Chapter 11 - The Girl in the Snow

Sophie Lang’s disappearance reopened a part of Noah’s memory he had buried.
Priya spoke with him inside a child-friendly interview room. Natalie watched through one-way glass with Emily’s permission.
Noah held the brass key in one hand.
He had refused to release it since being rescued from the storage building.
Priya placed drawing paper on the table.
“Do you remember going somewhere with your father on December fourteenth?”
Noah looked toward the mirror.
He knew Natalie was behind it.
“Yes.”
“Where did you go?”
“Trees.”
“Was there snow?”
“A little.”
“Who else was there?”
“Dad. Mr. Curtis. A girl.”
“What was the girl doing?”
“Sleeping.”
“Did she speak?”
Noah shook his head.
“Was she inside a house?”
“In a hole.”
Priya kept her voice calm.
“What kind of hole?”
“A long one. With rocks on the sides.”
“A ditch?”
“Yes.”
“What did your father do?”
“He gave me a shovel.”
Behind the glass, Emily made a broken sound.
Natalie took her hand.
Priya asked, “Did he tell you to dig?”
Noah began crying.
“He said good sons help their fathers.”
“What happened after you dug?”
“Mr. Curtis put the girl under the snow.”
“Was she moving?”
Noah squeezed his eyes shut.
“She opened her eyes.”
The investigation shifted immediately.
Noah remembered a road sign with a white deer and a motel shaped like the letter L. Detectives identified a wildlife crossing near the former Lakeview Motor Lodge, where Sophie had disappeared.
Search teams combed the forest.
After six hours, a cadaver dog alerted beside a rocky drainage ditch.
Investigators found fragments of clothing, a child’s bracelet, and human remains.
The bracelet bore Sophie’s name.
Her father, Grant Lang, had worked as a night supervisor at Eden House. He told police that Sophie vanished while he slept at the motel.
He had later disappeared himself.
Financial records showed Daniel paid him forty thousand dollars three days after Sophie went missing.
Natalie suspected Grant had discovered abuse at Eden House and tried to bargain.
Daniel took Sophie to control him.
Something went wrong.
When officers searched Grant’s former storage unit, they found video recordings copied from Eden House cameras.
One recording showed Leonard Pike striking a restrained child.
Another showed Melissa entering the facility years before she claimed to know anything about Daniel’s hidden operations.
A third showed Daniel meeting with a county judge, two police officers, and a state licensing inspector.
The network was larger than anyone had imagined.
Daniel had survived for years because people protected him.
Some were paid.
Some were threatened.
Some simply chose not to see.
One person in the recording shocked Natalie most.
Chief Robert Harlan.
Her own police chief.
The footage showed Harlan accepting an envelope from Daniel outside Eden House. There was no audio, but the date matched a complaint that had been closed without investigation.
Natalie and Aaron agreed not to confront him immediately.
They copied the evidence and contacted the state attorney general’s office through an independent channel.
Before they received a response, Harlan summoned Natalie to his office.
He closed the door behind her.
“I hear you discovered new evidence.”
“Several recordings.”
“Where are they?”
“With Detective Cole.”
Harlan sat behind his desk.
“This case has become too large for you.”
“A child-abuse network is too large for the officer who found it?”
“You are emotionally involved.”
“A seven-year-old begged me not to return him to a torture room. I hope I’m emotionally involved.”
Harlan’s expression cooled.
“I’m placing you on administrative leave.”
“On what grounds?”
“Failure to follow command procedures.”
“Which procedure?”
“You entered the Vale property without waiting for the tactical commander.”
“There was an abducted child inside.”
“You endangered the child.”
“I rescued him.”
“You were lucky.”
Natalie understood.
Harlan was not merely removing her.
He was buying time.
“Does Daniel know we found Sophie?”
Harlan’s eyes shifted.
Barely.
It was enough.
Natalie stood.
“You told him.”
“Sit down.”
“You warned him about the searches. You gave him the hospital location. Did you help him take Noah from the foster home?”
Harlan rose.
“You are making serious accusations.”
“You’re going to prison.”
Harlan moved toward the desk drawer.
Natalie stepped back.
The office door opened.
Aaron entered with two state investigators.
“Robert Harlan,” one investigator said, “step away from the desk.”
Harlan froze.
Aaron held up a warrant.
“You should have checked who received copies of the videos.”
Harlan was arrested on charges of obstruction, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and facilitating abuse.
Inside his desk, investigators found a prepaid phone.
The last outgoing message had been sent twenty minutes earlier.
They found the girl.

Daniel replied with four words.
Then Noah is next.
