Chapter 12 - The Mother Who Chose Her

The sealed guardianship petition revealed that Valerie had spent the first eleven months of her life under emergency protective supervision.
Elena was listed as her biological mother. The father’s identity was withheld. Beatrice Whitmore petitioned for temporary guardianship, claiming Elena faced credible threats connected to corporate violence. The petition was withdrawn before a final hearing.
Valerie read the document in Naomi’s office while rain tapped the windows.
“Beatrice tried to raise me?”
“Temporarily,” Naomi said. “There is an affidavit from Elena stating that Beatrice was the only person she trusted to hide you.”
The affidavit changed the shape of Beatrice’s cruelty but did not excuse it.
Valerie confronted her at the mansion, now half inventoried and guarded by court officers. Beatrice sat alone in the dining room beside the knife mark in the oak table. The legal folder had been removed as evidence, but the scar remained.
“You were my guardian,” Valerie said.
Beatrice closed her eyes.
“For eleven months.”
“Why?”
“Your mother’s enemies threatened both her children. Gabriel had already been adopted and could not be moved without exposing him. You were an infant. Elena asked me to take you.”
“How did she know you?”
Beatrice looked toward Roger’s portrait. “Before I married him, Elena and I were friends.”
The admission came with a sad smile Valerie had never seen.
They had met at university. Elena was brilliant and poor; Beatrice was wealthy and controlled by her family. They planned to start a business together. Then Beatrice became pregnant by a man her parents rejected. Elena helped her hide the pregnancy. The baby was stillborn. Months later, Beatrice married Roger in a union arranged to combine two business families.
“When Elena had Gabriel,” Beatrice said, “I helped her survive the adoption. When she had you, I promised no one would take another child from her.”
“Yet you helped Roger take my embryos.”
“I helped move them because Everwell’s director was selling genetic material. Gabriel discovered it. He convinced me the mansion vault was temporary.”
“You knew about the forged consent.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Sebastian was using Marissa.”
“Not at first.”
“You knew Roger planned guardianship.”
Beatrice’s eyes filled. “I thought I could stop him before it became real.”
“It became real when you treated me like I was nothing. You trained them to believe I would accept anything.”
Beatrice flinched.
Valerie continued. “Why did you hate me?”
“I did not hate you.”
“You humiliated me for years.”
“Because Roger watched every kindness. He suspected I knew more about Elena’s assets than I admitted. The crueler I was, the safer he believed you were from me.”
Valerie laughed once, without humor. “You expect cruelty to become love because it had a strategy?”
“No.” Beatrice looked at the knife scar. “I expect nothing from you. I am telling you because Elena may still be alive, and if she is, Gabriel will force her to choose revenge over you.”
“Where is she?”
“I do not know. But the foreclosure is connected.”
Beatrice explained that the special assets fund behind the mansion lien had once been created by Elena as a defensive vehicle. After Elena’s supposed death, control shifted through bearer instruments. Gabriel tried to reclaim it. Someone else took it first.
“Who?”
“Your father.”
Valerie went still.
“Elena never told me his name.”
“She never told me either. She called him the Architect. He designed ownership structures that could survive sanctions, lawsuits, even death. He helped build the Reyes trust, then tried to seize it when Elena left him.”
The office of special assets was not foreclosing because Sebastian pledged the mansion.
It was foreclosing because someone wanted access to what had been hidden beneath it.
The underground room was only the first chamber.
Beatrice led Valerie to the west-wing nursery and pointed to the painted stars on the ceiling. Seven were larger than the rest. Their positions matched the seven roots in the Everwell emblem.
“Press them in the order of Elena’s birthday,” she said.
A section of floor unlocked.

Beneath it was a narrow compartment containing a metal map of the mansion foundation. A red line ran from the nursery vault to a second chamber under the dining room.
Directly beneath the place where Roger had slapped Valerie.
