Chapter 8 - THE MAN IN THE CLOSED CASKET

They escaped the ward through the west tower stairwell shortly before dawn.

E refused to enter the main house. He remained in an abandoned groundskeeper cottage beyond the cedar grove while Lena arranged private security. Thomas was taken to a discreet clinic where independent doctors could examine the drugs in his system. Adrian disappeared before anyone could stop him.

Ava did not know whether he had fled from guilt or toward another secret.

Ethan confronted Margaret in the breakfast room.

She sat alone, reading the financial pages as sunlight crossed the long table.

“You kept him alive,” Ethan said.

Margaret folded the newspaper. “So you found Elias.”

“You imprisoned him.”

“I protected him.”

“You taught him to kill Ava.”

“I taught him to remove a threat.”

Ethan grabbed the table and overturned it. Silverware and porcelain crashed across the floor.

Margaret did not flinch.

“Why?” he shouted.

“Because you were going to dissolve the family trust.”

“I was going to modernize it.”

“You were going to surrender control to outsiders, charities, regulators, and a wife who believes conscience is a governing strategy.”

“Ava owns her shares.”

“Ava was never supposed to survive long enough to use them.”

The cruelty of the sentence emptied the room.

Ethan moved toward his mother, but Ava caught his hand.

Margaret watched the gesture with contempt. “There. That weakness again.”

Ava said, “You mistake love for weakness because no one ever loved you without demanding something in return.”

For the first time, Margaret’s expression broke.

Only for a second.

Then she rose. “The report in my office will answer the question you think matters. It will not answer the question that does.”

“What question?” Ethan asked.

“Whether you deserve the name you carry.”

She left through the side door.

Ethan wanted to follow. Ava stopped him. “She wants you angry. Angry people open doors without checking what is behind them.”

“She confessed to your attempted murder.”

“And she expects you to act before we can prove it.”

Ava called Lena. They needed evidence outside Margaret’s control.

The clue came from Jonathan Blackwood’s funeral.

Lena discovered that the casket had been delivered directly from the Blackwood private clinic and sealed under a public health order. No independent mortician prepared the body. The death certificate bore Silas Kessler’s signature. The burial plot had never been opened after the service.

By afternoon, Ava obtained a court order through a judge who owed no favor to the Blackwoods. The exhumation took place at dusk under police supervision.

Margaret did not attend.

Ethan stood beside the grave as workers lifted the casket. E watched from inside a black vehicle beyond the cemetery gates. He refused to be seen in public.

The lid was unsealed in a forensic tent.

Inside lay bags of sand, an iron frame, and one silver watch.

No body.

Ethan stared until the truth became undeniable.

His father had not been buried.

Lena examined the watch. “There is an inscription.”

Ethan read it aloud. “For the son who remains.”

Ava asked, “Which son?”

No one answered.

A hidden compartment beneath the watch contained a memory card. Back at Lena’s office, they opened it on an isolated computer.

A video began.

Jonathan Blackwood appeared seated in the executive office. He was older, thinner, but unmistakably alive. A date in the corner showed the recording had been made eighteen months after his funeral.

“If you are watching this,” he said, “Margaret has lost control of the succession protocol.”

Ethan’s hands curled into fists.

Jonathan continued, “One of my sons was raised to inherit. The other was raised to replace him. Neither was told enough truth to become dangerous. That arrangement must continue until the final medical determination is complete.”

Ava whispered, “He treated them like assets.”

On screen, Jonathan leaned closer.

“The third subject is the only one who knows which infant left the hospital. He was trained to preserve the answer until both candidates are present. If Margaret activates the cellar door, Subject Three will wake.”

The video skipped.

For one frame, another person appeared behind Jonathan.

A woman in a nurse’s uniform.

Miriam.

Then Jonathan spoke the final instruction.

“Do not trust the son with the scar.”

The video ended.

Ethan slowly removed his watch.

The white scar beneath it seemed brighter than before.

Across the room, E lifted his own sleeve.

He had the same scar.

Lena received a call from the hospital.

Miriam had awakened.

Her first words were not a request for Ava.

May you like

They were a warning.

“Jonathan is coming home.”
