Chapter 11 - The Woman in the Photograph

Federal agents arrived shortly after noon.

Special Agent Mara Quinn led the team.

She was in her early forties, with short dark hair and the controlled manner of someone accustomed to rooms full of frightened people.

Emily disliked her immediately.

Not because Quinn was rude.

Because she already knew too much.

"Mrs. Moore."

"Emily."

"Emily."

Quinn sat across from her.

"We believe the events involving your son are connected to an investigation that began eighteen months ago."

Reyes looked surprised.

"You already knew about Lane Foundation?"

Quinn glanced at him.

"Some elements."

Nathan leaned forward.

"Then why hasn't anyone arrested my mother before now?"

"Because we didn't have evidence tying Helen Moore directly to criminal acts."

"You had eighteen months."

"And your company spent three years destroying evidence."

Nathan fell silent.

Quinn turned toward Emily.

"The Lane Foundation operated under different names for decades."

"What did it do?"

"Officially? Children's medical assistance."

"And unofficially?"

Quinn paused.

"We're still establishing that."

Emily had no patience left.

"My identity was changed."

"Yes."

"My mother has disappeared."

"Yes."

"My son was nearly killed."

"Yes."

"Then stop talking to me like I'm a witness who needs gentle wording."

Quinn held her gaze.

"All right."

She opened a folder.

"The Lane Foundation appears to have facilitated illegal transfers of infants from vulnerable mothers to wealthy families."

Emily stared.

"Sold babies?"

"In some cases."

Her stomach turned.

"In my case?"

"We don't know yet."

"Rebecca Lane."

"That name appears in multiple records."

Emily frowned.

"Multiple?"

Quinn slid a document across the table.

Rebecca Lane.

Female infant.

Birth date matching Emily's.

Then another.

Rebecca Lane.

Same birth date.

Different hospital.

And another.

Three infants.

Same name.

Same date.

Emily stared.

"What does this mean?"

"We believe Rebecca Lane was a placeholder identity."

"For children being transferred?"

"Possibly."

"Then I may not have been born Rebecca."

"Correct."

Emily felt suddenly weightless.

Even the stolen identity wasn't real.

Nathan covered his mouth.

Quinn continued.

"Richard Moore was an accountant for several medical charities during that period."

"So he helped them."

"Financial records suggest he processed payments."

Emily looked at her.

"And Helen?"

Quinn slid a photograph across the table.

Helen at thirty years old.

Standing beside a woman Emily had never seen.

The woman was young.

Blonde.

Holding an infant.

"Who's she?"

"We think her name was Caroline Webb."

"What happened to her?"

"Missing since 1994."

Emily's birth year.

"Was I her baby?"

"We don't know."

Quinn handed Emily another image.

A hospital security photograph.

Caroline Webb walking down a hallway.

Beside her stood Rachel Harlow.

Emily's mother.

Emily stopped breathing.

"They knew each other."

"Apparently."

"When was this?"

"Two days before you were transferred into the Harlow household."

Emily looked at Rachel's face.

Younger.

Terrified.

"What did my mother do?"

"We hope she'll tell us."

"If she's alive."

Quinn said nothing.

Emily stood.

She could not sit anymore.

Oliver was playing quietly with a plastic ambulance.

His innocent world had become the center of a thirty-year conspiracy.

"What does Oliver remember?"

Quinn asked.

Emily looked sharply at her.

"Why are you asking?"

"Because Helen's email specifically mentioned his memories."

"He's six."

"Children remember details adults underestimate."

Nathan spoke.

"He saw the archive room."

"When?"

"Last summer."

Quinn looked at him.

"You failed to disclose that."

"I only remembered after he mentioned Mr. Gray."

Quinn stiffened.

"What did he call him?"

Everyone noticed.

Emily stepped closer.

"You know that name."

Quinn closed the folder.

"Mr. Gray appears in earlier witness statements."

"Whose?"

"I can't discuss active sources."

"My son saw him."

Quinn exhaled.

"Mr. Gray is believed to be one of the architects of the original reassignment program."

"Real name?"

"Unknown."

"Age?"

"Likely late sixties or seventies."

"Is he dangerous?"

Quinn's silence answered.

Emily looked at Oliver.

"What did he want with my son?"

Quinn lowered her voice.

"We don't think Oliver was the target."

"Then who was?"

Quinn looked at Emily.

"You."

Before Emily could respond, Officer Reyes entered.

He held a printed photograph.

"We found Rachel."

Emily's heart stopped.

"Where?"

"Traffic camera forty miles north."

"Was she alone?"

"No."

"Who was with her?"

Reyes placed the image on the table.

Rachel sat in the passenger seat of a dark sedan.

Driving was a man with gray hair.

A scar across his left cheek.

Marcus Vale.

Nathan stood.

"He kidnapped her."

Quinn studied the image.

"Maybe."

Emily looked at her.

"What do you mean maybe?"

Quinn zoomed the photograph.

Rachel's hands were visible.

Not tied.

No weapon.

No struggle.

Then Quinn showed them the next frame.

May you like

Rachel turned toward Marcus.

She was smiling.
