced toward the mirrored wall.

She now understood prosecutors had more evidence than expected.

Marcus leaned forward.

"Was I next?"

"Don't be ridiculous."

"If I had gone to Dad before Sofia died, what would you have done?"

Helena's silence lasted too long.

Marcus laughed.

Then he began crying.

Not dramatically.

Quietly.

A man finally understanding that the person whose approval had shaped his entire life had never loved him in the way he imagined.

"You would've done it."

Helena said nothing.

Marcus stood.

"Goodbye, Mom."

Her composure shattered.

"Sit down."

He walked toward the door.

"Marcus."

He stopped.

Helena's voice changed.

Soft.

Maternal.

The voice she had used since he was a child.

"You know I love you."

Marcus turned.

"No."

He wiped his face.

"You love obedience."

Then he left.

Vittorio remained staring at the screen after the room was empty.

Nora spoke quietly.

"He did well."

"He did what Sofia asked him to do."

"Eventually."

Vittorio nodded.

Eventually mattered.

But it did not erase before.

Marcus entered the observation room.

He looked at his father.

"I'll plead guilty."

Vittorio said nothing.

"I talked to my attorney."

Marcus continued.

"Conspiracy. Fraud. Evidence concealment. Whatever they can prove."

"You could fight."

"I've spent my whole life fighting consequences."

Marcus sat.

"I want Elsie to grow up knowing there was at least one day when I stopped."

Vittorio studied him.

"Do you expect forgiveness?"

"No."

"Good."

Marcus nodded.

"I don't deserve Sofia's."

"No."

"I don't deserve yours."

Vittorio considered the question.

"That's mine to decide."

Marcus looked at him.

"And Elsie?"

"That's hers."

Marcus accepted it.

Then he handed Vittorio a small object.

Sofia's wedding ring.

Vittorio stared.

"I kept it."

Marcus's voice broke.

"I told everyone it was lost because I couldn't stand people asking why I wasn't wearing mine."

Vittorio took the ring.

"You lied about even this."

"Yes."

"Why give it to me now?"

"For Elsie."

Vittorio closed his hand around it.

"She'll get it when she's old enough."

Marcus nodded.

He stood to leave.

At the door he stopped.

"Dad?"

"What?"

"I remember the morning Sofia died."

Vittorio looked up.

"She was standing in the garage."

Marcus's voice trembled.

"I almost told her not to drive."

Vittorio did not move.

"I knew Mason had been there."

Marcus swallowed.

"I knew something had been done to the car."

The room seemed to shrink.

"And you let her leave."

"Yes."

Vittorio looked at his son for a long time.

Marcus wanted punishment.

Anger.

Something.

Vittorio gave him truth.

"You will carry that longer than any prison sentence."

Marcus nodded.

"I know."

Then he left.

That evening prosecutors arrested Helena Moretti.

The charges included conspiracy, financial fraud, obstruction, witness intimidation and felony murder connected to Sofia's death.

Mason Reed was charged separately.

Dr. Bell faced fraud and obstruction charges.

Marcus entered a cooperation agreement.

But one person was still missing.

A shell-company accountant named Leonard Vale.

Financial records showed he controlled the final eleven million dollars Helena had hidden.

And according to a message recovered from Helena's phone, Leonard had received one instruction the morning of Elsie's birthday.

If anything goes wrong, take the girl.
