Chapter 13 - The Crown on Trial

The Restoration Vote took place in Parliament beneath military guard.

Valeria watched from streets, homes, factories, hospitals, schools, and refugee centers.

Arthur entered the chamber without a crown.

The ancient Crown of Seven Stars remained locked beneath the cathedral, where it had rested since his father’s death.

He wore a plain black uniform.

Clara sat in the Whitmore seat.

Evelyn sat behind her as a witness under arrest.

Damian occupied a guarded chair near the council table, his injured arm bandaged and his expression poisonous.

Two seats were empty.

Conrad Whitmore was dead.

Lord Calder, Damian’s father, had fled the country during the night.

Princess Helena represented House Armand.

General Renn represented his family.

The remaining council heads watched Arthur with the calculation of gamblers deciding whether the table was about to burn.

The Chief Justice called the chamber to order.

“Adrian Lucien Marcellus claims the throne by birth and historical succession. The Council of Seven may confirm, reject, or suspend the claim pending further evidence.”

Arthur stood.

“I submit no request for personal privilege.”

Murmurs moved through the chamber.

“I ask only that the crimes of Fire Night be investigated publicly, that the council’s emergency powers be ended, and that free elections be held within six months.”

The Pembroke representative leaned forward.

“You would surrender royal authority?”

“I would limit it.”

“Then why claim the throne at all?”

“Because the council recognizes no authority capable of limiting it.”

The Chief Justice turned toward Clara.

“House Whitmore.”

Clara rose.

Every camera focused on her.

“My family participated in the coup that led to the deaths of King Lucien and Queen Marianne. My mother concealed evidence. My uncle organized armed forces and later served the Ashen Circle.”

Evelyn lowered her head.

Clara continued, “I will not defend the Whitmore name. I vote to recognize Adrian’s lawful claim, provided he accepts constitutional limits, public elections, and an independent investigation into all royal and council crimes.”

Arthur met her eyes.

“I accept.”

The chamber reacted.

The Renn and Armand votes followed.

Three.

They needed five.

House Pembroke requested a recess.

House Valmont demanded immunity.

House Soren threatened to withdraw from the council.

Damian laughed.

“You are negotiating over a corpse.”

The Chief Justice struck the desk.

“Silence.”

Damian leaned back.

“Voss will never allow the vote to finish.”

Arthur looked toward him.

“Where is he?”

“Everywhere your father placed him.”

“My father believed Voss was dead.”

“Your father created Voss.”

The chamber quieted.

Damian smiled.

“You still think the Ashen Circle infiltrated the palace. The palace founded it.”

Arthur’s expression tightened.

“Explain.”

“The Circle was King Lucien’s private network. Judges, bankers, soldiers, spies. He used it to control enemies without public trials.”

Clara remembered Evelyn’s warning that the past was not simple.

Damian continued, “Voss served the king until Queen Marianne discovered Project Aurelia. She learned Lucien had created a child with her sister’s genetic material.”

Clara’s hands went cold.

“Why?” Arthur asked.

“Insurance. A second bloodline loyal only to him.”

“That child was Clara,” Damian said. “But Queen Marianne ordered the embryo destroyed.”

Evelyn stood.

“That is false.”

Damian looked at her.

“You were paid to carry it.”

“I was told the embryo belonged to two deceased donors.”

“You knew enough.”

“I learned the truth after Clara was born.”

Damian laughed.

“Convenient.”

The Chief Justice demanded order.

A clerk entered hurriedly and handed him a message.

The justice read it.

His face changed.

“What is it?” Clara asked.

He looked toward Arthur.

“The Royal Cathedral has been seized.”

Arthur stood.

“By whom?”

“Unknown forces carrying the royal insignia.”

A screen activated behind the council table.

Voss appeared standing inside the cathedral treasury.

The Crown of Seven Stars rested before him.

“My fellow citizens,” he said, “the Restoration Vote has been corrupted by traitors, criminals, and manufactured bloodlines.”

Arthur moved toward the screen.

Voss lifted the crown.

“The kingdom requires certainty.”

Behind him, guards brought a young woman into view.

She had dark hair, pale skin, and eyes almost identical to Arthur’s.

Clara stared.

The woman wore a white hospital gown.

Voss placed one hand on her shoulder.

“This is Aurelia Marcellus,” he announced. “The true daughter of King Lucien and Queen Marianne.”

The chamber erupted.

Clara looked at Evelyn.

Her mother appeared horrified.

“That is impossible.”

Voss continued.

“The woman known as Clara Whitmore is not the surviving royal embryo. She is merely the carrier’s natural daughter.”

Clara stopped breathing.

Arthur looked at her.

Every certainty shifted again.

Voss smiled from the cathedral.

“For twenty-nine years, the council hid the rightful queen.”

The young woman lifted her face toward the camera.

Her voice trembled.

“My name is Aurelia.”

May you like

Then she looked directly toward Arthur.

“And you are not my brother.”
