Chapter 9 - The Building Tells the Truth
The evacuation took seventeen minutes.
Guests gathered on the lawn while fire inspectors blocked the entrances. Reporters who had attended the gala began making calls.
Richard moved from official to official, demanding explanations.
No one listened.
Inside the ballroom, engineers examined the ceiling and discovered that Nathan’s concerns were justified. Several brackets supporting the chandelier had begun to bend. Cracks had formed around altered roof connections. Decorative panels concealed unapproved wiring, and two emergency exits could not open fully.
The ballroom had not been moments from collapse, but continued use could have produced a disaster.
By midnight, the country club was officially closed.
The investigation expanded quickly.
Luis testified. Eleanor released the financial records. The consultant who had approved the substitutions admitted that Richard had pressured him and concealed earlier engineering objections.
Paige claimed she knew nothing about the construction.
Then investigators recovered messages in which she had demanded the removal of two support columns because they interfered with photographs of the dance floor.
One message read:
Daddy, nobody cares about Catherine’s ridiculous calculations. Make the room beautiful.
Paige also denied attacking Catherine until Mara released the recording from the service corridor.
Vivian tried to defend her.
“She was emotional. Sisters argue.”
Catherine looked at her mother across the investigator’s office.
“You called me a mistake in front of three hundred people.”
Vivian began to cry.
“I was trying to protect our family.”
“No. You were protecting the version of our family that benefited you.”
Richard was charged with fraud and other offenses connected to the construction records and financial transfers. His business partners removed him from active control of the Whitmore Group.
Paige’s promised design company disappeared before it opened. The certificate school also issued a statement clarifying that Paige’s qualification did not authorize her to make architectural or structural decisions.
For weeks, Catherine’s face appeared in newspapers beside photographs of the closed ballroom.

They called her the architect who prevented a tragedy.
