Chapter 11 - The Last Thing Rick Could Steal)

Rick did not make it far.

He reached the garage.

Then stopped.

His truck keys were gone.

Laura held them.

"I took them this morning."

Rick turned.

For a second Emily thought he might attack her mother.

Instead he looked around wildly.

He had spent years controlling exits.

Bank accounts.

Phones.

Cars.

Doors.

Now every exit belonged to someone else.

Richard stepped outside.

"Don't make this worse."

Rick laughed.

"Worse?"

He looked at Laura.

"You think your father is going to give you your life back?"

"No."

Laura's voice was calm.

"I am."

Rick stared at her.

Then his attention shifted to Noah.

It happened quickly.

He stepped toward the boy.

Emily moved first.

She pulled Noah behind her.

"Don't."

Rick stopped.

His face softened.

It was the expression he used in public.

The reasonable Rick.

The wounded husband.

The concerned stepfather.

"Emily, you've been lied to."

"By you."

"Your mother isn't stable."

Laura did not flinch.

Rick continued.

"She had breakdowns after your father died. Richard wanted custody."

"Stop."

"He thought she couldn't raise you."

"Stop."

"I'm the one who kept this family together."

Emily stared at him.

"No."

Rick smiled.

"You were nine. What do you know?"

Emily took Noah's hand.

"I know I learned to listen for your truck before I relaxed in my own house."

Rick's smile faded.

"I know Noah apologizes when he drops a spoon."

Silence.

"I know Mom checks your face before she answers questions."

Laura began crying.

Emily continued.

"And I know you made us think fear was normal."

Rick looked away.

That was the moment Emily knew he had lost.

Not because documents existed.

Not because Richard had returned.

Not because Rebecca had confessed.

He had lost because nobody in the house needed him to explain reality anymore.

Rebecca came outside carrying the flip phone.

"There is one more recording."

Rick's head snapped toward her.

Rebecca pressed play.

A man's voice spoke first.

Calvin Moore.

"I did what you asked. The line won't fail immediately."

Then Rick's younger voice.

"It needs to happen before Friday."

Calvin hesitated.

"You said you only wanted him scared."

"I said I wanted the problem solved."

The recording stopped.

Laura closed her eyes.

Emily felt Noah squeeze her hand.

Richard asked Rebecca, "How did you get that?"

"Calvin recorded Rick after he became afraid Rick would blame everything on him."

"Where is Calvin?"

"Dead."

Rick smiled.

"Convenient."

Rebecca nodded.

"Very."

Then she held up a second envelope.

"But before he died, he gave a sworn statement to an attorney in Kentucky."

Rick stopped smiling.

Richard asked, "Which attorney?"

Rebecca handed him the envelope.

Richard read the name.

His eyebrows rose.

"You planned this."

Rebecca shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Laura.

"I spent seven years running. Last month I decided to come back."

"Why now?"

Rebecca looked at Noah.

"Because Rick found me."

Emily's chest tightened.

Rebecca continued.

"He wanted to know what Noah remembered."

Rick looked away.

"He had been watching the house. He knew Noah sometimes drew the old room."

Laura looked at her son.

"How?"

Rebecca answered.

"Rick photographed his school assignments."

Emily felt sick.

Noah's drawings.

The green room.

A child's memory had terrified Rick because it pointed to the hidden evidence.

Rebecca continued.

"When I realized he was questioning Noah, I contacted Richard."

Richard nodded.

"I told her not to approach the house."

Rebecca gave a tired smile.

"I've never been good at following Dad's instructions."

For the first time, something almost normal passed between them.

A family resemblance deeper than faces.

Rick watched it.

Then he said quietly, "You still need me."

Laura looked at him.

"No."

"The mortgage."

"Frozen trust assets will cover the house," Richard said.

"My business pays the insurance."

"Not anymore."

"The accounts are in my name."

"Some are."

Richard held up the court documents.

"The accounts containing diverted Carter assets are frozen."

Rick went pale.

He turned to Laura.

"You planned all of this."

Laura shook her head.

"No."

She stepped closer.

"You planned it for us."

Rick looked confused.

"You spent eight years teaching us how to survive you."

Laura glanced at Emily.

"All we did was finally compare notes."

Rick's face hardened.

"You'll regret this."

Laura answered, "Maybe."

Then she opened the side gate.

"But you'll regret staying more."

Rick stared at her.

"You think I'm walking away?"

Richard said, "Today, yes."

Rick looked toward the street.

A black sedan waited at the curb.

No flashing lights.

No dramatic scene.

Only Richard's attorney and a court appointed family advocate.

Rick understood.

If he stayed, every minute would add witnesses.

Every threat would be documented.

He walked toward the street.

At the sidewalk he turned.

His eyes found Noah.

Then Emily.

"This isn't over."

Emily answered before anyone else could.

"It is inside this house."

Rick walked away.

The gate closed.

Noah started crying.

Laura knelt and held him.

Emily joined them.

Richard stood several feet away.

He looked uncertain.

After eight years of absence, he did not know whether he was allowed into the circle.

Emily looked at him.

Then she held out one hand.

May you like

Richard took it.

For the first time since James Carter died, the family stood together without checking the driveway.
