Chapter 4 - The Ashford Gala

The ballroom glittered with wealth.

Evelyn wore silver. Derek wore the same tuxedo from our wedding. Together, they greeted guests as though their family name had never been connected to fraud.

I arrived alone.

Miriam entered separately. Adrian was already inside, seated among several financial investigators dressed as donors.

The plan was simple.

I would allow Derek and Evelyn to present the documents publicly. Once they clearly described their intention, the investigators would act.

But Evelyn changed the plan.

Just before the signing, she led me into a private room behind the stage.

Two security guards blocked the door.

Derek stood beside a table.

Patricia waited with the documents and a notary stamp.

“You said we would do this in the ballroom,” I said.

“We will announce it in the ballroom,” Evelyn replied. “You’ll sign here.”

“I need my attorney.”

“You don’t need anyone.”

Derek placed the belt on the table.

The threat was unmistakable.

“Sign,” he said.

I touched the necklace around my throat.

Inside the pendant was a microphone transmitting every word to Adrian.

“I want to hear you say it,” I replied.

“Say what?”

“Why you married me.”

Evelyn rolled her eyes.

“Enough games.”

Derek moved closer.

“I married you because your father left you property you don’t deserve. My family knows how to use it properly.”

“And after I sign?”

He smiled.

“You’ll become cooperative.”

Evelyn added, “Or irrelevant.”

The door opened.

Miriam entered with Adrian and four officers.

The guards immediately stepped aside. They had been informed of the warrants minutes earlier.

Derek grabbed the documents.

Adrian took them from him.

Evelyn demanded to speak with the police commissioner, the mayor, and three judges whose names she believed could protect her.

No one answered her calls.

We returned to the ballroom because Adrian wanted the guests evacuated calmly. Instead, Evelyn seized a microphone and accused me of attempting to steal from her foundation.

That was her final mistake.

I asked the technicians to activate the screens.

The evidence appeared.

Her own donors watched recordings of her discussing my inheritance. Bank records revealed where their contributions had gone. Photographs showed forged signatures and shell companies.

The ballroom turned against her in seconds.

Derek blamed his mother.

Evelyn blamed Patricia.

Patricia began crying and offered to testify.

Then Derek grabbed his belt.

He thought fear could restore the power he had lost.

It could not.

When he charged, I stepped away and let the officers handle him.

He never reached me.

As they placed him in handcuffs, I noticed our wedding photographer standing near the stage.

His camera flashed.

The image appeared in newspapers the following morning.

Derek in handcuffs.

Evelyn surrounded by investigators.

Me standing between them, still holding the red gloves.
